Athena walked through the forest, her bow in one hand and an arrow in the other. A second arrow was stuck between her sharp teeth, as she snuck through the trees, completely silent on her light feet. But it was not what it appeared to be. Athena was not actually hunting; she was practicing. She was raised under the principle that one could never truly perfect anything, and that included hunting. Earlier that morning, she had used berry juices as a die to mark targets on random trees through this small portion of the forest. Every time she managed to come upon one of these targets, Athena let loose one of her arrows.
She smirked, the arrow in her mouth wiggling slightly because of the movement, so far she had not missed a single target, even the smallest one she had drawn up withing the leaves of a climable tree. The next target was a lightning struck tree that was easily visible from a distance. This was Athena's long range test. Crouching down, Athena took aim on the distant target and placed her arrow in her bow. She waited a couple moments, taking a few deep breaths, and then she froze, not moving a muscle. A split second later, the arrow was whistling through the trees as it flew true towards its target...

Strolling through the forest, Legolas softly hummed an old tune once taught to him ages ago. For the most part, he was just wandering through the woods, enjoying being there in peaceful surroundings. He took everything in, from the rustle of the tree leaves above, to the birds singing and courting one another, to seeing small insects buzzing about their own business here and there... to the thunk! that was made when an arrow struck a tree ahead.
Now.. that wasn't exactly a natural sight or sound, so that caught his attention the most.
Hm? he thought to himself as he stared ahead with his keen eyes. It wasn't often that he would see archery around. He found that most elders, if taking upon any sort of weaponry, would choose to wield blades.
However, he knew of one other dragonfly aside from himself, that took upon the bow. And if he recalled correctly, she was an adult, gifted with the early ability to change forms due to being destined to elderhood from birth.
Athena.
Looking around, the elder began searching for signs of the other archer in the area. It had been awhile since he last saw her, but he could remember fairly well what she looked like. From a distance, he caught a glimpse of her, where he then slowly made his way to meet with her.

Athena smiled inwardly at her triumph. The wind had picked up just as her arrow was loosed, and she had worried that she hadn't put enough strength behind the release to make the arrow hit its target. But it had, and she was please with herself. Athena was not one to show her emotions outwardly so she simply began to calmly walk toward her target tree, hoping to retrieve the arrow without much of a problem. Sometimes if she put too much power behind a shot, the arrow was impossible to remove.
As she began to move through the trees, a movement caught her eye. She quickly assumed and attack stance with her bow and arrow at the ready, aiming strait at the approaching figure. After the recent battle, during which darkness has ascended upon the forest her parents had told her was safe from all evil, Athena thought she could never really be too careful. But after a quick glance at the elder walking towards her she chuckled and remember him from the battle. Had it not been for him, Athena probably would not have gotten out with so few injuries as she did.
Athena quickly slung her bow over her shoulder and put her remaining arrows away before raising her hand and waving, calling out to the male, "Well found my good man Legolas! How is the prey running...?" This was the normal greeting she used among the hunters when she lived with the humans in peace for most of her life. She was not sure if it was something Dragonfly's said, but it was a good greeting all the same...

For a moment, Legolas paused his advance as he saw Athena aim towards him. He must have startled her, he figured, so he was sure to keep himself from appearing hostile. But it wasn't before long till she realized who she was and lowered her weapon.
With a soft smile, he continued to move towards her, waving lightly in return. It was nice to meet with her once again, in less dire situations than their first meeting.
"It runs well, Athena," he said once he was closer. He found her greeting a little strange as he had not heard many dragonflies speak in such a manner, but he paid no regard to it. To some, his own manner of speech may sound a bit odd in a sense as well.
"And for you, my friend? It has been several full moons since we last met if I recall correctly."

Athena smiled broadly when she heard her greeting returned, maybe she hadn't said it wrong. She also stepped forward a bit until they were able to speak to each other from a normal distance. "It runs freely my good man! And yes... I say it has been far too long." She gestured for him to walk with her as she went to get her arrow, "I have been practicing my archery quite a bit since then. The occurrence made me wary of letting my skills falter in any way."
As they near the tree Athena let a carefully pleasant look fall on her face once more as she realized she had been smiling a looby. The girl hadn't been in good company for quiet a while, ever since her brother left her, so she was glad to have met some one she already... well... somewhat knew. "So, what have you been up to good Legolas? Since our last encounter that is..."

Legolas nodded lightly to the invitation, then began to walk along side Athena as they spoke. He noted the smile she had, and he couldn't help but smile in return. Outside of battle, she seemed to be quite pleasant to have around. Though, he was a bit curios as to why Thor wasn't around right now.
"Ah yes, I understand what you mean. While nature seems to be in balance now, there's no telling if any darkness looms about still. I myself, have been making sure to keep my shots true and my knives sharp."
There was a bit of an ominous tone to his voice, but he shook his head.
"Hopefully there will not be a time again where I must draw my bow against a living being that isn't prey. Too many lives were lost and ruined with that last incident I believe."

Athena nodded in agreement, "It is a scary thing... to think that something evil could still be out there. I had hoped the forest would be a safe place as my parents told me it would be, but I guess every place is cursed with its own troubles. But, then again, if there is no adversary to overcome, where would be the source of a societies drive to improve...?"
At last they arrived at the tree and Athena stepped forward, examining her target. The arrow did not look too deep, and Athena thought that maybe, just maybe, she could get it out. Holding onto the neck of the shaft, Athena gave the arrow a good twist and a tug, and with a soft grunt of effort, the arrow came free. Athena smiled and held the arrow head up to the light too see if it was still in usable conditions. Finding that the edges had not been malformed and nothing had broken off, the female archer was glad that she didn't have to replace any more of her arrows that day. She turned back to Legolas while gently slipping the arrow back into its holder on her back and continued, "As for the lives lost... that is something that I think is most unfortunate. I still feel sick whenever I remember the bodies of puppies and adults a like, that I came upon almost weeks after the incident. It was a dreadful occurrence..."

Legolas gave a rather solemn nod as Athena spoke of the many dead that were found once the horror of Biade had passed. He himself had buried a number of bodies or said a silent word or two for those that did not make it through that dark time.
"I know what you mean... Without darkness there can be no light. It's an unfortunate truth, but... it's the way things are."
Peering over her shoulder, he examined the arrow she had just retrieved, nodding lightly at its relatively good condition. It was always nice to be able to reuse arrows. Though in his case, he normally didn't have to craft his own wooden arrows so much any more, since he had his powers.
"How is your shot now anyway?"

Athena smiled and nodded at Legolas's reply, he really was a pleasantly intellectual dragonfly! "You are very wise Legolas... and your words are true. It amuses me though, that it doesn't go both ways though... We can not have light without darkness, but we can certainly have darkness without light..." Athena paused and ran her finger across her bow, deep in thought for only a moment.
"As for my shot, I believe it is more than decent. But I am only huma... an adult in stature..." Athena blushed slightly at her blunder. She had hoped to become a full dragonfly when she came to the forest, but old habits died hard. Sometimes she would still consider herself human, even though she knew she definitely was not. Athena continued as if nothing happened, "I hit my target, as you have seen, with great accuracy, but I do make mistakes every once in a while... it happens, though I do not like to admit it..." Athena chuckled and winked at Legolas playfully. She then sobered slightly and replied, "And what of your shot...?"

Nodding solemnly at what Athena had to say, Legolas let out a small sigh before placing a hand on the nearby tree and gazing up through its branches. It was rather unfortunate, but it simply meant they must do what they can to ensure light remained in the world.
When she mentioned her accuracy, he gazed at her curiosly as she nearly called herself a human. It made him wonder if she had been to the human's side before, and if so, how long she remained there. Depending on the length of time, it may explain a few oddities in her way of speech. Having never been around humans himself, he couldn't be certain of how their mannerisms were exactly.
"Even the gods will miss from time to time too I believe" he said with a light grin, "As for my own... I have many years of practice. But even then, I still find myself to fire a few strays. More often than not, however, my arrow flies true."

Athena blinked gratefully at Legolas. She knew he probably wondered about her blunder, but he did not press her about it, and for that she was grateful. Maybe, someday, she would be able to relive her memories of her times with the humans, but it was such a pleasant day, Athena didn't want to ruin it with her dreary stories. So Athena listened to Legolas and noticed that she felt comforted by his words, as though listening to a mentor who is consoling a student. She then began to wonder exactly how old Legolas truly was.
It did not matter to her much, age really, but she felt herself being wanting to know more about what his experiences in the forest were like. Athena mentally shook her head and sighed inwardly, now was not the time to be prodding the man for information. Instead she replied, "You sound very adept at archery my good man, would you care for... a small contest perhaps? I would love to see how I fair in a competition against one as experienced as you seem to be..." And I can get to know him a bit better too... that would be a nice perk.... Athena smiled inwardly while keeping her face in a pleasantly schooled expression.

Taking his hand away from the tree, Legolas lightly clasped them behind his back as he turned towards Athena. As she mentioned a friendly contest of sorts, his blue eyes lit up with curiosity and intrigue. Having such a contest was something he had not been able to do in ages, and he was rather interested in seeing how well her aim was.
"Hm? A competition sounds quite nice I have to say. We'll have to see if my age isn't a hindrance on me at all," he said with a fair smile, "How shall we go about with this contest? Set up a number of targets and see who can hit them all with the most speed and accuracy? That way, not only is it a race, but a test of skill and accuracy."
It was the first thing that came to mind. Of course, this would mean that he would have to use his crafted arrows rather than the ones he creates out of air, but that would put them on more even grounds anyway.

Athena's face lit up with joy, He agreed! This will be so much fun! Ever since she came to the forest, Athena hadn't been very good at making friends and mostly just stuck close to her brother. But now that Thor had gone off on his own, Athena really had to start making an attempt in getting to know other more! And how wonderful it was, that the first dragonfly she encountered, was Legolas! A great man all in all...
Athena curtsied and laughed, "Oh that sounds wonderful! How would you like to set up said targets?" Athena paused for a moment and then continued, "And at the end, how about we go for a moving target. That way..." She giggled and continued, "We can settle down and eat after such a great race!"

With a soft smile, Legolas thought of how the targets may be set up. After a moment or so, he replied with his answer.
"Hm... it seems that berry juice will be enough, granted we can find at least one or two berries per target... As for our final target..." he started, liking what she had suggested, "That sounds quite wonderful. Once we're there, one of us will call out the first deer we spot, and that will be the final one."
He thought over what he just said to see if he had forgotten anything, but just nodded from there.
"Does that sounds right?"

Athena nodded and worked on their idea, "Sounds fine to me! Ok... so... How about... 10 targets. Black berry juice can be used for the bulls eye, and a red coloring can make the general circle of the target. Bulls eye is two points, rest of the target is one. A miss is no points. Possibility of 20 points... The dragonfly that gets done first gets an extra 5 points added to their final score. That way we have to shoot for accuracy AND speed..." She smiled triumphantly, hoping this was a good scoring method.
Athena reached to her belt purse and removed two small deerskin bags from around her waist. One was held closed with a red string, the other with a black one. She held them up and continued, "I use berries mashed along with some common found plants to make a sort of chalky paint. This is what I usually use for my targets..." Athena trailed off, hoping she wasn't being impudent....
