It was winter.
Or it felt close enough to be called it. Haya's breath steamed out around his nostrils when he exhaled and he felt the prickle of the cold air inside is throat when he breathed in. His serpentine tail was uncustomarily still, resting on the ground behind him.
His children... One, Adour, he had lost. If the fire hadn't killed her then Mapiya's raising of her had turned her wild enough to never come back... or maybe it was his own actions that had done that. He remembered the last time he saw her. She had had blood on her muzzle then, fresh from the kill she had made.
Though he had never told Ayanna, he had seen Samsara with that same red stain one day. He had never suspected her of being capable of giving in to the kalona urges but it seemed like she had succumbed just the same. He wasn't certain about Auberon... perhaps he was the only one of their children that hadn't tasted blood. Regardless of that, however, it had been Haya's own blood that had tainted their children.
It was his blood that had changed loving foals into monsters.
He grimaced with the pain of this realization and then started forward. He rounded the final bend in the path to where he knew that Ayanna was. He had to talk to her... about the kalona blood in their children, and about what the path before them might be.

Nothing seemed the same.
The glade where she and Haya raised two of their foals was just different now that the said foals were now adults and off doing their own thing. She hasn't seen her beloved daughters; Adour, who went off with a mare Haya know and Samsara, in some time now. Auberon was a different story. When he was a foal, she was always chasing him around, but even now as an adult, she still seemed to have to keep him from jumping off of something.
Because of this, Ayanna found herself often escaping from her teepee to the comfort of the glade, but nothing was comforting anymore. Everything just reminded her of the things they had before, when her children were still young and still with her. A soft nicker escaped her as she walked to the tree that she used to lay under and looked up into the branches, sighing softly.

Haya caught a glimpse of white shining through the bare branches of winter. There she was. He hesitated for a moment before showing himself to her. It was painful to think about and would be even more painful to talk about... but it was something that had to be done.
No, it was something that should have been done before we bred the first time.
That was the thought that pushed him into the open. "Ayanna," he started before seeing the look on her face. Something was bothering her too. Was it the same thing as haunted him? There was only one way to find out.
"Ayanna," he started again. "We... we need to talk... about our children... and things." He looked away. It had never been easy for Haya to talk about the more sensitive issues in his life. This one being especially sensitive, not to mention a source of much bitterness, would be especially difficult.
Why didn't we talk about this sooner? His mental tone was full of disdain for his own situation. His blood, his fault. All their problems traced back to him.

The small mare shook her head softly, letting out a soft nicker. Seeing something move in the corner of her eyes, she lifted her head and looked to it. Upon seeing who it was, her eyes widened slightly before calming and giving a small smile, happy to see one thing that was familiar to her. With a flick of her tail, she turned and started walking to the new arrival, the stallion she knew as Haya.
As she got closer, she could tell that there was something bothering him. Ayanna tilted her head slightly as she walked even closer to him. She stopped not too far from him and watched him carefully. At what he said, her frown returned. "Yes... I know." She replied softly, ears flattening at the thought.

Haya hesitated again. It was so easy to form the words in his mind but not so easy to say them aloud. He wondered if Ayanna would be angry. He wondered if she would be frightened. Was she already frightened of him and his tainted blood? Of what his blood had done to their offspring? There was no way of knowing... except through this talk.
"Ayanna... I'm worried about our children. That because they're part kalona they won't be happy in their lives." All of a sudden the words came swiftly, spilling from his lips. "That they'll have to carry with them the burden of my blood... "
He spoke again, softer. "I'm worried that if we wanted to have any more children that they would have the same problem." There. He had said it. He had never known whether their relationship would continue past the one coupling and now he would find out.

She waited patiently for him to speak what was on his mind, though she had a small idea of what it could be. She slowly walked up to him and gave his shoulder a comforting nudge with hers.
When Haya brought up their children, she frowned softly and looked away. She hadn't had many interactions with her daughters, especially the one that was ... unfortunately, given to another mare to care for. Auberon, well... she felt bad that she never gave him the attention he needed.
She looked to him when he mentioned them having to carry the burden of his blood. She didn't know how her daughters took to being partially kalona, but Auberon didn't seem to be affected by it, but she could be wrong.
The thought of having more children with him had never crossed her mind, but even if it had, she never worried about the possibility of the newer foals having the same problems. She sighed softly, but didn't say anything for a moment. "Haya... yes, it's a shame that our current children turned out the way they did, but if we keep worrying about the possibility of them turning out that way we would never have foals in the first place. Life is about taking risks." She said softly, before adding, "and maybe we are at fault... perhaps we should have told them about kalonas instead of hiding the fact from them."
[I'm not sure if Haya told Samsara about Kalonas or not. I just figured that he didn't. I hope you don't mind.]
