The small white haired boy ran ahead of his father with his tail feathers flying airily in the breeze. The small boy was exuberant and happy to be in a place where there were other children playing about at the indoor playground. The emerald eyes flicked in a sort of excited anticipation trying to work with whom he wanted to play with first! So many chances for friends and things to play with the toddler almost seemed overwhelmed with a possibility as he stopped to straighten his small dress, his tri-toed feet peeking out from the matching dress shoes were wiggling. The small dark skinned boy was seemingly very concerned about his appearance.
Ethe’oj walked at a sort of leisurely pace and seemed unconcerned about the odd looks he or his adopted son received. He didn’t occur to the man that others thought of small boys in dresses was mildly unhealthy, though, a majority of people mistook his son for a girl anyhow, until they would be corrected by Ethe’oj or the small boy who giggled while saying so. Several times Ethe had to explain to the boy that it was not appropriate to lift his skirt to prove his gender. That was the only thing the tall metallic looking man had found to be an actual flaw that needed to be corrected.
Another thing that could make people wonder is why the guardian had decided to take his son out during the evening instead of during the day where more 'normal' children played...

D'you think Adele an' Issy'll be here?" Bern asked as she skipped through the door Claudine had opened for her to enter the playground, only it was much later at night this time around. Claudine blinked. Adele and Issy? Those names were familiar...oh, yes! Those were the children that Bern had played with the first time she had been brought here. Claudine gave Bern a tiny smile and looked around, closing the door behind her and reaching down to gently guide the little girl away from the entrance.
"It's possible, but it's rather late...so chances are not in your favor." She heard a groan from Bern and frowned, petting her soft orange hair. "But you could always make new friends. It's best to go out and meet as many people as you possibly can." Now she actually felt guilty; it was Claudine's fault they had to come here at night when most children were at home eating dinner, sure it was possible to cover every part of Claudine's body so she would be protected from the sun but...it was just so bothersome. Bern seemed a bit cheered by her mother's assurance, nodding and grinning up at the vampiress. It was then that a little girl...boy...girl? Another child ran by. Bern's attention was completely torn away from her mother and now she was in 'Play Mode'. Claudine took that as her sign to be banished to the parents' sitting area, blinking at the sight of a metallic looking man. Regardless of how...peculiar he looked, he was still a man and so he still didn't get a second glance. Claudine walked straight to the nearest seat and sat comfortably in it.
Meanwhile the warmer of the two females was running after the other dark skinned child to hopefully convince them to play with her.
You know what, she's just going to assume she's following a girl. Cold Mommy once explained that only girls wear dresses, not little boys! "Heeey~!" She called as she reached out to grab the girl's shoulder and hopefully make her stop.

Ethe’oj didn’t even look so much as give a glance at Claudine. He didn’t even turn toward her as he sat next to her and had begun the odd way of staring straight ahead. Anyone in the parents section seemed to then officially avoid sitting there across from them. He just sat silently his hands upon his lap and he seemed to just watch straight ahead in that odd unblinking manner and his face was expressionless for the moment.
Avery was quite unaware that he was being chased down for a bit of play. He was too caught up in the colors, sights, and sounds. It wasn’t until the other girl touched him that he uttered a soft squeak and whirled around. He looked her up and down with bright emerald eyes and noticed she had similar skin color! There was but one thing for it.
“SISTER!” Avery exclaimed happily as he suddenly latched onto her with an affectionate hug.

Why was she being hugged? What? Huh? What was going on? Did she just call her her sister? Bern blinked and let herself be hugged, way too confused to actually return it. Sister? But she's never seen this girl before! The gears in Bern's head started to turn. Every child she'd met so far had a sibling...and she didn't, but everyone else had one! Even Nice Mommy had a brother! Did this mean that everyone had a sibling? And if she didn't have one she was weird?
...That wouldn't do.
This whole thought process took probably a half a second. Bern squealed with delight and threw her arms around the other girl. "Sister!" Yay! She finally had a sister!
Bernadette wasn't the only one feeling awkward, except she was the only one whose awkward moment seemed to not actually have come up...yet. Claudine, however, was stuck sitting next to a...rock? Was it a rock? The vampiress blinked, glancing up at the person next to her. Well that was interesting.

He blinked and went through a series of expressions that the girl he was hugging did not see. Most of the expressions conveyed amusement. Avery pulled away and lightly placed his hands against the girl’s shoulder and his head shook from side to side, “No, no, no silly! I’m a brother not a sister.” He explained patiently. “I am not a girl! I’m a boy.” Avery wasn’t insulted but flattered instead. The odd boy was always flattered when he was mistaken for a girl. That meant he looked pretty! Girls always looked pretty.
Ethe’oj seemed unaware of the vampiress’ existence outside of his own little bubble that he seemed to draw over himself but he was still sentient and took a random moment to prove it thusly, “Is that young one yours, the one with the orange hair? This one is curious as my son is hugging on to her...” He had seen it or more like glimpsed it before he had moved to sit with the other parents but it was now that he had decided to comment upon it.

Bern watched her newly claimed sister let her go and place her hands on her shoulders...and...shake her head? She frowned when her sister began to deny her and call her silly, about to protest when she heard the word 'brother' and 'boy.' ...Wait, what? Bern blinked and stared at her 'brother' in disbelief.
She stepped back for a moment to look the other child up and down. Yep, they were definitely both wearing dresses. There was no way her new sister was really a new brother! "But you gotsa dress! Boys don't wear dresses! My mommies told me so." Bern nodded sagely as if what she stated was the absolute truth and there was no way it couldn't be.
"Yes, she is..." Claudine crossed one leg over the other and propped her elbow on her knee, holding her head in her hand. This person certainly did speak oddly. "Children hug. They like affection." She paused. "That's your son?" She looked up at the man now with a short doubtful laugh. This guy needed to get his eyes checked! Or, if he really was his son, the son needed to be put in a pair of pants!

Avery tilted his head as he patiently listened to the girl’s befuddling reasons. His brow furrowed a bit and then un-furrowed. He didn’t get the logic that clothes should belong to a specific gender if at all. Clothes were warm, and comfortable. Dresses were the most comfortable of all! The boy felt much better in a dress and couldn’t seem to think of a time he would not wear a dress at all. He fidgeted a bit and then asked the dreaded question, “Why?”
He seemed un-bothered by the show of affection between children and Ethe only nodded once as if to affirm Claudine’s comment. He seemed unable to notice the bit of doubt in Claudine’s voice when she talked of his son. His hands moved and folded upon his lap, “My charge is an odd boy but he is a boy.” Ethe’oj said with an odd infliction of his voice that could have been the sound of pride for his son.

This boy was so silly...but now it looked like she'd made him uncomfortable. Oh no! "Why? Well that's easy! Because..." She paused for a moment to think up her answer. "Because..." Now this was a bother. Bern pouted and crossed one arm across her chest to hold the elbow of the other, her free hand cupping her chin like a detective in deep thought. There had to be a reason only girls wore dresses! She'd never asked why before, she just figured that her mommies knew everything so she didn't need to question it!
After a few minutes of thinking she just blinked, turned back to Avery and shrugged. "I dunno!" She smiled. "Your dress is pretty though! I'm Bern!" Who cared what he was wearing, Bern wanted to play now!
Claudine blinked. This guy was proud? Interesting. Guess it could be stranger; his son could be streaking, but he was at least wearing a dress. "He's lovely." Like a girl. At least their children were getting along.

Avery waited patiently for the explanation going as so far as to start rocking from heel to toe in his dress shoes. It was amazing that the boy had enough balance to do so in the sort of shoes he wore. When none came the white haired boy uttered a cheerful giggle and nodded moving to hug the other girl again as she introduced herself, “Hi sister-Bern!” He seemed stubbornly fixed upon calling her his sister. “I’m Avery!” The spirited boy in drag said in a return introduction.
Ethe nodded slightly in return, “This one does not know why but that boy is my own. It is nice to have a reason to live once more.” The odd man-creature paused a moment or two as if he had run out of things to say before he spoke once more, “Your child is lovely, as well.”

"Hi Brother Avery!" Bern giggled, returning his second hug with a big smile. Everyone else had siblings, so now she had one too! Sure they didn't live together or anything but now they were siblings! The world was okay again.
The girl let go of her 'brother' and hopped back a step, holding her hands behind her back and turning the upper half of her body side to side, rocking back and forth from heel to toe. "Wanna play? S'fun here!" She should know, she played hide and seek and Captain Kitty here before!
Claudine nodded. "I'm growing rather attached to her." Why did this man keeping referring to himself as 'This one'? But as least she knew where he was coming from when he said it was nice to have a reason to live.

Finally! They get to the good things now that the names were out of the way and their relationship was easily established he nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! Playplayplay! Where we play first? What you wan’ play first? I play anything with Sister-Bern!” He bounced from foot to foot suddenly excited to the point of practically bursting into tiny stars (if he could he would). “Never been here ‘fores.”
Ethe gave a small nod in response, “This one is attached to his charge as well. Avery gives my life meaning,” it was a pretty standard parental response.

Anything? Well there was so much they could do! The last time Bern had been here she played hide and seek and Captain Kitty, but neither of those games would work in this situation. Hide and seek was more fun with more than two people, and Avery didn't have a cape...and he didn't look like a kitty. She spotted the swings after a few moments and grinned, pointing at them and looking back to Avery. "Wanna fly?" Sounded like a genius idea!
"I know how that is." Claudine couldn't help the tiny smile on her face. She was given a reason before she found Bern, but that was irrelevant to the conversation.

Avery’s eyes became large and round as he stared at Bern. Fly? They could fly? Here? Oh goodness he must get her to show him how! He was so excited at the prospect that his small hands found Bern’s shoulders as he held her in his grasp as he breathed out, “Show me Sister-Bern. Show Avery how t’fly!”
Ethe gave a small pause and turned his head with an odd slowness to finally gaze directly at Claudine, “It is a sad thing to not have a purpose in life,” he intoned in that oddly metallic sounding voice before his head turned back to gaze forward.

Bern gasped when Avery grabbed her shoulders, staring at him with wide eyes. He was taking her literally? Well...maybe if they jumped off the swings they could fly through the air until they hit the ground! She'd seen lots of other kids do that...but Avery was wearing heels, what if he got hurt like Issy did and had to go home? "Okay! Just um...go give your shoes to your daddy!" The witchling smiled and took off her shoes too, holding Avery's hand and leading them to the area the parents all sat in.
Claudine blinked and looked at Ethe in the corner of her eye when he looked directly at her, still holding her head up in her hand that was propped up by her elbow on her knee. She looked rather lazy like this. She was about to make a comment when Bernadette came running up with the little boy in drag in tow, holding her shoes in her other hand and reaching out for Claudine to take them.
"Here you go, Mommy! Brother Avery and I are gonna go fly on the swings!" Bern grinned, obviously quite happy to have found a new friend. Claudine held out her free hand and Bern put her shoes on it, still smiling up at her.
"Have fun, dear." She didn't bother to correct the 'gonna' this time. She'd do it later. Arianna was always reminding her to loosen up anyway, might as well give her this time to do whatever she wanted.
"We will~!"

"Kay!" He took a quick moment to undo and take off his shoes and then take them up in a free hand as his other grasped Bern's hand as they made their glee-filled way up to their parental units. He was nearly vibrating with excitement as he approached his father with shoes in hand. "Yah! We's gonna flyflyfly." Avery said cheerfully before he noticed that his papa was positioned near Bern's mother. How convenient! His daddy was making friends, too!
"An you play nice with the other kids, kays?" Avery said happily as he patted the odd man's knee.
Ethe took the shoes and blinked down at his son, his attention diverted away from Claudine, "Avery, do not injure yourself." The metal man said with a tone of caution.
"I's not! I has Sister Bern!" The jubilant boy said as he began to run off with Bernie toward the swings.
