Benita was patrolling her territory alone, half hoping she could meet another helix. Even if that helix didn't want to join her pack. She was still a bit restless from having such a lonely life. She kept her head and tail held high, displaying her alpha status even while no one was there to see.
Her large dragon wings flared out, fanning herself. It was summer and the heat was getting to her. She didn't like it but she tolerated it as best she could. Her ears were perked, listening in on her bamboo forest. She felt like hunting the hard way today, just to challenge herself.
How many winged helixes hunted from the ground now and then? Besides she loved to stretch her legs out as far as they could go and run like the wind that usually carried her with the clouds. The day was young and life would get better like it had been before back when she had a pack. Thankfully all of her teachings had been over, she knew everything she needed to about leading, hunting, ranks, fights and so on.
She caught a whiff of a helix she did not know and started tracking it, intending to socialize.

Joska was wandering... Which wasn't something unusual. Only now, he was no longer the scrawny little pup that always seemed to be snug in Jaden's maw.
He was still small, and he would probably always be small... But his dreams and stead-fast determination were bigger than any bear! And he knew well enough to stay away from any bears. Long gone were his days where he fantasized about bear hunting in the swamps. He knew better than that and didn't want to end up someone's dinner.
He was old enough now that wandering wasn't that much of a problem. He hated to admit that he missed his parents and his siblings, but he needed to get out and experience life! He needed to learn what it would take to make his own pack (as that was his new goal, he would be the greatest warrior that EVER lived AND he would be an alpha of his own pack, just like Jaden).

Benita was downwind of a male she had tracked for several minutes now but she didn't plan to stay hidden. She flared her wings out as far as they could stretch, letting the wind catch in them. The smell should hit the youth's nose sometime soon. She didn't rush to catch up to him, she simply strode forward with purpose, announcing her presence without saying a word.
She smiled when she caught sight of him, liking him instantly. He reminded her of herself when she was that young. Seeking knowledge with big dreams in his eyes. He could tell he was thinking deeply about something. Maybe she could coax his questions out of him, she had plenty of experience and knew she could most likely answer them.
"Greetings, you look a little alone. Would you care to accompany me for a while?" She asked, motioned her tail toward a path that ran alongside the border of her territory. There were fewer packs higher up the mountain like she lived so she wondered where he came from.

He caught the stranger's scent fairly quickly, well before she came near and spoke. The curious adolescent had his intrest peaked, especially because this winged Helix was interested in him. He hadn't seen many of them and he was very, very intrigued with her and her territory.
His tail wagged hastily as he peered up at the Alpha that had approached him.
"Just a little, but hey! All is good! ... Can I?" He was new to this... And from the way she held herself, he thought of Jaden. She must of been an Alpha, so he held a more submissive position, like he had seen others do before.

She took an even bigger liking to him when she observed his reaction to her. He was optimistic, not depressed in the least about being alone. He wasn't insolent or defiant in the least and respectfully submitted to her rank. He asked permission to be sure she was alright with his presence. Such a polite one!
Folding her wings to her side she smiled and nodded kindly. "Come, join me for a walk." She started heading gracefully down the path she had shown him. Her pace was slow and unhurried, there was no rush. She was here for a pleasant conversation.
"I am Benita." She introduced herself.

He followed her, but tried to remember everything he had seen and heard from his parents. It would take some time to figure everything out and if she was an Alpha... Well, maybe she would be willing to give him some pointers. He would certainly remain on his best behavior! He stayed alongside her, but a couple of pawsteps back, so he wouldn't pass her up at all. That should be polite, right?
"I'm Joska! My den was, uh... Closer to the Neutral territory, I think... I just left it." He grinned amiably as he padded along. Yup, he was definitely a young one and fresh from the den.

He minded his manners and wasn't jumping around full of energy yet still had a happy grin on his face, good! He wouldn't be thought of as an overgrown pup since he brought about a sense of maturity rare in teen youth these days. She was curious about his upbringing. "Your so well mannered for your age, tell me, were your parents alphas? Whoever raised you, did so well." She commented.
She listened to his comment about leaving his home and where he once lived. "I was wondering where you hailed from. It's a common practice carried out by many a teen to leave home looking to learn more, find themselves, and what they were meant to be."
"How has your journey been for you Joska? Have you any preferences in what you desire to become? As an alpha female I should be of good assistance to you." She offered lightly. She was in a pleasant mood over the nice conversation.

He continued to pad alongside of the Alpha (and struggled to remain mature in appearance, because the fresh from pup hood part of him wanted to clown around), tail wagging slightly as he listened to her speak.
"My Papa is, his name is Jaden! And my Mama, she's a beta. She's Lunar." He spoke their names with a bit of pride, as if Benita should definitely know just who they are. And why shouldn't she? Jaden was by far the BEST ALPHA EVER. Or at least he still was in his runty child's mind.
"I like this... Being alone, anyways. It's new! And fun! Papa and Mama always made me stay close 'cos I'm the runt... But I like to explore and learn all there is." He told her lightly. He was certainly glad that he had found her! She was nice (which is always better than running into someone wanting to chase him off) and she was offering to help him...
"I wanna be like my Pa. I wanna start my own pack once I know what I need to know."

Her ear stayed trained in his direction while he spoke, tail swishing slowly side to side as she walked. "I could mentor you if you'd like. Teach you some fighting skills, how to make good choices, how to lead helixes with different personalities, teach you what to do in certain situations, introduce you to different ranking helixes." She announced.
She didn't think it would hurt anything helping him out. It might just give him the boost he needs. "Would you like that or no?" She asked, turning to gaze down at him while they walked. She sincerely hoped in her heart that he would get what he wanted.
All pups had dreams and not everything got to say their dream came true. He was reaching high with his dream and she would hate to be there if he failed and ended up disappointed. She had had to go through several hardships to make it to Alpha rank. Her driving force was the fact that before their death they had wanted, no, expected her to grow into a beautiful alpha female that would take over their pack after they aged. Too bad most of their dream never came true, except for her.

Her words were exactly what he had hoped to hear, though he had been careful not to actually ask in the beginning. He wanted her help if she would help, and now she was asking him! It was perfect!
"Yes! Yes ma'am, I mean, please?" It was almost impossible for the youngster to hide th excitement in his voice. She would actually help him! He would learn what he needed for sure and she would find that he was a rather attentive pupil.

She chuckled quietly at his eagerness. "Certainly! I'll do my very best, I hope you will be a good student and learn well." She answered, thinking of lessons she could teach him to begin with. A pop quiz was in order!
"What do you know so far about Alphas?" She asked suddenly, turning a corner as the path veered off to the left. They were circling her territory. She did not want to leave it for long. This way she was still close by to it.

"I'll pay attention real well, I promise!" He replied enthusiastically and his tail wagged behind him, proving his eagerness. "I wanna learn all I possibly can about everything!"
He followed her as the path veered; so she wanted to know what he knew, huh?
"Well... The Alphas, they're the boss of the pack an' they don't take guff from anyone. An' they protect their pack and they have to be good leaders and they have to take care of their followers."

She nodded her head. "We'll see how good a listener you are in time." She said. Not every student pup she had tried to teach had been good on word of being great learners. "Good. What of betas?" She asked, planning to go on down the line of ranking.

"I will be and I'll prove it." He challenged playfully and his long, gray tail swept the earth behind him as he watched his new mentor with an eagerness to learn.
"Betas... Uh, they are second. You know, like second in command? They do what the beta says and they help keep the pack safe, too, right? They keep order and keep the other helix in line and stuff."

"Very true." She confirmed what he said about betas, nodding. "How about gammas?" She asked, keeping at her test. He was doing well so far but alphas and betas were well known ranks, gammas, and omegas were sometimes tricky and confused pups on what they do. She would correct him on anything he said wrong and hopefully he would do well. She stretched her wings out, offering them to the sunshine. The warm rays felt good.
