As anyone who is a regular (or previously regular) Yu Yu Hakusho fanfiction reader will tell you, fanfics are often not at all accurate when it comes to characterization. Fanfictions authors sometimes make many errors when it comes to keeping our beloved characters in character, and while that's forgivable, following along with the fanon (instead of the canon, which is the actual series) really isn't.

So, in preparation for a fanfiction I'm writing (a parody piece inspired by Those Lacking Spines, which is an AMAZING Kingdom Hearts fanfiction that can be found on fanfiction.net) I wanted to know what your biggest YYH character OOC pet peeves are.

Mine are pretty much making Kurama act stupider than he is (which is mildly forgivable but easy to do...) and making Hiei an ice-cream obsessed moody a*****e. What about you guys?

Yeah, I love to read satires too, but I hate it when stuff like this gets into serious fanfics, because I literally cannot read it anymore. (I'm really picky about what I read, though.)
I have NEVER understood the sweet snow thing. NEVER. I agree that it's hilarious in crack fics, but in serious stories, it just doesn't make sense to me. Which is why I am going to beat the hell out of it in my satire. XD
I TOTALLY agree with the Kuwabara bashing. It's ridiculous. In most stories, he's either too stupid to string together five coherent words, or he's cut out altogether. I feel so bad for him.
I always laugh and then curse whenever I see someone writing:

They make him sound like he has schizophrenia. I've never heard the shiny cliché before, thankfully. That's just dumb.
I think I tend to keep him from transforming unless he's in a dire fight. I know that he made the vow, but I can't remember what the specific terms of his decision were, and whether he would do it to save Yusuke's life, for instance. Also, that's kind of excusable in a divergence fic or one that takes place before the Makai Tourny, which I know a lot of fics do. Otherwise, yeah, it pretty much turns everything Kurama learned in the Makai Tournament into:
"OMFG I WUB YOU YOMI" and "I am going back on my promise to myself for NO APPARENT REASON, or just so I can bang this chick."
'cause we all know Shuichi can't have sex. That's another OOC cliché I see a lot; Kurama will only mess around with the MC if he's in his other form. Which is just stupid.
I agree that Yusuke is usually misconstrued as being too calloused. Then again, I've also seen him be WAY too emotional, to the point where it's kinda pathetic. And yeah, Hiei is pretty much the easiest one to screw over, because he's so stoic and yet not a total statue. Ironically, I find in my work that he doesn't talk ENOUGH, rather than talking too much. I think I've gone full chapters of a HieiXMC story without him saying much other than one or two syllables.
Oh, another thing I hate is when he says "hn" all the time. I know it's his trademark or whatever, but he doesn't say it EVERY. FRICKIN'. LINE. It's really annoying to see a story deteriorate to this:
"Hiei? Do you love me?"
"Hn."
"What do you want for dinner?"
"Hn."
"How's the athlete's foot coming?"
"Hn."

Anyway, thank you for your response; you gave me at least two or three good ideas for this story. ^^

What I can't stand is when everyone cuts out Kuwabara and Yusuke and go insane for Hiei and Kurama. It bugs the hell out of me! It's like, c'mon people, if you're going to write a REAL story, do you really think anti-social Hiei's going to talk more than buoyant Yusuke? Seriously! XD

Another thing I hate is when they make the OC beat up the guys. It's like, do you REALLY think the guy's are just going to sit there while you b***h around to them. XD

*sigh* Poor little confused fanwriters...

Oh man, OOC Pet Peeves? I am not sure I would have room to list them all. rofl

There are generally a lot of things that bother me about Yu Yu Hakusho fanfiction... it's partially why I write my own. Of course even then I get angry at my own writing because I will find something OOC about it and take it down for months at a time to fix it. Yes, yes I AM a perfectionist, I like it and I won't change it.

It has been stated before but the "sweet snow" thing drives me up the wall bonkers! It's come to the point where I don't even find it funny in a crack fic, I just freakin' hate it! If I could find the being that started it I WOULD end them, no questions asked. Of course the sweet snow thing ties in to Hiei having a sweet tooth in general half the time, which melts into writers making Hiei childish and demanding in general. Half of the time I see fictions where Hiei won't go on a mission or do anything for anyone (usually Kurama) with out a little prompting or bribing with some treat of some kind. Now, I know Hiei is not the most co-operative little demon but he knows what the hell will earn his freedom, so normally he'll suck it up and get the job done so he can be one step closer to "home" so-to-speak.

Something else that has been mentioned of course is vocabulary. Oh how many times have I stumbled across a fanfic where Hiei's favourite phrase is little more than a two lettered grunt... "hn". Someone please shoot me in the head when I see that. Now, granted, yes Hiei DOES utter that every once in a while in the series HOWEVER I am pretty sure I have seen him string together a sentence or two, ne even a whole paragraph or monologue! *Gasp* guess what writter's, he's not a mute, and he DOES know how to talk.

People have already read my rants on the, Youko speaking in Shuichi's head thing. So I won't bother beating a dead horse there. Besides for that I do mainly blame Funimation, that was there one little dub-flub as I deem it. Just know that it is one of the most loathesome of my peeves and I could go on for PAGES about it.

As for the Kuwabara bashing... Man, this is going to get kind of complicated. First off, I HATE it when they bash him for no reason or really go over board with characters laying into him. Because while some characters do make a few cracks at his expence, it normally is in harmless fun and not overly malicious. When it comes to his intelligence though... I used to defend Kuwabara's intelligence with a vengence, I still do, but not really as hard as I once did. The thing is, in the anime, he's not the brightest crayon in the box in the true Japanese track. There is a scene in the Chapter Black Saga, of the Saga or the Three Kings (the official source escapes me now) where he's doing his home work in his room. In this scene he's working on math, and in the English version he gets his answer and says "Of course! A squared plus B squared equals C squared!" In the Japanese track it's somewhere along the lines of "Yes! 2x2=8!" Also keep in mind that when in middle school Kuwabara scored low on his Physical Science exams too. Togashi wrote out Kuwabara's character to be a little on the dim side it would seem. Granted he does get more intelligent and does make it into college with Kurama's tutoring, as seen in the manga, but he's more like the big loveable "dumb" guy. What makes me angry is when fans blow that out of proportion and turn Kuwabara into some large drooling idiot. It's fine if you want to make him a little dim, but loveable and good hearted all the same, but it's another to make him dim, a terrible person, and have everyone and his mother point that out and rip into him.

Heh, that was long winded and maybe painful for some, but I felt the need to try to explain it as best I could. At any rate, those are the top OOC Peeves that REALLY rattle my chain. If I can remember more later, I shall post them.

*Cackles* When I first saw the beginning of your comments I was like, "Oh man, I'm boned!" I write about Kuronue every once in a while. However, I must admit that I have many of the same peeves you do when it comes to writing in his personality.

I am picky about how I write out Kuronue, and I believe I have left my own rantings on fans "bashing" him in fics as it were by making him stupid or Youko's little "Damsel in Distress" for him to save. I could be wrong, but wasn't the distress thing Yomi's bit? rolleyes At any rate, I like to take a completely differnt spin with him, I put him on an equal playing field with Youko, in fact, in the beginning of one of my fanfics, he is SUPERIOR to Youko in his skills and techniques when it comes to the art of theivery. Heck in the first chapter of my fic he has the audacity to steal from the great "King of Thieves." When Youko confronts him he is arrogant and very unpleasant, even sneering in his face that he's not as "great as he claims." Later in the story I do have the two run into each other on a heist, one that is so messy they have no choice but to help each other or both die. Although that part will eventually tie into Youko's personality because obviously, I make them live. After in which, they DO become partners and friends... albeit somewhat begrudgingly at first.

Now, I know that in and of itself might peeve people out, because I am giving Kuronue his own personality and leveling him up to what I want him to be and what I think he could have been, but my simple explaination was that I did it as stark contradiction to all the of the peeves I had about him in fanfiction. I was sick of seeing stupid little fan brats who claimed to be fans of Kuronue smearing him with perversion or stupidity in their fanfiction. I swear, they DID get their lines crossed with Yomi and Kuronue, because I have a feeling that Kuronue came before Yomi(IF we were to go by any semblance of "partner timeline) and Youko would never make the same mistake twice. If most can't already tell, Kuronue is my favourite Yu Yu Hakusho character, even if he isn't Togashi's(even though I have not heard of this before) and even if he only does appears AS HIS REAL SELF for all of five seconds. There's just something I like about him, so I get really peeved off when people use him as some kind of warped comic relief -_-.

Oh, and thank you for the compliment on my signature redface (we need a better blushing icon!) It was really sweet.

I can't tell you how hard I was laughing...until we got to the Kuwa bashing. Then I wanted to cry. He is such a sweet and lovable character. Most people compare him to the other guys instead of looking at him as an individual. "Oh, he's not as strong as Yusuke." "Oh, he's not as bad-a** as Hiei." "Oh, his hair isn't as silky smooth as Kurama's." Plus, he is such a romantic. You don't see that with very many male characters. I mean, the love at first sight thing with Yukina and Botan was a little out there since I really don't believe in it myself, but I would think that's normal for a 14 year old. I chew out Kuwa bashers and have them for breakfast.

I rofled so hard at the pervy/klepto Youko. Especially when Snow-chan said "TAAAAKKKEEEE IIIIIITTTTT!" Pervy Youko I am okay with to an extent. Klepto Youko I can't. Neither is the inner thoughts of Shuichi and Youko. Some are just hilarious and I read them ONLY for crack fics. It kills my buzz in a serious fic.

Ah yes...the sweet snow...I am starting to get sick of them in crack fics as well because I see it too much in serious fics. For example: for those of you that know me well enough, I love me a good mpreg. Was reading one of the best ones EVAR, though I only had two problems: making Kurama a chick (honestly, it kills the mpreg concept doing that) and Hiei's frikken ice cream obsession! Kurama has a craving really early in the morning...like...5 or 6 am...Hiei is forced to go to the market for pickles and chocolate. For the trouble he is caused going out when he was sleeping soundly is not only using Kurama's credit card without permission, but buying between 3 - 5 bags of ice cream! I don't mind Hiei liking sweets, but being so obsessed with them and using the awful 'sweet snow' term makes me shake the computer.

KURAMA'S EPIC 5TH DIMENSIONAL SUBSPACE! You only see that with schoolgirls that need to beat on the pervy main male character, most of which contain a hammer. Poking fun at the subspace is all good fun, just because it's fun to imagine, but in a serious fic is bad. Crack fics and comic relief only plzkthx

I know that I sound like a hypocrite having these issues with OOC when the fics I have are that way...but it's not absolutely horrible. I had three fics, one I axed due to too much OOC (even if amnesia was involved), so I still have two brewing. One with Hiei x Kurama and Yusuke x Kurama as the center pairing and the other being Kuwabara x Kurama, both mpreg fics. Because Kurama gets to play the role of 'mommy', of course he is a little OOC (yay hormones), but it's not totally blown out of the water like I have seen for mpregs.
In my current fic: Hiei is just a little friendlier. But *le gasp* HE EATS NORMALLY! Her prefers Kurama to cook, but he will eat nearly anything. In fact, I make him distain from sweets if he is given a choice. Kuwa-chan is still the cuddly person I see him as (I would seriously want someone like him for a husband), just a tad more helpful, supportive and also gets the role of playing peace-maker, but still there for a little comic relief when it is called for. Yusuke is a lot more protective of people and just a tinch more emotional, but he is still the way he normally is.
In my second fic: Surprise, surprise, for this one, Kuwa and Yusuke kinda switch roles in this fic. Hiei only has one big part, but then he just kinda...disappears, which is usually not the case in most fics. Yusuke slows his appearances as well, but is around a lot more often than Hiei.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that, with me, I only OOC characters for certain situations and I don't try to make them seem so bizzare. I make the OOC believeable because of the things that are happening to them.

Gah there are SO many pet peeves...My top one is when people make kuwabara a complete idiot without even considering his amazing character, they treat him as mearly second to Yusuke comedic relief.

It's hard not to OOC ANY anime character for that matter.

*blush* Aw, thank you very much. Well, I don't have them up anywhere, but the first one has a few chapters and the second is one that I will type out one of these days. I have a lot of fanart for them though, so people know what to expect.

Uber pervy Kuwa-chan makes me sick to my stomach. I mean, it's fine if he's poking fun at/with Yusuke, because he does that in the show. Like in my ficcy:


Kuwa: So, didja get laid yet, Urameshi? *goofy grin*
Yusuke: Kurama is *between 5-8* months pregnant, you nerd. What the hell do you think? *glare* Not like I would tell you anyway.
Kura: *pokes head into room* Of course you would! You've always been the type! Besides, Halloween was rather...adventurous...for the both of us, even if it wasn't all the way.
Kuwa: Oh HO!!! DO TELL!
Yusuke and Kura: NO!!!
Kuwa: Hey! I'm just yanking your guys' chain! Not like I need to know anyway.


Basically as long as he is doing it with friends and not being mean about it, it's fine, because it's in-character. Having him act like a perv to any of the girls just shatters his character.
