At first, it seems like the children are still at a halloween party. They are in a forest of dead trees that reach towards the sky with skeletal branches. (The sky, by the way, is starry but moonless. Its constellations are unknowable and unfamiliar.) The trees are strung with lights that are either many fireflies, or some larger blanketing beast that is the essence of fireflies.

A wind picks up. Over the children's heads flies a swarm of bats of every size and shape possible, both animal and human in form at once. They seem to be beckoning the children forwards.

As they walk, the path widens. The dim glow of the fireflies extends into the mouth of a huge cave.

THUNK!

Riddik slowly opened his eyes and all he could see was total darkness. At first he began to think that he was still back at the party and that night came pretty quickly, but then he realized that Kyo wasn't there.
"Hello?"

Riddik slowly pushed himself up off the ground and looked around once again and saw that there were other children here with him, none of them he had never meet before.

"Where are we?" Riddik called out and hopped that one of them would know. He then looked down and saw that something was different. He wasn't wearing any clothes and he wasn't on two feet like he was before. Instead he was on all four, but the weights still remained on his front paws. His jaw also felt different, he clamped down and felt more teeth then he did before. All of a sudden he began to feel a surge of fright.

" Ow" Owen muttered, having been flat out on his stomach upon entering Eden had landed the same way causing several of the camera's he landed upon to dig into his body. As he rose to his feet Owen could see several pieces of plastic that had broken off, having been snapped off the toy cameras by his weight. Though it was only when he reached out to grab his dislodged hat that Owen realized he had a much bigger problem.

Fur much that same as the stuff covering his ears and tail had spread across his body and when he reached out to examine himself Owen could find no patch of his former skin unchanged.

Riddik's voice a few feet away temporarily distracted Owen as he walked towards the other boy. It was his fault, Owen's fault that they'd fallen into that stupid pool and wound up here. " I don't know." He admittedly softly.

Something very strange was going on. This wasn't right. It wasn't normal. Belle paid little attention to the pair of boys confused boys nearby. All of her attention was utterly consumed by the state of her surroundings. The trees- they were sick. She gasped, green eyes wide with horror, and spun carefully on the spot. She had seen many a dead plant before, as Green really wasn't very good at watering them, but this -the extent of the waste- was unnatural. The lights that dazzled from the lifeless branches were eerie and sent chills up her little, delicate spine. She couldn't possibly guess at the source, but Belle knew that it must not be right. Who had put them there? Was that same person, or thing, also responsible for murdering the trees?

...what would happen if it came back? Would it kill her, as well?

The flower child swallowed audibly and, suddenly frightened by the idea of being alone, made her way towards Owen and Riddik. Moving was more difficult than she remembered. Belle paused, uncertain, and glanced down at her toes. She blinked and her heart started beating a dozen times faster. Her feet- they weren't feet any longer. Instead, they'd been replaced by green things. They looked like stems, she thought; thick and sturdy stems. With every step she took, roots shot out from the base of her legs and attempted to attach themselves to the ground.

Oh, this was awful.

Riddik looked up at the rabbit looking man, "Who are you?" He tried to choke out as a flock of bats flew over head. He was getting more nervous about being out here more then normal.
I gotta be brave! I'm a bear...

Riddik then turned his head as noticed that they were not alone, another child was running up towards the two of them.
"Who's that one?"

The sound of the bats made Owen twitch his normally sensitive hearing that much stranger in this strange place. " I'm Owen" he replied slowly trying to settle his nerves " and that's Belle, she's.. aggressive." Yes that was the word Owen wanted, he remembered the other girl's power from when they'd met as small children a long time ago. Though at the moment he was bigger than her and she didn't look too dangerous, especially since she seemed to be in danger of getting rooted in the ground.

" Maybe" he began as Belle approached " Maybe we should follow the bats. they like caves and a cave is probably safer than standing here." Safer but more disgusting the older boy thought. The cave would probably be filled with bugs and bat poop and a host of other nasty things. Still, this forest was starting to unnerve him.

It wasn't all easy going. More than once, poor Belle had to stop and yank upwards on her scrawny knees in order to free her roots from the barren soil. After a series of long, labor filled strides the toddler finally found her place beside Owen, who was strangely familiar, and the polar bear boy. She listened quietly to their conversation and was careful not to stand still for too long; in case she happened to plant herself somewhere.

When Owen suggested that they wander into the caves, which were dark and mysterious and might play host to any number of things more terrifying than bats, Belle blanched. She stared at him as though he was crazy, placed her hands on her hips and announced with as much authority as she could muster;

"I want to go home."

To her, it seemed like the most logical course of action. Home meant being with Green and trick-or-treating. Who did that strange, angry lady from the magic pool think she was? How dare she ruin Belle's Halloween? There was no Bugs Bunny here- just deadness. It was beyond horrible.

"Oh..." Riddik looked down towards the ground and looked back up and watched as Belle wandered over, she looked like a flower from back home... and those are something that he shouldn't eat. His stomach began to grumble and growl lightly and only noticeable to himself, Riddik wanted to go home and enjoy a nice fish.

Riddik turned his head and followed the flock of bats to where they were flying off too, a cave huh? That didn't sound and more safe then being out here... what if there was something in that cave... like a monster?
"Are you sure about that," Riddik shook his little bear head, "what if there is a monster in there?"

Owen sighed and began backing towards the Cave anyways hoping the two younger children would be forced to follow. " If it rains, or snows or gets windy it's better inside something." he turned his eyes to stare hard at the two " We fell out of the sky from home and none of us can fly,We need to look for help and the others but we need a safe place to think first."

Monsters were not pleasant thought, still. " bats sleep upside down at the top of the cave a monster would just reach up and eat them if there was one and they wouldn't live there anymore." That made sense for the most part.

Belle watched skeptically as Owen drew nearer and nearer to the cave. She may not have been much older than a toddler, but she had managed to learn a couple of things in her short life. The cave was dark. It was impossible to tell what was inside it. The prospect of rain didn't bother her, but the possibility of snow made her uncomfortable. Flowers didn't fair well in the cold. She'd experienced frost before and hadn't liked it at all.

Still, she was not afraid enough of the snow to just clamber right up into that cave. It might not have been safe.

"Go look?" The dark skinned little girl gestured from Owen to the mouth of the cave. Until the rabbit went, scouted and then came back there was absolutely no way she was going to step foot (or stem, as it were) inside. Voluntarily.

Riddik stared up at Owen and questioned his way of thinking. Was it because he was older than him and more experienced or was it because he was a foolish rabbit who didn't believe in monsters... like the monster who hid in the closet or under the bed. Now those must have been real monster... right?

"I don't know," Riddik muttered and whispered, "It sure does look spooky. What if the monster doesn't like the taste of bats... maybe they taste like celery?" Just the sound of the word "Celery" made the polar bear boy squirm. "Now that's gross... although Kyo says I have to eat it."

Owen rolled his eyes and walked towards the cave " I'm not going to look I'm just going in. Even if there's a monster in there we're safer becuase there's more us" Owen was not the overly brave type but Eden brought out his animal instincts and the rabbit in him said a cave was much better option than being out in the open. " I'll protect you" he promised pausing to pick up a fallen dead branch that would make a reasonable club or spear if he had to use it as such " But I am going in" He certainly didn't like the idea of leaving the two younger children alone but his instincts urged him to fine safety and that simply wasn't going to happen if he argued with stubborn kids.

Stubborn might as well have been Belle's middle name. The Eden watched in disbelief, with her little hands still placed furiously on her hips, as the rabbit child picked up a branch and started towards the caves. She saw a bit of sense in his 'we probably outnumber the monster' logic, but, if truth be told- Belle didn't think a pair of toddlers and a rabbit with a makeshift club could frighten a monster. She didn't know what kind of monsters Owen thought might exist. But, Belle felt sure that if there was one, the odds were that it was bigger than ALL of them put together. Besides, who was to say that there wasn't more than one? It seemed likely, to her, at least, that monsters (especially little ones) would have families.

The flower child snorted derisively when he said that he'd protect them. It looked like he was determined to get them slaughtered. Still, she sighed, shook her and tugged sporadically on her knees in order to follow him. It was better to stay together, than to fall apart. Even she could see that.

Besdies, if there really was a monster, she supposed than she could always sacrifice Owen and the bear. Hopefully, then the monster's appetite would be appeased enough to allow her a reasonably easy escape. Hopefully.

Riddik wasn't very sure of Owen's choices in this current quest. He wasn't to sure of anything any more here. It was rather scary and he was only a little cub after all. For all Riddik knew, he couldn't protect himself...

"Well I'm not going to stay out here," Riddik nodded his bear like face and stared at Owen and then to the brance, "I'm going to come with you."

With everyone in agreement Owen lead his group out of the dead forest and into the mouth of the cave. He didn't know what lay ahead but he was ready for it or at least as ready as he could be.
