The black and purple mare walked silently through the woods, content to be by herself again. Duskai knew that this was how it was supposed to be, her alone, with no one to hear her speak. The foals from her youth had ingrained it in her mind long ago. What came out of her mouth was not to be heard by anyone, and if it was, it was fit only to be laughed at or yelled at. Duskai was slowly changing that, having come here and meeting some nice Soquili who actually wanted to talk to her. It wasn't exactly easy though...

The excited tremble of hooves rushing through the forest shattered whatever peace it held, stirring resting birds' rest and crushing the twigs and leaves into a grounded mess. The owner to these cloven hooves was none other than a young unicorn by the name of Taigi. He'd just slipped away from his father and two brothers to go out and explore once again.
His heart fluttered with excitement, there was something special about this day, he just knew it. And he knew just as well that with this feeling usually came a new encounter. The colt's exhilarated pace finally slowed as he neared an object, or being, of curiosity: a shape of purple and white which seemed to give off a luminescent glow of its own. "Hello?" He knew best by now to let his presence be known before coming too close. This would tell him a little of the other's ethical alignment as well as their mood at the moment.

The mare had heard the footsteps, and tensed, thinking it was a mare or stallion she knew. However, the footsteps were too soft and too quick for Bella or Kai. Duskai looked around in a bit of a panic, until her grey eyes fell on a tiny black foal with green eyes. At first, her fear grew, but Duskai realized that she was older than the foal, older and bigger.
This didn't stop her from being cautious about him, but it did loosen her up ever so slighlty. "H-hel-lo..." she replied back in greeting.

It was a mare. From her response, he could see that she was either doing something private, something she didn't want found out, or she was very timid. After her stammered response, however, he was leaning more towards the latter option.
"Hello," he repeated himself, but this time his greeting was more formal rather than a wary inquisition, "how might you be today, miss?" This left him wondering whether or not he was much too probing, but since the words were out, he was also left to wonder until she replied. He was afraid he'd scare her off, even though this should be impossible, seeing that she was older, but the thought gnawed at him. He even took the extra measure of shaking his head ever so slightly to cover his horn with his bangs.

Duskai walked a few steps out from the cover of her tree, before replying. "I am... fine. You are... a unicorn... aren't you... little one?" she said slowly, thinking over every word she said. There didn't seem to be anything offensive in the words. She'd noticed the horn as he tried to cover it up. The mare was curious, though still cautious, of the foal. She only heard of unicorns from other Soquili, when she dared to get close enough to hear their conversations. This was a first in her book, seeing an actual unicorn, even it was just a foal.

Taigi couldn't help but give off a slight sigh when she chose to come a little closer, even though he still thought it silly that she might run off. The markings crawling up her front legs interested him beyond all else, their glowing appearance filling him with awe. She was most definitely shy, even though he could see no reason as to why, but her voice was soft and unsure. Her words crawled from her mouth slower than the laziest of slugs, as if she was afraid to let them go.
"Yes, miss, I am a unicorn." He gave the mare a reassuring smile and cocked his head. Taigi was curious about several things, but thought it better to hold the questions in. For a while, at least.

Duskai almost wanted to hit herself in the head with her tail. That seemed like such a duhhuh! thing to ask, now that the foal had replied to her. She was not cut out for talking to others, that much was sure. The mare decided to introduce herself, before all conversation died.
"I am Duskai... who... who are you... little one?" she asked, shyly, concentrating hard on her words. It was better to think before speaking, than the other way around, in her mind. It was like this to such a high degree, that Duskai took forever to speak, carefully checking her words over. She saw no other way, however, because this way, she was lible to not get yelled at or scolded.

Taigi shifted his weight from one side to the other. He wasn't used to such "long-distance" conversations, usually being much closer to the one he was speaking to. At the same time, he didn't want to invade this fascinating mare's "personal bubble". He decided to take a few steps closer, keeping distant at the same time.
Tai smiled again when the mare asked him for his name. And, for neither the first nor last time in his life, he made the mistake of giving his name to an unfamiliar, older Soquili. "I'm Taigi, miss Duskai!" Well, since she asked a question, he was allowed one in return, was he not? "Miss, are those markings on your legs really glowing?"

Duskai blinked and looked down at her legs, her white mane pooling on the ground. "I suppose so... They have... always... glowed like that..." she said to him. She was quite confused on the nature of how they glowed as well, but usually just passed it off as a trait from a mother she didn't remember. She did not dislike them, but wasn't very enthusiasic either. They were like a beacon for anyone who wished to find her. No amount of mud hid the white markings. Since then, however, she'd let them show; no one seemed to come at her in malintent yet so there didn't seem to be any reason to hide them.
Yet.

He gave her a big smile, hoping that it was encouraging. Perhaps if he regarded her in such a way, not that it was artificial, she might have more to tell him. "They're very beautiful!" And that they were, their glow mesmerizing and calming, a warm campfire in the midst of a frozen desert.
Taigi frowned, though not physically, upon her manner of speaking. It didn't bother him as she shyly distributed the words, no. But the fact remained that something must've happened, somewhere in her deepest past, to have her talk as if she was afraid of someone scrutinizing her voice. "Well, miss, at least you can live knowing that there will always be a part of you that'll remain light and independant!"

Duskai blinked at the foal. It was odd to hear such encouragement from a foal. She blushed a little when he said her leg markings were very beautiful. She blushed even more and mumbled a thank you, at his next words. For some reason, though, she had an instinct to nuzzle him, and did so rather cautiously.
"Taigi... Thank you... You are... different... from other foals..." she said, trying to surpress a shudder through her body.

Taigi chortled lightly at her nuzzling, leaning into it, and continued so as she spoke, though not in ridicule. When she shuddered, he finally took those few last steps to touch her, and thinking her shivering from the cold, leaned into her body. "Why, we're all different from the next, miss!"
Everyone was different in this strange and exciting world. Everyone had their tale to tell, their actions separating their personalities from one another. That is what made the colt so eager to find all of this information, it made the world beautiful, flourishing. Sure, these thoughts could have been strange when within a youngling's mind, but Taigi thought them freely and proudly.

Duskai smiled sadly at him with a small chuckle of sadness. "That may... be true... but sometimes... Soquili are... all very much... alike. They all... can be very.... mean and vicious..." she said to him softly, telling him as much of her past as she was willing to tell anyone, esspecially since he was just a young colt.
Everyone was different, yes, but not everyone acted different. Sometimes, Soquili banded together, and acted the same as their leader. Like they had. Like everyone had...

The colt gazed up at her with those bright green eyes of his, searching. He said nothing, for the mare's last statement bore a depression upon his young mind. There was much more behind those few, soft words, he was sure of it. But never would he pry this mare, not on this topic.
"Miss.." His voice cracked, just a little, and he swallowed the dryness of his throat and continued, "there are Soquili that are alike. But alike and same are words that are very different."

Duskai nodded silently and stepped back from him. She wanted to be alone now, even though alone would mean she could dwell on the past. She hung her head a little, hiding grey eyes behind white hair.
"I know... Taigi... shouldn't you... be getting back... to your... family?" her voice broke a bit, and she turned. Instantly, she disappeared into the trees, the only thing left was a bit of white tail before it too disappeared. She left the foal there to take it as he would.
Her hooves pounded the ground and she ran as far, and as fast as she could. From what, she knew. She knew it all too well.
Her past.
