Last year, I had the greatest, most interesting History teacher ever. But that's a story for another day. Well, one day, we were talking about vikings, and he started talking about how we now use vikings as mascots and stuff, say that they're cool, and generally enjoy seeing them and impersonating them, as they are badass. The same with pirates. They're having their highly romanticized selves portrayed in movies, plays, and even children's television shows as fun people. But in reality, these groups were savage murderers, thieves, and rapists, who preyed on the weak and defenseless. The vikings enslaved the slavic peoples for a time, hence the term slavs, meaning slaves. Thorsen (the teacher) said that if we brought someone from a contemporary time period, if they saw us portraying vikings and pirates the way we did, they would be terrified. He compared it to a Holocaust survivor seeing people imitating Nazis and saying how cool they were. On the other hand, I love lyrics that offend the "normal" people, and am all for freedom of speech in artistic expression. Plus, vikings are badass. What are your thoughts on the subject?

I completely understand that vikings and pirates were savages. But as far as vikings are concerned, you have to consider that they also had a rich culture behind their brutish exploits. I mean, their own belief system with their epic and heroic myths and legends, as well as scandinavian music and such. There's more to take into consideration than the raping and pillaging aspect.

Well, DUH.
Everyone already knows vikings were savage brutes. BUT they did ALOT of good things as well. They basically jump started sailing and what not. They found new territories, ect, ect ect ect ect......

My Hollow Well, DUH. Everyone already knows vikings were savage brutes. BUT they did ALOT of good things as well. They basically jump started sailing and what not. They found new territories, ect, ect ect ect ect...... Still, there is a point in comparing vikings to Hitler's nazis. Hitler's terror policy also created quite a few good things. Like for example half of today's medicine is based on what nazi 'medical researchers' found out in concentration camps. But let's put it in a different way: was any group of middle ages and earlier anything that different from Vikings? Arabs with their holy war (and taking slaves), Christians with their crucades (and taking slaves), you name it. I'm not even mentioning raping because that was a normal practice during wars then. The only difference between Vikings and say, Germans, in 10th century was that Vikings did this for life, Germans did this because they wanted more territory. Their deeds were about the same in the end. And btw: Slavs != slaves. Slava means glory or fame in most Slavic languages. The teacher was purely wrong here wink . (Yes, there are different theories as to where that name came from, but none of them looks into English slave.)
