Guinevere sat down in the restaurant.
She was not running away from home, but she was rebelling, and she had fifteen dollars and time to drink some tea. She winced as she sipped it, the bitter brew unpleasant on her tastebuds. But tea was Mature, right? And ladylike and proper and grown up. So she persevered. She would show Kotatsu. She would show them all that she wasn't a little girl. She would drink this Mature Drink until she LIKED it.
The definitely-not-little girl put another three lumps of sugar into her tea. How did adults put up with the stuff? Maybe more milk was the answer.

Alice cheerfully followed her father into the restaurant. Her little brother and sister were away with her elder sister for the day, so she and Daddy were out together for the day.
Being that Hatty had a fondness for tea, and Alice wanted to try it, they got some themselves in a small post at the table that they could pour into their cups as they finished. Some places offered that and this one apparently had it as an option.
The small Herald watched as her father carefully put in the milk and sugar for her, making sure it was cool and sweet enough for her to drink. The child didn't want the tea because it was 'mature' or anything of that nature, she had no sudden desire for independence. Alice just wanted to try it because it was supposed to taste good when made right and Daddy liked it.

Guinevere looked suspiciously at the 'tea'. Did people really drink this? Maybe adults were just having her on, she couldn't see why anybody would like the peculiar drink. She put another sugar cube in it, but it was beginning to get a bit sludgy. Perhaps fourteen cubes was too much after all. Afraid she had ruined it and too embarrassed to ask for another cup before she finished the first one, she looked around to avoid taking another sip. Presently she saw something to distract her. Another girl, one with white hair and wings... A Herald! Seizing the diversion, Guinevere waved over to the other child from her table, beribboned wings fluttering merrily.

Alice glanced up from their table and spotted someone else waving to her. Warmly, the little one waved back. Standing, after politely excusing herself from her father, she walked over.
"Hello there."

Guinevere nodded at the other girl. "Hello to you too!" she said in a voice jammed full of cheeriness. She did NOT want to go back to the tea. "My name is Guinevere. And you are...?" The other girl was somewhat strange looking. Well, stranger than your average winged child, anyway. Her wings were awfully unusual and Guinevere wondered what her sacrifice could be. Whatever it was, it was very... Purple. Guinevere fluttered her own ribbony wings nervously. She had begun a conversation in desperation to escape, but now the other girl was actually here, she was starting to remember how bad she was at People. She could boss Kotatsu around like nobody's business but when it came to meeting people she was atrociously unskilled.

"I'm Alice." the other child agreed with a nod, fluttering her small wings. "Your wings are really neat, Guinevere. I like the ribbons."
Luckily for the older girl, the small one was sweet and rather social, having little trouble getting along with others.

Guinevere looked proud. The little Herald loved compliments, and fluttered her wings vainly. "Thank you. Nice to meet you, Alice." This was easy! Feeling triumphant, she asked "So why are you here? Special occasion? Just for fun?" She couldn't imagine why people would drink tea for fun.
