The pale light of the moon shone down on the planet. It reflected off of the snow and frost covered ground and also off of the deep red surface of the stallion's eyes. It was nights like these, where the moon was full and bright that he liked the best. Nights where it was both light and dark where he could remain hidden mostly through the entire night. Ordinarily his white patches would give him away in the dark or his dark coat would reveal him in the light.
Not this night though.
He lowered his head away from the moon and shook himself lightly. The air cut through his winter coat like needles but the pain did not truly bother him. He had business tonight as he did once every moon cycle when he could best hide.
With a flick of his silky, yet messy tail he set off his hooves cutting patterns into the chilled ground bellow him. Tonight he needed to patrol the area to make sure none of his 'father's' friends had snuck in to his home. He didn't need any more problems then he already had.

The soft tinkling sound of the wood and stone charms against the silver chain was a sharp contrast to the sharp audio results of hooves shattering the smooth surface of virgin snow. In silence the pale mare suffered and fumed, her dislike of the cold growing old and tired in the winter weather. Though she loathed it, there was no easy path to warmer climates save the desert to the far north. But going north meant risking an unwanted reunion with her old herd, and that was an even worse scenario than even freezing to death here in the south.
The near constant shivering wasn't really helping her case though.
Brown eyes lay lazily upon the bright moon above, lids slipping lower despite her continued subdued pace. In the darkness her coloring stood out, light yet not white enough to blend into the scenery - socks not dark enough to fade into the blackness but stood out perfectly against the snow. Wind-blown mane lay haphazardly about her face and neck, her movements causing some of the lighter strands to twirl behind her as if stretching for life, her tail in a similar weakly distraught state. So she was a mess - it mattered little in a place like this.
Once she might have been cursing her luck for such an appearance, but back then she had someone to look good for. Now? Like her new herdmates cared. She rather liked that though. Constantly bathing herself in the frozen rivers was not something she especially smiled upon, after all.
Her breath puffed from her muzzle, distracting her from her muted thoughts. It was perhaps the only reason she heard the sound of hooves against rock - or rather, solid soil. Her ears twitched in the direction of the oncoming creature, body tense as she brought herself along side a tree. Though she'd never met a Kalona or Skinwalker, between the equines she'd met so far and the stories the two-leggers spoke of, the presence of an unknown being was yet another addition to her "do not like" list.
Perhaps whatever it was wouldn't notice her, half-hidden by the mass of the trunk as she was. Perhaps she would simply vanish into the wood so far as their eyes could see, making her yet another addition to the still life and they would pass her by without a glance. That would be the most convenient, a though she willed to whatever forces might be at work in this world.

His breath clouded in front of him as he moved throughout the forest. His ears twitched and swiveled listening for any and every sound. The beating of a birds wings turned his eyes to the tree tops and the scuffling of some burrowing rodent brought his eyes back to the ground. Every noise put him on alert because any noise could belong to unwanted company.
The further he went the fewer sounds he heard and he began to relax just slightly. His eyes settled to watch the ground rather then the skies; a winged beast he would hear before it could strike while anything on the ground could hide away. The thought of something hiding put him on full alert once again and he turned about quickly to check his rear. He could see only his own tracks. He let out a small sigh and returned to the task at hand. This life he lived could very well mean the end of his mental state but if he was not this careful it would likely mean the end of him.
After barely a moment had passed he froze taking in a sharp breath. There were tracks in front of him, carved into the snow. It had been several months since he had actually found anything on one of his patrols and it was safe to say he had not been expecting any company tonight.
Taking a moment he pulled himself together and let his eyes follow the trail. It headed behind a tree and somehow the whole situation screamed 'ambush'. He lowered his head, preparing to attack and slowly approached the tree. As he came closer he could hear the breath of someone and he let a sound similar to a growl escape his throat. "Come out, now!" He ordered fully ready to charge around and kill whatever was hiding if they did not comply.
He could not take any risks. If this was an enemy they needed to be dealt with immediatly.

Her heart pounded despite herself as the hoof-beats drew nearer, willing the being to just. Keep. Walking.
But no. They stopped. What's worse? They growled. And her heart nearly exploded in how fear gripped her. Her stubborn nature clashed then with a few opposing views. Perhaps she just stayed there? Better yet, ran? ...and if it was a Skinwalker or Kalona? She'd be killed.
...and if she walked out and it was still one of them? Dead either way.
Closing her eyes to regain her composure, she took a breath to still herself, though her pulse was still racing. She at least owed it to herself to face the foe head-on, didn't she?
Steadily -she was rather proud of herself for not shaking like a twig- she made her way out into the open, dark eyes hard as she took in the threatening figure. A shock went through her two-fold.
First, he was young, and second... he was as defenseless as she! Not a claw or fang on him! Her shock softened her features into that of confusion. "What... do you want?" she finally kicked out, bewildered as to why he would act so hostile. She didn't smell of a killer, did she? Perhaps hiding hadn't been the smartest move, but still... she backed up a step, suddenly wanting the protection of her tree. "Are these your lands? I'll leave if it's a problem..."
Seriously? What did she do? Her body grew tense as she stood there, though now she wondered if it was more from the cold rather than the stallion. Or a mix of both... maybe... possibly...
See. This was why she hated the cold! Screwed everything up.

He took a step backwards as he heard movement from behind the tree. He hadn't truly expected anyone to emerge so cooperatively. Somehow he got the feeling he was being mocked by their compliance but at the first look of the one hiding he came to the conclusion that this wasn't an ambush. That or the dark haired one in front of him was the bait. He didn't recognize her as any mare his 'father' kept in his company. She looked rather useless honestly, not the type to be associated with that man.
He raised his head as she finally spoke a look of irritation written clearly over his face. He couldn't judge based on her appearance alone, just because she didn't look familiar or seem the type didn't mean she couldn't be. Although, he simply couldn't imagine someone speaking like that around his father and living. It was either an act or she was stupid and didn't know where she had wandered to.
"I want to know who you are and why you are out here." He said studying her with narrowed eyes. No matter what way he looked at it he couldn't see her being anything more then a fool. "These lands may not be mine but it would be best if you left. This isn't a place a girl wants to be." This was the only warning she would get, friendly or not, it would all end the same. The only ones he would let be around were those involved with his mother because there he had no choice.
