For Junior High and Highschoolers
You can't really do it by yourself, but you could pressure a teacher to put together an EF tour. They have a reasonablly priced (about 2300 with airfair I assume) 9 day tour of Japan where you go to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. I did a tour with them to Australia for my senior trip and they're fast paced but well worth doing.

College Students
Summer at Waseda This program gets pushed on us every year since my school doesn't offer a summer Japan program. This six week program is at Waseda University in Tokyo (Via Portland State in Oregon) It's gonna be at least 6,000 just to do the program and to fly there, but it's in summer so it won't interupt your studies.
