Pride. Such a small word, but so hard to define… was it better to have pride in yourself or those around you? Thilivhali had no idea, but, at this moment, he felt proud of… well… his pride. Earlier in her life, Senatla, his dear mate, had to raise her six children by herself. Well, at least for a little while… Kamaria, her sister, would help out, but Senny was still the main provider for six little lives, working relentlessly for a better world. Those hybrids were mostly out on their own now, on their Seeking quest, and there was a new litter to look after…

This time would be different, Thili had promised Senatla. And it was. Instead of only having herself and Kamaria to look after the cubs, there was an entire pride eager to help. Siti, an old friend of Thili’s, was eager to lend a paw whenever she wasn’t busy with her own children. And there was Jethro as well, Kamaria’s mate. Kamaria and Jethro had two daughters, two cousins for the new ones to play with. One thing was for sure: the new bundles of joy would never find themselves alone. Hopefully they wouldn’t mind that. But today was a day just for the immediate family… Thili sat by the den’s entrance, looking over the golden sands, musing on the waves. His tail twitched, a sure sign of his anxiety. Today was the first day the cubs would be allowed outside of the den. And a good thing too: as young as they were, they were already boisterous and attempting to stumble out on their own.

He glanced back into the darkness of the cave, seeing several pairs of little eyes glowing in the dark. Just… waiting.

Unknown to him, there was one little girl who didn’t intend on waiting for anything.

Mahvash, the third cub of the litter, was far too busy to consider waiting for her father’s permission. Currently, she was stalker her father’s tail. It was twitching so nicely! How was she supposed to resist that? Plus, her daddy seemed nice and distracted and, in her limited experience, that was the perfect time to strike. At least, it always worked on her siblings. Her steps were unsteady and her path could only be called ‘straight’ if you had a very lax view of geometry. Or perhaps if they were drunk enough it would look straight… either way, she eventually managed to bumble her way to her father’s tail. Unfortunately, by the time she got there, she was already distracted.

There was a whole world beyond the cave. She had vaguely known that, of course, but this was the first time she had seen it so clearly. Her silver eyes went wide before she started charging off as best she could. In other words, she got three steps before stumbling over some invisible air pocket. Not that she stayed down long. Her father picked her up soon enough, getting her back on her feet.

From the dark entrance of the cave, a different pair of silver eyes gazed out at the bright world. Their owner was a bit more timid, however, and simply watched with a cocked head as Mahvash toddled this way and that and then flopped head-over-paw. Oh no!

The dark cub gave a small chirp out of impulse and then moved one paw forward. Then another. Then another. On wobbly, over-sized feet she crept out boldly from the den site and made towards her sister. ...But then something large and dark and fluffy righted Mahvash and the little, dark female stopped. She blinked for a moment and pondered the fluffy, black lion in slight confusion. Who wa -- OH! DADDY! A smile spread over the cub's face upon her realization and she flicked her tail up around her legs in excitement.

Not wanting to miss out on the Daddy-fun, she moved to stumble over to his fuzzy body, but something caused her to attention to...well... switch over to something else.

Upon looking down, Rasa'parvaneh noticed that she had no front feet anymore! Panic over-took her for a moment and she drew back and lifted one foot. When it easily slid out from the golden sand, she cocked her head to the side and then placed her foot back down. It sunk a little back into the loose ground. She then pulled out her other foot and then same thing happened with it; it came out with ease and then sunk when she put it back down.

....Oh, this was TOO interesting....

In almost a fit of glee, Rasa shoved her front paws forward and down into the sand until her chin was grazing the tiny, golden particles. She gave an innocent, naive giggle, and then tried to pull her legs out... Only they wouldn't come out. She gave another pull, and her back feet slipped and her butt slid right underneath her. She was totally stuck...

Her nose lifted into the air and the corners of her mouth fell sharply. She flattened her ears and glanced nervously about, panic resurfacing in her gut. After giving one last tug, she did what any little girl would do: she called for her daddy.

She actually didn't even "call," as in a verbal yelp. Oh no, instead she mewled and chirped and squeaked in all manners and volumes that conveyed any type of urgency. She wanted out NOW.

Awaken by her sister's calls; Ziba shook her head to clear it of the funny images she saw. Giggling, the little white cub steadied herself as much as she could before she started toward the outside. Sometime she saw scary things, nightmares her mother called them, but this time she saw something funny. Even through the falling and tripping, her spirits were up.

She didn't go to her fallen sister, because she saw her mother. Too young not to trust what she saw, she assumed everything was real and flowed with it. Waving unsteadily, the young cub tried to avoid whatever tripped her twin. If anything got Vasha, it would likely get her to. Bumping her nose into Mahvash in an uncoordinated attempt at a causal affection gesture, she smiled. The sun killed her eyes a few minutes that would be her excuse. Backing up into the shade her father produced, she looked up at him and laughed through her words, "You shouldn't teach climbing, Daddy, you fall funny!" He had been alright when she saw him fall, so it was okay to laugh, a good warning should he try it.

Upon hearing Rasa'parvaneh's chorus of distress, Senatla could not lay still. Getting up, she lightly pushed out the laziness through the nose. Moving carefully to avoid stepping on any of the little bodies still in the den, she made her way to her sunken daughter. Without Mahvash or Ziba Azar in the den, it can be harder to distinguish the dark small bodies from one another. It was a reason the twins reminded her so of Sewelo, he was also largely white, though they still beat him in the body painting competition using white.

It was hard to believe, she mused as she reached down and carefully grabbed the scruff of Rasa'parvaneh's neck, that things could be so wonderfully different. Jaws that could kill in an instant were transformed in to loving hands when it came to her darling cubs.

Taking her tail she made a few broad sweeps of the sand to try and smooth it down some before placing the little girl back onto the sand, "You'll get used to it, Rasa, sand is the hardest thing to learn to walk on." Giving the cub a lick on the cheek, her eyes turned back to her mate.

The first time she had cubs, they had so little time before they were forced to move and stay on the move. Never, ever, would she allow them out of her sight. Here they were perfectly safe, yet she wondered if she could let go of it when they became more coordinated.

As her sisters climbed out into the daylight, Bhavini lingered in the darkness. She intensely wanted to go outside and have a look around herself, but she was a little more cautious and thoughtful about it. The cub saw how their paws sunk in the sand and decided that it must be hard to walk on, at least for ones so small. She crept forward after her mother, taking her first few tentative steps into the sand. Vini blinked at the strange new texture, her tail flicking in quiet amazement.

Blinking as she stepped into the sun, she looked around curiously, nearly forgetting that her family was there, her jaw slowing falling open. It all looked so different from in the cave. Now that she could taste it, smell it, touch it up close, she felt almost overwhelmed. It was a lot to explore. Picking up her feet, she started to wobble off in another direction that caught her interest, making soft little mewls of pleasure at finally being out of the den.

User Image Hadaya was uncertain. This wasn't a new experience for the young lion, but it was certainly not a pleasant one. He frowned at the ground, listening to all the bustle in the cave nearby. His ears had perked when he heard a cub crying out for attention or help, but by the time he had padded from his hiding spot near the den he saw that Sen had taken care of it. Digging his paws at the earth beneath him awkwardly, he didn't know if he should be back and hide, or stay where he was revealed. If they had spotted him it would be an odd time for a retreat, after all.

Swallowing hard, he sat down heavily, sinking a little into the sand. Lanky limbs kept tight against his long frame, the young lion set his tawny eyes on the den and smiled gently as he spotted all the cubs moving about. It was strange to imagine his family, this relatively new group of lions he had been adopted by, had already grown in the short time he had known them. He didn't think he had any right to call himself their brother, though. He was still a stranger, after all. They knew him well enough, but he was so bad with cubs that he hadn't really shown his true self to them. Now they were old enough to understand who he was.

That worried him. What if they didn't like him? What if they all decided to shun him? Little cubs held more power than they knew, after all. They could theoretically set the tone in the cave. He wanted them to like him, but he didn't know how. Play with them? But he could hurt them. He had big, clumsy paws. Talk to them? What would he say? He just knew he would tell a story that would scare them.

He watched as another cub emerged from the den, quietly contenting himself in observing, not wanting any of them to get into trouble. If he could, he'd protect them. Or do his best.

Rasa's body fell over as her mother licked her, which triggered a small giggle-fit to issue its self from the cub's mouth. As she rolled over and got back on her feet, the issue of the sand and its sinking properties had already left her mind and she trundled away without any real wordy response. She continued to sink here and there, but honestly she no longer thought anything of it.

Taking a few more steps away from her mother, Rasa paused for a second and watched Bhavini trounce away as well. She canted her head, and then made a series of clumsy hops and pounces towards her in what appeared to be an attempt at running.

She got about a few inches away from her sister's tail before she skidded and splashed sand forwards with her front paws. A small smack at Bhavini's white tail-tuft was attempted, but Rasa jumped back and missed. It was no matter, though, for she was already gallivanting off in another direction.

Clumsily she ran (or tried, at least), away from her parents and the den, and inadvertently towards Hadaya. She hadn't seen him earlier, and she didn't notice him until she was but a few feet away.

Her giggles stopped, she skidded partially to a halt and then hopped backwards in a series of funny steps for about a foot or so, and then tripped up and flopped onto her bottom. She gave a look of surprise, but didn't cry or turn tail. ...This lionman looked familiar, she knew, but ...what was his name again?

Rasa got up off her bum and cocked her head, then it came to her -- HIS NAME STARTED WITH AN H, RIGHT?...RIGHT? A large smile spread over her small, dark features, reaching her pale eyes and making them a little squinty.

"HAAAaaaaa..." she mewled, but she faltered and drifted off a second later. That wasn't his name! "Umm... Haaaadd... Haaaaa... haaaa ha HA HA!" she ended, giggling as she gave up on trying to say or remember his name. Whatever, she'd remember it eventually. In the mean time, she plodded over to him, a smile still plastered all silly-like on her face.

Last to wake, but not least, little Saharan came waddling into the sun, blinking furiously at all the light coming from the sky and the ground. It was strange ground too. She eyed it suspiciously, working at it with her feet. Huh. It was funny, hard as it was to walk on, if she shoved her feet down deep into it, it sort of helped hold her up. That would work...probably. She wandered past her mom and hurried on, seeing her sister being bathed and eager to escape the same fate.

When that same sister came bumbling past her, stumbling and rolling towards a somewhat-familiar face, she chased after as fast as she could, thinking it was some sort of game. She half pounced-half draped herself over Rasa, blinking up at the tan lion only long enough to meet his eyes before looking away quickly, shy and unsure.

"Hadaya," she whispered to Rasa, covering the hint by tugging on her ear.

Of the siblings playing in the sand, there was one who was not among them, dark fur blending in well with the darkness. Rashne had not left the den yet, his lavender eyes peering thoughtfully out into the light, watching his sisters play and explore the outside world. As of yet they had not been allowed to venture out into the open sky, consoled by the words that one day, when they were older, they would be allowed. That day had come rather abruptly for the black cub, who had been content to stay in the den and listen to whatever his mother and father had to say. Of course, he had watched them both leave on several occasions, but had never really wondered where they were going. That was not to say he was afraid of leaving, he was just not as curious as Vini or Mahvash.

Unfortunately, this left the cub slightly distressed when all his sisters had left, leaving only he inside. Of the cubs of Senatla's litter, Rashne was the eldest of them, if only by a few minutes. He had been born just slightly before any of his siblings, something that was beginning to mean more and more to him as he slowly grew. He was also the only male of this litter, which kind of made things a bit awkward for the black cub as well. Not that he couldn't play with his siblings -- he liked his sisters, in the short time he had known them. The problem was more in the fact that he didn't exactly know how a male cub should act, and he certainly did not want to disappoint his father. Some of his sisters seem timid of the outside world... but did that mean a male cub should too? Should he go running out into the world, brave and courageous and unafraid of the dangers and unknown? It was a mystery to him.

Stepping out onto the sand, Rashne paused just slightly outside of the den, sitting back on his haunches and peering around curiously, glancing up at the sky to marvel at it's blueness.

Hadaya watched the approaching cub like it might explode if it got to close. He was up on his paws, leaning slightly back, legs bent in a pose that said he was ready to spring away in a moment, and only his head was keeping him stubbornly rooted. Running from a harmless cub, one that could barely run, would not be the proudest moment of his life, after all, and would usher an inauspicious start to his new familial life.

Still, he really wanted to get out of there before trouble happened.

Looking a little like a cub caught in the path of a stampede, he waited with brimming anxiety as the cub got close and then engaged in a profound word game to try and find his name. The cute way she failed did not ease him, though he could not stop the smile on his muzzle, and he drew a shaky breath as he lowered his nose closer to her.

"That's close, I guess," he said, blinking at her. This one was Rasa, if he had heard Sen correctly. He offered a strange expression that was supposed to be a goofy grin, but came out looking like he needed to use the bathroom, "I could be a Ha. Seems to fit. Maybe... uhm... you should... go play... over there?" He picked up his paw and motioned to the den, nudging her accidentally by misjudging the distance between them. He quickly put his paw down, distressed that he had misjudged how much strength he had used as well.

"Eep!" He yelped, half way to an apology before the second cub showed up without him having noticed. It said his name, though he could hardly hear it over his thundering heart. To be so startled by a nearly new born cub! It was shameful. And something he was entirely willing to accept as normal, which would undoubtedly happen again. "Er. Hello, ...little cub."

He couldn't remember this ones name.
PostPosted: Tue Dec 16, 2008 5:48 pm

One by one, each of the cubs came stumbling out of the den, some a bit more clumsily than others. Thili attempted to watch all of his cubs at once, and mostly accomplished nothing more than getting his eyes crossed. How in the world had Senatla managed to watch six cubs without help before? Briefly, he was confused by Ziba’s words… had he ever fallen in front of the cubs before? He couldn’t recall… oh! But, of course, Siti had probably been by once or twice. No doubt, she had entertained the cubs with vast tales of how clumsy their father had been as a cub. “Alright, Ziba. I promise.”

As Senny helped Rasa up, Thili kept his focus on Bhavini. The red and silver female cub was a lot more adventurous than he liked, honestly. No, scratch that; he loved that she was interested in the world all around. He just wished she would be more interested in the world immediately around them. Like within three feet of the den.

Shaking himself off, the black lion called to his daughter. “Vini… don’t wander too far. And stay away from the water’s edge!” After he had said it, he realized, it was probably a mistake; it probably sounded like a challenge to little cub ears. At least the others were mostly staying behind… especially Rashne, the only boy in the litter. Ah! Speaking of boys, Hadaya was here! That was a nice surprise. Thili smiled broadly at the young lion, greeting him with a brief nod. “Hello, Hadaya. Watch your tail; they’re vicious little hunters.” The sentence included a chuckle, indicating that Thili wasn’t being serious when he said this. Honestly, being mauled by a cub was one of the most adorable things ever.

He nudged Rashne’s shoulder with his nose before directing his attention towards the deep blue sea. It was far enough away from the den so that wandering cubs wouldn’t drown, but it was still a breath-taking sight from here. “See that, Rash? That’s the ocean.”

~.~

Speaking of being mauled by a cub… Mahvash pouted when she saw her attack had been foiled. Foiled, I say! Her twin’s nudge diminished that disappointment, however, because her sister was a far more tempting target. “Grr…” she attempted a fierce-sounding growl and attempted to tackle Ziba, gnawing on one ear for a brief moment before getting bored. The only thing smaller than the cub was her attention span. In this case, the thing that had caught her attention was Haddy, the brown lion.

Immediately abandoning her sister, Vash ran---half-stumbled and half-ran anyway---towards Hadaya. The soft sand made it all the more difficult, but even that became a game. She would attempt to bat at the sand, giggling all the while. Eventually, she made her way to her older adopted brother’s paws. “Haddy!” she made her own attempt at saying his name, looking rather pleased with herself.

My… wasn’t Hadaya popular with the cubs today?

Once Rasa was righted, her attention went back to the den. Next out looked awestruck. It was adorable to see such a look on her little face. The smile it brought forth quicky started to fade out as the cub got further away. While she wished for all her cubs to explore the world, the over protector in her winced at every step Bhavini took. Here where they were safe, she had made a pledge to not hold her cubs too close.

Last litter she was lucky in a manner, her sons and daughters were mostly attached to her hip of their own violation. What they didn't do on their own, she called them and they listened. Now, they weren't traveling for their lives and safely, only nature could harm them. Didn't stop her for wishing she could keep them tied to her. Vini got most of her attention because she was watching the cub so closely, itching to grab her by the scruff and bring her back.

Hadaya came out, an event that delighted her. With most of her cubs from her first litter already out on their Seeking rite of passages, so the new litter couldn't meet the old. Sure, she talked about her other cubs a lot, but it wasn't the same as being able to play with their big brothers and sisters. Hadaya hadn't left yet, not a bad thing considering he had such little time to adjust to being in the pride in the first place.

One by one she watched her little girls start to swarm Hadaya, poor boy looked so scared. The adorable little fluffs were harmless, except for their super sharp teeth to which she could attest to. Rasa was so cute, giggling so much as it was, a happy little cub now gone to see her big brother.

Next, she watched Saharan come out, she had a better memory for names, it seemed. Keeping an eagle eye on it all, it didn't take long for her to become concerned that her little son hadn't emerged. So strange, her first litter was almost all boys, now she had almost all girls. Unaware of her son's concerns, she thought little of his behavior as being anything but normal. Most of her other sons were very outgoing, but Asphamet was very laid back, not one to wake early or do much of what his brothers and sisters did so enthusiastically.

Finally seeing the only cub of her litter to sport the main pelt coloring of their father, she smiled warmly to the little boy, "Good morning, Rashne." Thili came up to take interest in his son, so she backed up a bit and turned her gaze to the other cubs. There was bonding she had that he could not, after all, she was their food for a while and carried them within her, she had a great head start.

Hadaya's voice came to her and called her, he sounded so unsure and scared. Turning to watch the poor adolescent, she only hoped he would get used to having little siblings and feel more comfortable. "Hadaya, its alright, son, they won't break." She didn't need to tell him to watch his tail, Thili had done so.

~*~

Ziba was pacified by her father's agreement not to climb any more. He didn't need to; there were other leopards to teach climbing. Falling the stubby ones could do all on their own. "Someone else already--ow!" Tacked and mauled by her twin, Ziba was quick to growl playfully in return. She didn't need to fight Vasha off, Hadaya saved her just by being there.

Rolling over, she shook hard then scrambled after Vash. For a little while, it looked like she would make it there without tumbling, but then she fell into the disturbances in the sand left from Vash's falling.

Misjudging her breaks, she tried to stop and ended up falling forward, landing with her head hitting where Vash's legs were. Laughing, she looked up to Hadaya sweetly and told him, "We won't run, your safe here too, Momma and Daddy are here." There was another cub that ran from Hadaya when he was small, she had seen it happen. Either that, or he was going to get smaller and lose his mane then it will happen, one could never be sure with these things.

Rashne looked slightly startled as he heard his mother's voice permeate through the fits of laughs and screams of delight, shaking head head once and blinking over at Senatla, her lavender eyes mirrored in his own. "Goodmorning," He replied with a happy grin, getting up from where he had sat by the den and taking a small step forward, his paw sinking down a bit into the sand. Briefly he drew his eyes down towards it, making comical faces as he tried to figure out what he was suppose to do about it. In the end the male cub ended up ignoring the strange sinking sensation he felt, and instead opted just not to move for a while, until he got his bearings.

His attention, however, was drawn back to reality as he felt a strong presence behind him and a muzzle against his shoulder, nudging him a bit. Immediately the black cub looked up, a look of aw overtaking him. "Dad!" he cried, both in surprise and delight. The large black lion was the source of much inspiration for the young cub. Being the only male of the litter, not to mention having five sisters, it was even more important to him to make Thilivhali proud of him. He was all Rashne aspired to be, so large and majestic and... well, with his limited vocabulary, that was all he could come up with. So it was with much curiosity that he looked towards where his father was pointing, the large blue expanse of water widening his tiny eyes. "What... is it? It's very big... did a piece of the ceiling break off and fall down?" Rashne asked curiously, looking back up at the black and silver lion.

Hadaya blinked, finding himself swimming in cubs now. His heart was in his throat. They were so cute, and he knew he would love them easily, but... they were all so close, and he was so prone to accident... he couldn't help but think he might get too excited and knock one of them upside the head. That would be awful. Or what if he stepped on their tails? Or poked them with his claws? What if he sneezed again? The last time he had sneezed on a cub it had been traumatic.

Though, more for him than the baby, as it turned out. Still, he continued to feel guilty about it and doubt he would ever be comfortable with lions of the youngest variety.

Hadaya smiled at them all, though, his chest swelling with an unfamiliar emotion he couldn't quite name. When Vash called his name he broke out into a grin, glad at least that Haddy was closer to his real name than Ha. If they had all taken to calling him the latter he would have felt like they were constantly laughing at him. No points for his confidence there. He kept Thili's advice in his head, tucking his tail under him just in case.

They wouldn't break. That's what Sen had said, right? He took a deep breath and tried to force himself to relax. He still almost choked when another cub came crashing in. That certainly had looked painful. He smiled when Ziba spoke to him and nodded. "I know I'm safe, and you guys too. We'll have fun... right?"

Wow...suddenly Hadaya was so popular! Saharan was nearly crashed into by more than one sibling as they jostled for a place near their new best friend-sibling-thing. She looked up at the face of the one who seemed to have enraptured the lot, and noticed that he didn't seem all that pleased. Maybe he was afraid he'd step on them? His feet sure looked big enough, and in her young mind the sand was just as hard to walk on for him as it had been for her. Yeah, that was probably it. She nudged her way through the crowd and thumped her head against his side. "Don' worry!" She encouraged him, though her quiet voice was probably lost over the chatter.

Thinking it might be best to let the others play with Hadaya for a bit, she started to amble back towards her parents. But then, behind her Daddy...so much blue! What was it? It looked like sand, sorta, with little hills and all, but it moved, and it was blue! So blue!

With a glint in her eye that bordered between excitement and overwhelming curiosity, she changed course. The sand was still a challenge, and unfortunately it looked like it extended all the way to the big-blue-something, but no matter. She was a cub on a mission! Oof! Hey, what was this Dad-shaped thing in her way?! Didn't it know she had a big-blue-something to investigate! Oh...it was Dad after all!

The playful squall that had been emitted from Rasa's mouth when Saharan took a nom at her ear was suddenly and utterly lost under the chatter and movements of the rest of her sisters who seemed to have just sprouted right out of the ground. The dark crimson cub was knocked a little this way and that, but she didn't seem to mind -- the words that had been whispered into her ear from one sister had managed to not be bustled about like her body had been.

"Ha...HADAYA!" Rasa suddenly chirped up, and rather loudly at that. Her ears perked themselves high atop her head and she raised herself to her toes. For a second her face went into some sort of stupor and her legs went a little stiff, but only out of surprise at herself. FIRST WORD. OH YES.

"Hadaya!" she yelled again, and this time laughed and smiled. She broke free from her gaggle of siblings and ran over to where Saharan was at Hadaya's side. Though when her sister left, Rasa stayed for a moment and jumped up and rested her from paws on the older lion's body.

"HADAYA Hadaya Hadaya!" she continued to chant his name. Loudly and happily. See, she knew his name.
