What is everyone's opinion on sugar? I think this list is scapegoating a tad, but there are some valid points about avoiding sugar.

I might sometimes have sugar in chai tea if I run out of agave nectar, but that's about it. Besides the occasional bit of organic chocolate or cake, I don't eat anything that has sugar in it either. I don't think it's so bad for you if you don't eat it often, like anything I guess.

O_O I should show my husband this list. Then maybe he'll stop demanding so much sugar in his tea.

Eating sugar by itself (as in the refined sugar packets) starts a process called glycation. In whole foods - such as an apple - the sugar bit has an enzyme attached to it so it knows where to go. Removing the enzyme and just having the sugar is to your body as having a child run in a candy store without the supervision of an adult.

The "just eating sugar still helps your body because it needs sugar to run" thought is very dangerous.

I've cut down my sugar intake, but this list just inspired me to do more xp

Ah, so Dr. Mercola put that on his website. I'm not surprised - he's often the one of first to raise the alarm on questionable products.

I've also learned the hard way that he's worth paying attention to.

Sometimes I find him too alarmist. OR I start questioning when he's gets too fixated on one topic. But otherwise I think the information presented is better than some other health blogs.

I used to think he was being an alarmist about Splenda, until I found out that it was responsible for my mother's CFS.

Splenda and all fake sugars are just poison, I don't know if anyone could be too alarmist about those. Has anyone noticed the high fructose corn syrup commercials lately? Those things are propaganda from the corn council. That stuff is even worse than sugar. I occasionally use raw sugar in particularly bitter coffee, but that's a rare thing.

Good post, although I want to know if by sugar you mean refined sugar or all sugars, like those in fruits naturally.
PostPosted: Tue May 05, 2009 5:24 am

i think mercola was talking about all refined sugars, not the kind naturally found in fruits.

Now products are being marketed as including "all natural sugar!" "no HFCS!"

it's still sugar. stare

I can personally attest that quitting sugar has made me feel and look a zillion times better, and now if I cheat a little and have some [occasionally in sauces or something], I can tell.

I've dropped a ton of weight without consciously lowering my calorie or fat intake and apparently I'm even less horrendously pale blaugh

There's just no benefits to it; empty calories, c'est tout.

me and my mother just cut suger out of our diet. Suprisingly, most of my cravings have gone. I just eat something when i have a bad craving, takes my mind off the biscuit or peice of chocolate. I'm starting to feel a lot better though!

Stevia is a "fake sugar".

All things need to be in moderation- small amounts of processed sugar cane glucose aren't going to trigger those effects, but whole foods that have all the enzymes and other things attached are better for you.
