A lot of gems and crystals are said to hold various different abilities. They've been used in this way a lot in the fantasy genre, and in Final Fantasy IX especially, you equip them on your characters so they can learn different abilities from them.

Garnet and Eiko use several of them to learn to summon different eidolons, whereas some of them hold abilities that can be learned and equipped by other characters as well.

I found this website that tells you about the properties that are believed to be in many of these different stones. The website is Crystal Cure.

Here's one example...

Crystal Cure - Amethyst
Amethyst Gemstone meaning

Crystalline quartz in shades of purple, lilac or mauve is called amethyst, a stone traditionally worn to guard against drunkeness and to instill a sober mind. The word amethyst comes from the Greek meaning "without drunkenness" and amethyst is beleived to protect one from poison.

Power Stone

It is used as a dream stone and to help insomnia. Put an amethyst under your pillow to bring about pleasant dreams, or rub it across your forehead to offer relief from a headache.

Protection Stone

Ancient Egyptians used the amethyst guard against guilty and fearful feelings. It has been worn as protection from self-deception, as well as a protection against witchcraft. The amethyst has long been used to open the spiritual and psychic centers, making it one of the power stones. It is also used as a meditation aid when worn as a necklace.

Wisdom Stone

The amethyst is known as the Bishop's Stone and is still worn by Catholic Bishops. The amethyst symbolizes piety, humility, sincerity and spiritual wisdom. It is thought the amethyst is the perfect stone to symbolize The Age of Aquarius.

Healing properties of Amethyst

Amethyst is a gemstone often worn by healers, as it has the power to focus energy. A healer will usually wear several pieces of jewelry with amethysts set in silver, especially an amethyst necklace. The person to be healed will have an Amethyst to hold while the healing is being done. The healer will place another piece of Amethyst on the area of the body in need of healing, the heart or lungs usually.

Amethyst is used for problems in the blood and in breathing problems. Amethyst crystal clusters are used to keep the air and life force in the home clean and positive.

Amethyst clusters, points or several tumbled Amethysts placed in a window that receives sun most of the day are very beneficial to use in healing and to heal negativity in the home. Place Amethyst clusters, points or several tumbled Amethysts in moonlight and everyone in the home will be feeling calmer. Using an Amethyst as a meditation focus will increase the positive spiritual feelings. Amethyst helps overcome fears and cravings. It also helps relieve headaches.

So, let's go into details. Those of us who are writers or who are just interested in jumping in for the discussion on there opinions/theories may want to dig deeper still.

I know that the crystal mala which is a rosary beads containing 108 beads is very important in the Hindu religion yet in my writing the spiritual master in my story uses a crystal and a special type called saptika to heal people which is also the same in the Hindu religion.

Heh... I know more about this topic than I should, considering I'm a person for whom the jury is still out on a lot of it. But then again, I sell stones and crystals for a living. ^_^;

I don't really believe in the idea that a crystal can have a direct physical healing effect, like getting rid of a cough or curing cancer (and yes, I've heard that one!). There is a certain amount of psychological effect that such things can have, though, so I don't discount it as an aid in healing. The placebo effect is well documented and as long as it helps, why not do it? But the stone itself doing it? Nuh uh. Don't buy it.

Mental healing and focusing aids, however, is a whole other animal. I definitely go for that one. I keep lapis, citrine, amethyst, sunstone, and aquamarine on my desk near my computer and reach for them quite a bit when I'm writing (lapis, citrine and sunstone are good for creativity, amethyst for concentration and protection from outside influences, and aquamarine is good for communication) and I focus them all with a twin-tip quartz crystal. There's a piece of green calcite under my pillow for calming me down at night so I can get better sleep. And for a while, I had a piece of moldavite under my pillow as well for dream enhancement and retention (I almost never remember my dreams and it bothers me, a bit), but it was too powerful and ended up keeping me awake at night. I need to wire wrap it and make a pendant, it's so energizing. I have a sphere of golden calcite that told me I was supposed to take it home, but I'm still not sure what its mission in my life is.

There are a couple books we keep on a shelf at work that I reference all the time when people come into the store looking for something. Book of Stones and Love is in the Earth. They're both excellent references for metaphysical aspects of minerology.

I have similar thoughts to yours Berz, and I didn't know stones were used in Hinduism till today Suma!

What you said, Berz, of the actual stones doing these things does seem highly improbable, but I tend to think of them as having their said properties. I just think that for such things to be used, the person using them draws those properties out. If you don't eat certain foods that can aid in you in a variety of different ways, then you won't reap the benefits. They won't do anything for you unless eaten, and I see the power of crystals in much the same way. You need to have the psychological mind-set and be able to focus in order to be able to draw out those hidden properties.
At least that's how I look upon it.

What do you mean though when you say you know more about them than you should. These things are of nature aren't they? Using them for witchcraft is wrong I think, if you mean on a level of our faith, but that side of things is a bit hazy.

I find everything about the supernatural aspects of this world fascinating regardless of whether or not I'm involved.

Just a general turn-of-phrase. I'm just not the sort of person that one would think would know about this stuff, given my solid science background.

As for believing in the effect to make the effect happen (we call it "drinking the kool-aid" here), that's pretty much precisely what the placebo effect is. So, yeah, I doubt it would work for me. But the placebo effect isn't strong enough to cure serious ailments that one would need to go to a doctor for. Snake-oil salesmen make a lot of money on people who believe otherwise, many times until they die.

I wouldn't expect them to cure serious ailments either, such as diabetes (what I have) and cancer.

I once had this bracelet (can't remember what gemstone or rock it was), but it was said to increase strength somehow. I have no idea on this myself, but this happened when I was about....13 or 14. I was wearing it, a few classmates were over, and my sugar level went low. Back then hypoglycaemia sent me scatty because my body was still developing and therefore the diabetes wouldn't settle. All three of them and my mother were apparently holding me down (I have next to no memory of it because when hypoglycaemia makes a diabetic act strangely it's like awakening from a dream when sugar is back in the system again), whilst my dad did a blood test. One of these classmates said that I was ridiculously strong, and so took the bracelet off my wrist. Apparently then I was easier to hold down.

I'm not sure of that story myself. Perhaps I was just strong anyway and that because I'd been thrashing I may have suddenly exhausted my remaining energy at that particular point. I'm not ruling any possibilities out, I just wasn't sure of that one because I wasn't there mentally really and didn't remember.

My parents have both worn magnetic bracelets (namely those made of copper) for arthritis and the likes. They say they tend to help rather well. They don't eradicate the problem, but lessen the effects as it were.

Er... copper isn't magnetic...

Unless you count the magnetic field that happens when you run a current through it, but given that it's being worn, I doubt there is one in this case.

As for the Hypogalceamia thing, I've actually seen something similar happen to a friend of mine. She gets crashes really badly if she isn't careful. She once got ridiculously strong all of a sudden while we were setting up camp at an SCA event. She was lifting and moving things that she should not have been able to lift or move. And then, all of a sudden, she very nearly passed out and had to be carried to food. She said she looked into it later and learned that it's a common occurrence because adrenaline steps in to compensate for the low blood sugar for a while.

Likely it was coincidence that you finally went dark when your friend took the bracelet off. Besides, according the metaphysics, just taking something off wouldn't necessarily do it. First of all, it has to be outside your aura, which extends out about three feet from you in all directions. That's why stones under pillows and sitting on desks work just as well as ones being worn or carried in a pocket. Second of all, stones usually have a fading effect, rather than a sudden cut-off, as the aura readjusts to the stone no longer being there.

I meant magnetic or metallic...whoops! Sorry for the misunderstanding there.
Copper is said to aid arthritis though, and my parents found that it did ease it a bit.

I agree when it comes to the story I mentioned. I didn't know the details though. Those people aren't friends anymore though. It was a very long time ago when I was at school. They were a few classmates who happened to live close by. I didn't think there would be anything much to it. However, I can lift blocks of concrete and huge heavy bags of bird seed (we keep chickens) normally, so I don't know how much that'd change. Nowadays when I get a low sugar level it feels like excessive weakness in my limbs and makes me feel like I need to sleep.

What about birthstones and how they're associated with us personally?
I'm not sure of mine to be honest. I've come across two birthstones for when I was born (4th August 1986). They are the Ruby and Peridot.

Peridot Gemstone meaning

A tiny island known as Zabargard (owned by Egypt) is documented as the first source of peridot, dating back as far as four thousand years. Early Crusaders who visited St. John's Island (now called Zabargard) introduced this gem to Europe upon return from battle.

Peridot is mentioned in many ancient references as chrysolite. It is mentioned throughout the Bible, and early Christians considered it sacred. Today still, Catholic Bishops traditionally wear a ring of peridot and amethyst as a symbol of purity and morality.

The peridot was believed to be a stone of springtime by ancients who considered it a gift from Mother Nature. Napoleon once made a gift of peridot to Josephine as a symbol of undying love and admiration. In ancient times, it was said that a dream about peridot foretold impending danger.

Healing qualities of peridot

Peridot is a stone of lightness and beauty. Only spiritual or clear-minded persons should use peridot. The person with too many earthly problems will not be able to understand the beauty of the Peridot. The very spiritual can wear peridot in a necklace with the stone at the base of the throat to feel its soothing effect. Used in a necklace, peridot is a protector against negative emotions.

Peridot has been known to have healing effect on the gall bladder and liver.

Sources of peridot

Peridot is a gem variety from the olivine mineral group. The bottle green color is called peridot. Yellowish green is chrysolite. Olive green is olivine. Sources of peridot include: St. John's Island (Egypt), United States (Arizona and Hawaii), Myanmar, Burma, Australia, Norway, South Africa and Brazil.

Love stone

The Ruby is filled with love. It also helps sexual love to be more passionate. Persons lacking in self-love should have and mediate on the Ruby. It also gives the courage to be best potential that a person has.

Healing properties of Ruby

Ruby works with the flow of blood as an aid to circulation. It aids the cleansing and removal of infection or germs in the blood. The Ruby may be worn in jewelry, but never close to the solar plexus, as the Ruby has a disquieting effect upon it. In a ring wear it on your left hand.

The color of rubies varies from vermilion to red. The most desired color is "pigeon's blood", which is pure red with a hint of blue. If the color is too pink, the stone is a pink sapphire. The same is true if it is too violet - it is a violet sapphire. The best rubies and star rubies are bright red. Most rubies come from Burma and Thailand.

I had no idea about stones in Hinduism either...

Hey! Berz is a stones and crystals seller, eh? Goodie! Maybe she can give us a discount, he-he. wink

I have something to add here, not to the last discussion mind you but, about some "power stones" that can be found on "Magic: The Gathering". If you feel like it, head over to this page and read all about Thran Power Stones. 3nodding

LOL! Well, we do have a website. But I can only give my discount to people in-store.

I've found myself drawn to rose quartz lately. We had a really deep pink piece of it in the rough that looks kind of like a flame that just had to come home with me from work last Sunday.

Crystal Cure
Rose quartz is known as the love stone. It helps the user feel a strong sense of self-worth, therefore being worth love. Rose quartz is the stone of universal love. It is also the stone of love in marriage. When worn in jewelry the wearer feels a sense of self-worth.

Rose Quartz has a gentle vibration of love for the owner. It gives inner peace and helps in all matters pertaining to love in all its forms. Rose Quartz opens the heart to love. It also helps as a rejuvenator to the skin. It is a lovely stone for a young person.

Maybe it's trying to tell me to deal with my self-confidence issues? ^_^;

The Egyptian Dragon

Moonlight Healer

PostPosted: Sun Jan 11, 2009 12:48 pm

I have a few of those stones myself, and two decent sized pieces of Amethyst and Moonstone next to my bed, with a large white/clear crystal point on a keychain. When I actually received the Amethyst years and years ago when I was a real avid collector of gemstones and rocks (I became less so when space was running out in the tiny place I live in) was when my nightmares disappeared and more peaceful dreams entered my mind. I have yet to have those shocking nightmares since, and that was when I was around seven or eight (I am 19 now)... This is also why I am looking for necklaces in particular that have these nice stones since I read somewhere that the neck area is the best place for the energies to affect you.

There are just things about these stones that attract me, and I can sort of feel them emitting their energies when I am close to them.

I suppose the whole thing about gemstones and crystals is real cuz of either chemistry or magnetism, or both!
I may not know much about the subject but that may be cuz I haven't had the chance to really get into it. I mean, I've never seen any of the ones Berz mentions or any other kind to be honest so, since I haven't had the opportunity to experience the stuff for myself, well...

There have been inclusions of these things in fantasy tales, right? I wonder which of them could we talk about first. I have some on at least one of my stories but I think there are more actually.

BTW, mere stones are not exactly like gemstones, are they? I mean, unless a stone has certain properties, it can never be as valuable as a gemstone, am I right?

It's precious stones and those like them that are meant to have these abilities I believe. However, there are other rocks and minerals that are said to have healing properties.

Take Rhassoul Clay for example. I met a lady at a craft fair in Norwich just before Christmas (she's local as well) who told me about the stuff. It can be used to treat various skin conditions. I bought some for Amanda, and she said it really does help. She has eczema, and said that when it starts, using that clay in the shower stops it from itching for quite some time. More information can be found here - Rhassoul Clay.

There's also Black Pummice, which is used to exfoliate areas of hard skin.

I mentioned the Alum Stone before (same seller). That's used as a deodorant and is said to be the best type of deodorant out there. You wet it and rub it over the armpit (or wherever else you might need it).

I think there's still a lot about nature that we don't know and I'm very glad that people like the lady who runs this shop are around. We buy shampoos and soaps and all manner of other things that are manufactured when nature can give it to us (not always for free because people harvest the resources and sell them on). When I get a good job I'll probably buy as many natural products as I can instead.

Funny you should say these things about those nightmares ED. I don't have any stones really (albeit an old collection of tiny ones somewhere) at the moment, but I have two large dreamcatchers. As soon as I'd put up the first several years ago now, I stopped having so many bad dreams. I still get them occasionally but nowhere near as often. I know that's not about stones, but...I'll make a thread.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 16, 2009 2:54 pm

Yes Mel it's always a good idea to go with all natural products. Good for you! I hope you can find a great job soon. 3nodding

I'm not much for doing research on these kinds of things but I'm gonna come back to this thread from time to time to look at the links.
BTW, has anyone ever made special kinds of gemstones or stones of power? Cuz I am reminded of certain stones that can be found on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Those stones were pretty special, wouldn't you say? I know they're not gemstones but, they sure glowed like gemstones when they were placed together. 3nodding

Topic revival!

I've created an additional type of crystal in my world, but I can't really say much on them. ^_^' They could be likened to that of the big Final Fantasy crystals from ages past, and perhaps they were part of the inspiration behind this idea. I think the size of them can be linked to the old FF crystals, but the look of them is not so different from the varla stones in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
