for a freshman to play better than an upperclassman? I mean, I'm a sophomore and there's this freshman who can play the claronet better than me. It really erks my nerves to no end! he plays better than some of the juniors as well! Is that right?

Well, have you considered that they may have been playing the clarinet longer than you have? Because... yea. Other than that I don't see how they could help being better than you and the juniors; so, I don't see a problem with it.

It doesn't matter what grade a person is in. I was sitting 5th chair out of over 20 trumpet players, about half of which where seniors and a few juniors in my freshman year. Trumpet is one of the few things I'm actually good at, and age has nothing to do with seating. The best players can't just stop being the best players.
If it really irks you, then practice more and get better.
[and sophomores are still also considered 'underclassmen' as well]
In music, age never matters. Only skill.

I don't see an issue with it. I'm a freshman and I just so happened to inherit the music genes in my family. I'm as good, if not better, than the first chair trombonist in Wind Symphony ( highest band class in my school ). If a person practices enough or just so happens to have a talent for their instrument, then so what if they are better. If you're bothered by it, stop complaining and practice. It isn't their fault they have a drive to be better.

Maybe it has something to do with not being able to spell clarinet.

Me being a musician first, then freshman, I don't really see anything wrong with a freshman playing better than an upperclassman. I'm playing in pit, and already the drumline is impressed with me. I showed them I can play their cadences, but even I gotta be humble because they know what they're doing and I don't.

eh... still sux... I mean, he totally sucked and was clueless during marching band season. hell, i was almost a one person 2nd clarinet. but now that it's the holliday season and we're doing concert band, he's totally pwning me! maybe it's because he's already played some of the music when he was an 8th grader... heck, i dunno...

It could be just talent. Some people are born with it, some have to work their a** off.

Yes, it can be erking, but i don't mind when that happens because those people usually live Only for band and have absolutely nothing else in life that intrests them.
But as much as i live for band, i do have other intrests and cannot devote my entirety to band like they do.
So i just doodle my erks away and bring on the happy thoughts. ^^

there's nothing wrong with that. he's just really good. if you want to complain about it, stop and go practice. get better than him. gloat to yourself.
our second chair trumpet is a sophomore and our third chair trumpet is a freshman. in a section of 3 seniors, 2 sophomores and 2 freshman(thinks she got that right)
maybe he's been playing longer, maybe he takes private lessons. for goodness sakes who cares?

My BD told us during freshman band camp(Whihc occurs 1-2 days before actual band camp) that after the second day, we are no longer freshmen. What he was saying was that we may be new to the school, but we have been playing our instruments for however long we have played, and we know just as much as the others. We don't know the music, neither do they. We don't know the drill, neither do the upperclassmen. Therefore, after we learn to march, we are on the same level with the upperclassman. In concert band, it is the same principle. We all now the notes, nd know how to play our instruments, but we may not of seen the music before, so we are on the same level.
I am being a complete hipocrite right now, but what my high school bd said really hit me. Last year, i hated this seventh grader, because she would always beat me in chair challenges because this one kid(who I hated with my life, by the way) would always distract me when the bD didn't see it, so I would mess up. I was jsut as good at her, but I had less focus. I would get mad at her and hate her because she would *coughcough*unfairly*coughcough* beat me, and get first part(A challenge to me at that point. Our bands went in order of level, not of grade, and I was the only veteran for said advanced band. Therefore, second and third parts bored me and annoyed me.) while I would get second and third parts. But now I realize that it had nothing to do with level, just of focus.
Of course, i had reason to be upset when this converstaion happened at district honor band auditions the same year: Her: If (Me.) doesn't make it, none of us will. Me: Aww. And who makes it? Her. Not me.
I am terrible with face-to-face auditions...
