Any ideas. We are going to have a MINIMUM of thirty gallons. We want real plants....and I am trying hard not to be biased to livebearers.

Both plants and fish. All I know, is if we do livebearers, I want a ground cover plant, and some java moss.

I'd recommend adding peet moss as a base layer when you start the tank.

I don't have any recomendation on which plants or which fish (though best no ciclids or goldfish) but please do give the plants a 'pot' and some soil. Personally I use pond soil. But check if the ingredients match up to the needs of the plants you are planning to plant. Also remember that most pond soil contains turf and other substances which softens the water. So if you plan on keeping fish who prefer a higher ph you might have to solve this. Personally I find adding some material made of chalk or lime, like a seashell or a piece of coral works nicely. To pot the plants I wrap them and their soil in lilttle bags made of old pantyhoses. It protects the roots while the plants don't choke.
If I'm doing anthing wrong here people, please tell me, since I'm still just experimenting with plants.
