Why?

Why could be just do what his mother did? Why did they have to do it this way? What if something bad happened? Or something stupid? He wasn't sure he could live a cub who named herself 'Ratel' or 'Fuzzy'! He would feel so GUILTY for the rest of his days. And Apollo planned to have many days to come.

Days full of fatherly guilt of his childrens embarrassing names was not on his mental list of 'Things to Do Before I Die'. But...

The purple lion rose awkwardly in the cave, his paws tingling as they awoke., and bumped the ceiling with his head as he stretched. Not pleased with the fact that he had decided on a cave where the ceiling rose and sloped, the lion grumbled and moved out into the morning sun.

Nevermind. Afternoon sun. Most definitely not morning. Far to hot be morning, far to bright to be evening. So it must be midday. The midday when him and Oboe were to take their first born cub out on what Apollo called the 'Walk of Apparent Doom'. He didn't care what Oboe said, he was almost certain this would end badly.

Now he stretched again, and looked around. Bevin promised to stay with the other cubs, who were being weaned off of Oboe, and watch them while he, Oboe, and their first born were out. The cubs were wild, and he grinned maliciously at the thought of the serval struggling to control the other three of them.

"Oboe," he called, after a few minutes, peeking his head back into the cave. He hadn't even checked to see if she was awake yet. Oops.

"Ooooboe?" he called again, "Come on, get the little one," since they had no names yet, Apollo had come to call them his little ones, "and let's go. Before it gets to late."

Or before I snap and die from the foreshadowing guilt, Apollo finished miserably.

Oboé frowned at Apollo's persistent calls. Her ears pointed backwards involuntarily and her tail twitched. She had been having a nice conversation with her daughter. What was he calling her for?

...Ohhhh, yes. The naming walk.

...Well, whatever it was called.

"Don't mind him, love." Oboé said quietly to her daughter, waving a paw carelessly. "Ratels are known for their impatience." She then led her cub, who was the eldest, out of the cave and into the open.

Oboé smiled at Apollo and gave him a nuzzle. But it was short. She had already started to walk away. Her insides were bubbly and she was very happy. The cubs would all have names by the end of the day! And they would be naming themselves, too. Oboé sighed, feeling somehow fulfilled at the idea. She glanced over her shoulder at her daughter, her usual lazy smile plastered to her face.

"How do you feel knowing you can name yourself if you wish to?" Oboé asked.

[Eskimo]

Anxious Cat

Lithiasaur
Crew

Snuggly Knight

User ImageThe little purple half breed yawned and rolled onto her back in the shelter of the cave. She wasn't too aware of what was going on for a long moment, just happy to be resting with her family. Her dad seemed a bit out of sorts, but she was already coming to learn that this was relatively normal for the big purple lion. And she loved him for it.

In fact, she found she was more often in her father's company than the rest of her family, whether he liked it or not. A bit on the clingy side, she didn't like it when he was too far away from her. She felt lonely, and though she loved her family dearly, he was a soothing, force in her existence. He just quieted her without trying. Plus, she found him funny.

Whether he meant to be or not.

The nameless cub obediently moved to follow her mom, struggling to right herself off her back and trotting after her with a distant smile on her face. Short attention span in full throttle, she watched a bird in the sky, then followed a lizard as it darted from their path, saw the way the grasses squished under their feet, and heard a pebble hit another pebble under her paw. Distracted, she missed her mom's smile and was a little surprised when she spoke.

Mouth open, vaguely confused by the offer, she looked thoughtful, "do I have to? I don't know any names. I want to be named like daddy!"

Apollo watched as their first born stumbled out. She was a beauty, and he (secretly) enjoyed her constant tag-along nature. He trotted up to as her eyes danced around. She always seemed busy soaking up the world, as if she was worried if she didn't catch it all in her mind right then it would disappear. The young father purred loudly, nuzzling her side.

Her words made him laugh, and he gave Oboe a 'Told you this was a bad idea' face. But he knew that this was something Oboe really wanted, and found himself stuck between a rock and a hard place.

She wanted to be named like him, yes?

So...

"Oboe, little one, why don't I give you a list of names? My mother used to tell me stories, and I still remember some names from them. You can choose from that."

He gave his mate and cub and uncertain smile, and prayed this worked. He was not good at improvising, and even though he was vehemently against the cubs naming themselves, he had accepted this choice, and thusly had not taken the time to think of any names. Hopefully if the cub had some choices, she would pick one she liked. And hopefully Oboe would accept this idea.

Hopefully.
