One day while procastrinating I ran into this article: http://www.geekologie.com/2008/02/fishtank_looks_like_habitrail.php

I must admit, it looks beautiful, and my first reaction was 'oooh I wanna'.
But, as many in the coments also note, it has some major flaws. Like filtration, cleaning, airsurface (especially since there are betas and gouramis in there).
So my conclusion is that this thing can't function, however it does make me wonder, is the square/rectangle really the only option we have for a tank? Are there other interesting non traditional tanks that actually do 'work'?
And could this design be altered to meet the filtration, cleaning and oxygen demands?

Also, another piece of interesting aqua-architecture: http://www.aquatic-eden.com/2007/10/creating-waterfall-illusion-underwater.html

There more then likely is a way. Perhaps if the tubes and bowls were all level and you left a bit of air at the top for nesters. Though, making tghem in a straight line takes away a bit from the appeal....

I have seen people with sand water falls. Or... sand falls? in their fish tank.

i think if you put in a different kind of fish (something like guppies) it would work better

i like to give my labyrinth fish access to more open air and that looks pretty closed in (no holes in it either i dont think)

you could add air stones and sponge filters i bet in that tank
if its custom made they can cut some holes or you can drill some yourself for airline tubing.
looks totally doable to me :3 if you do it right

depends on the lighting :3

what would look super neat
would be a sort of black light over it with those glowy fish that come in different colors

algae wouldnt grow cuz there isnt light for it to grow and the fish would glow AND if you put those glowly plastic plants in and glowy gravel it would look so cool

Meh, sounds much too spacy to me. And, I'm not too sure on this, don't fish need light to stay healthy too?
But if I would go for the set up you sugest Skittles I'd take blind cavefish and maybe some random albino species. I hope you don't mean painted fish when you mentioned glowy fish. That practice is just cruel.

I think those filters that go under the gravel may work, but that still leaves the problem of what you would do when you have a dead fish. Or worse, a sick fish, how would you catch it and quarentine it before it infects the others?

they are not painted
some fish just glow under that kind of light
and i dont think you can paint a fish to glow? i have seen painted mollies and frogs @_@ you can tell when something is painted....it looks bad

and i dont think they need light...but the blind cave fish would be a good idea

but my bf just told me that black light might not be good long term for fish cuz the uv rays...so some kind of actinic might be better (the blue colored lights that are usually on saltwater tanks.) coraline algae LOVES that kind of light but regular algae may not grow under it

what i think would be a GREAT idea for that tank would be to do it saltwater with crabs snails and shrimp
clean up crew to well clean up any algae or dead animals and the biological filtration should be plenty to keep it from getting skuzzy :3

here are the glowy fish

http://www.glofish.com/faq.asp

apparently they were bred to help detect pollutants and then they started breeding them so people can buy and own them

EDIT: o god i want some now especially since buying them means you are helping solve pollution problems (part of the sale goes to the scientists to further their studies)

Frogs? They paint frogs now too!? crying
Gah, I don't get the whole painting thing, it's such and ugly and horrible practice. I feel an urge to smack every kid I see begging their parents for painted fish. I once scolded a kid in a petshop and ranted about how those fish got their 'magical colors' and the response was; 'so? It's just a fish'
grrr

aaaanyway.

You know, that's a brilliant idea! The structure does kind of remind of those coral tunnels. There are some really pretty 'nocturnal' reef fish too if I'm not mistaken, they could meet the standards the aquarium sets pretty well. Like basslets and cardinalfish.

i dont think in that tank you could do a reef really unless you do like SUPER easy stuff like mushrooms

a blackcap basslet would be really nice in there
they dont care much for bright shallow reef environments so low lights would work for it :3 i dont know how big that tank is but anthias dont like bright lights either...they just need lots of swimming room so i dont know if that would be best for them

i think a saltwater set up for such a tank would be the best idea <3

Man, now I want to try to set up a tank like this crying

If corals aren't a good idea, how about sponges? I don't know but are they easier to care for? And need less light? And when keeping sponges, why not add Yellowline Gobies? I love those cute and shy critters.

Personally I prefer the Royal Gamma to the Blackcap. Maybe if the set up is made bigger the anthias can be kept? I'm pretty sure this is a custom made tank, so you can have your say in the measurement.
This all reminds me of a 'tank' I wanted when I was a kid. The main concept was that I would have large tanks in each room of the house, and that they'd all be connected. My childhood dream house was pretty much to live in an aquarium redface
PostPosted: Fri Jan 09, 2009 10:07 pm

sponges are hard to take care of cuz the food needs
and i say blackcap cuz they are true low light fish ^_^ grammas can live in shallow reefs
they are both pretty...too bad you can only keep one unless its a bigger tank

our plan (bf and i) is to pretty much turn our house into some type of aquarium XD he wants a 300 gallon saltwater tank, i want jellyfish in the bathroom and tanks built into the walls and around doors...i want a tide pool coffee table and an underwater dome like reading room....yeah XD im lucky to have someone as fish crazy as i cuz hes agreed to all trying as much of it as we can XD

Ah bleh, didn't know that. But it makes sense.
Hmm, I only ever encountered grammas around 50ft down at dropoffs when diving. So I never really picked them for shallow reef fish. Though amount of boats and jetski's might have driven them away from their original habitat. Then again, my perception of shallow may not be correct sweatdrop
I think you might be able to keep muliple in this set up, since the small tubes connecting the sections can act as a natural barrier. I immagine it'd be hard for one fish to dominate all the globes.

That sounds so nice ^^
Hope you guys can mannage to get a house like that. I wish you the best of luck ^^
