Alright, this is a problem that, as an artist, has been bugging me for a long time.... and its rampant in the yugioh fandom. Art theft? You might think. I'd never allow that, one artist taking credit for anothers work and not asking for it! Well, that's good.... But that's only one type of art theft. There's another that most people here blatantly disregard, despite the wishes of the original artists- taking work without permission. You may have excuses- 'their site is in japanese, I can't read it!' "I don't know where it came from, so its ok!' It's not ok. Not if you have any respect for the artist who originally created the work. And a lot of these artists don't WANT their work to be distributed without their permission, english or not. It's not a compliment, it's frustrating! Most images don't even link back and credit the original artist! I'm not trying to bash anyone, and I know I'm probably gonna get half the people here pissed off at me, but its true.... you really have to consider the wishes of the original artist. And the following are a list of artists who do not want people using their works without permissionKukuretai (closed do to the massive art theft)W-Bind (closed)Trick3Elite YuugiouSetoenDark MinisterMaster KonThis is by no means a complete list, either. **sighs** Well, I hope I didn't offend anyone, but please, read what these artists have to say, and keep that in mind. They have given you great pleasure with their art, haven't they? It's the least you can do to respect it. For more info, read what the ARTISTS say here

hmmm can't say anythign about this because i haven't place any art i have done on the web. which is ok, so i can prevent this sort of stuff to the artist. i respect artist work and i don't really like to keep original drawings becuase its there unless they let me too.
i got a friend her name is anna well she draws really good. well many liked her chracters and wanted to keep them. but of course she sold them becuase she didn't feel right of giving it away. her manager (her older sister) keeps records who they sold it and stuff so if her art work does go succesful then they can copyright it like i did on my art.
yes i coprright my original art work due to some people getting off ideas and then claiming is there. i even have the name copryrighted so in case someone wants it they have to tell me. i have it only on a website but can't be copy by any sot or you get a virus if try to. yes i can re write stuff becuase im a nerd of computers.
so i agree with you and the respect and not copy of art work. at least asked or give full credit of it, like the art work or fan art of people. i do. becuase im assitant manager of a yugioh website and we give full credit of art work.

Its not just credit- its permission as well. This is what the artist want.... and some might not even give you that. This is something people need to learn to accept. x.o

Eeps...I will keep this grouping in mind. I didn't realize it at the time, but some of my icons make use of graphics found on one of the sites. sweatdrop

Hmm. I wonder if my Suicide Ward thread on here counts as art theft. It probably does, sorta. So I suppose I'd be making a hyprocrite of myself if I said I don't like art theft, neh? Really, I think the biggest thing about it that pisses me off is when people claim artwork as their own. If you use it for graphics on a sight where you don't make any money off it, I think it might be ok... My banners on the Ward are all off of Janime.info, and we all know that sight doesn't give you any clue as to who the artist are. So as much as I'd like to tell you guys who originally made the banners, it's becoming harder and harder to do so...

I can tell you who made the one in your sig, if I can find it again. x.o
But generally, artists have a policy of 'No usage without permission.' It doesn't matter if they're japanese or american, the rules still apply... as that last link shows.

<.<...I didn't make my sig! *dies* Oi, you know, on one hand, it is kinda annoying that I'm not making any money off my sig and simply trying to get people to a thread. I'm not claiming the work as mine and I really don't see anything wrong with it. However, I guess I can see where artist would get mad about not getting credit. Well, I'd give credit if I myself had any clue where it's from. Unfortunatly, I don't.

I think this topic is a really good example of thievery, that way some ppl can get the message. And I don't usually save pictures any more, i just save the website that its on. Also, I usually have some problems drawing eyes and hands, thats why I go to the web that the picture i like is on and draw it that way, thats not wrong is it sweatdrop ?

FayteLeingod thank u that does help alot mrgreen your welcome, i think its ok if you change abit its pose and add some of your own talents. you might use the person's art as a reference or something to help you. doodling is good and you can practice drawing sorts of stuff, just get a paper and draw doesn't need to be perfect you'll get the hang of it.

I agree that thievery is wrong, but I'm curious how this would work for a website like Janime that reproduced many artists' works and put them out for the public? Is taking Janime's fanart and using it in a signature wrong? (like mine?) I'm not sure, because I'm horrible with copyrights, but if it's considered thievery, I'll change my sig.

Janime has no right to distribute that art, and didn't ask the artists permission. It's disrespectful to the original artists.... most of which don't even get any credit at all! (That's why Janime pisses me off- it encourages thievery and its a huge site to boot. >.<) ALWAYS, ALWAYS ask the artist before using their work, other then looking at it for yourself. If you dont know the artist, don't use it. Everyone uses, for example, those adorable chibis from Kukuretai. She NEVER gave anyone permission, and because of it, her site is now closed and NO ONE gets to enjoy her new work. stare (Doujinshis aside.) Obviously, this isn't your doing or anything.... but its the result of art theft. There's really no excuse- artists work hard, and its something that makes their site unique. To just take that away from them without even blinking at them is just wrong.

On a good note, Janime is deleting all their fanarts that they don't have permission to use. Go and check the fanart section on the site, it says so. biggrin
