Vista sucks. I've had my laptop for about a year now and I can navigate it all right--when it lets me. I wanted to delete a corrupted copy of firefox--I seriously had to confirm about twelve times. Then it wouldn't let me save in the same place because I lack administrator permission. There is only one account on that computer. It is an administrator account. And it's mine. scream
It takes windows media player literally--according to a stopwatch--45 seconds to start. I tried to delete it so I could install an earlier, quicker version from another computer instead--I'm not authorized to alter that program in any way.
The computer came with a bunch of junk preinstalled, something's messing with the registry and downloading stuff onto my computer but my antivirus programs aren't catching it, vista takes too much memory... I'm fed up. I'm not much of a nerd but I don't like an OS that's this much trouble.
I'm erasing the hard drive to delete the OS, the junk, and the potential malware. And then I am updating my computer to XP pro. And yes, I mean updating.
I made sure to back everything up first. But I forgot my firefox bookmarks. I need those for school! And... random other things as well, like language translation and items I'm watching... I just lost my research sites for a paper! It's too late to stop erasing--I tried. It wouldn't boot.
Crap. But at least I'll regain control of my computer... And with the amount of memory I got to make Vista run, it should be lightning fast once I switch back to XP.

....So apparently my laptop is ONLY compatible with Vista. Someone needs a good hard kick in the balls for that.
Plan B: Apply for scholarships, use excess for a cheap computer with an operating system that doesn't suck. I'm tempted to get Linux or something, but that has its own set of problems...

Vista takes yet another prisoner...yikes. I have Win XP and never considered Vista. After Win 3.1 it was all downhill. Microsoft likes to release things in beta so as to get the jump on competitors.
I like that idea. Scholarships as disposable income.

A laptop is school related.... Some scholarships allow that sort of thing.
...And my desktop computer is infected with a piece of financially motivated Russian crimeware. I don't have any financial info on that computer, but the stupid thing keeps turning off my firewall and downloading trojans. And it evades my antivirus program. I hate computers.
On a mildly amusing side note, one the backdoor trojan downloader thingies that WAS found had the initials of the president-elect. Methinks the Russians have a sense of humor....

I've heard that all windows based operating systems are more susceptible to viruses, but that's what I'm used to. I don't want to spend a ton of money on a different os just to find that I really don't like it, and then there are compatibility issues....
A friend has converted me to netbook-dom. I'm buying an eee pc with an uber battery as soon as I get enough money. The specs are better than the laptop I have now, plus they are still sold with xp. And talk about portability... carrying a >6 lb laptop with a poor battery around school is not fun.
