Rachel Pateko was almost positive at this point that he had to have lost his mind somewhere along the line, if he'd ever had it to begin with. He was looking at the file for the kid he'd be teaching that day. She was apparently gaining interesting hearing abilities and he was to have her attempt to hone them.
All Rachel had been able to think up to do with her was get a recording of a crowded area, with tons of people talking. What he hoped to have her do was pick out different things people were saying. He really had no clue what to do with half of these kids. And the girl's Mom was the other skills teacher! Talk about pressure!
Oi, now all he had to do was wait. Damn he was glad that his beanbag chair was comfy right about then. He could collapse in it and wait for doom.

Wynni had asked – no insisted – that Riulve at least escort her to the class she had to attend after she was looked over and a diagnosis was made as to what needed to be done for the hybrid girl. The had asked her mother several times why Riulve couldn’t just teach her the skills instead of some stranger and the tall woman never managed to give a satisfactory answer resulting in a very sulky little girl.
“Tell you what if you do well … We’ll go get your ears pierced afterward.” Riulve said with a small sigh at the girl walking in front of her. It was the only way the woman could think to make up for the apparent faux pas that she hadn’t intended upon stirring up with the girl. Riulve simply didn’t want risk being easy on the child because Wynni was her daughter and did she want to seem to show favoritism. To Riulve it had seemed quite unprofessional.
Wynni paused before the classroom before nodding a bit, “Okay! You stay out here, then!” she said suddenly cheerful once more and she trotted into the classroom with the odd clicks of her talons announcing her presence to the teacher present. The girl didn’t want or need her mother to lend support she just wanted to make the woman feel a little guilty. Wynni hadn’t counted on the act to work quite so well.

Rachel waved as the girl entered the room. "Hello there." he said calmly. "I'll take it that you're Wynni?"
Not like there'd be any other students coming to him at this point in the day. Unless one of the previous ones showed up unexpectedly but he highly doubted that any spawn would willingly come to this place without prompting.

Wynni raised up a hand and waved as her tail swished behind her. Her wings, as always hung at either side of her in a graceful sort of fashion. The girl didn't seem very shy as she simply waved, "Are you my teacher?" She asked curiously with a small tilt of her head.
She seemed almost restless, while she could stand still for a short time, sooner or later her taloned toes started tap against the ground ever so lightly in a random sort of rhythm.

"I should hope so. Otherwise we're both going to be highly confused." his voice was smooth, somewhat deadpan, particularly when telling jokes. At least he tried. "As I've been told, you've been having interesting hearing developments? I was hoping we could work on those a bit today."

The very tip of her tail twitched back and forth as she listened to the man before her before she nodded enthusiastically after giving a small polite giggle at his joke. It was kind of funny even if the delivery could be considered highly questionable and needed to be worked on.
“Kay! How we gonna do that?” She asked with a light tilt of her head.

"Eh, just play a recording of a crowded city. You're going to have to pick out what people are saying. I was really at a loss for what to do with you but this might work. I also have a recording of an orchestra and you can try to pick out how many different instruments you hear." Rachel explained with a shrug.

Wynni nodded in an excited manner, “Both sound like fun! I like music it is fun to listen to and stuff.” She announced happily as she shifted about on her feet as she looked at her teacher. “When do we start?”

"Now if you like. We can do a bit of a talking test and then a music test after a break. That way you don't get tired out and get a headache - that can happen if you strain yourself too much." he explained, picking up the boom box beside his chair and setting it to the recording of the New York city during a busy evening.
"Ready and here you go. We'll listen for a few moments then I'll pause and you can tell me what sorts of things you heard. Then we'll listen again and you can try to pick out specific things people are saying." and soon after, he hit the play button.

"Yep! I'm ready," she said as she watched him prepare things for the lesson. Her tail swished back and forth as she waited her toes building an odd rhythm of click sounds until she forces herself to still them so she can actually listen. She crouched in an odd fashion her tail coiling as she took on a look of concentration.
The tape currently on had a cacophony of sounds and seemingly endless chaos, but after a few moments she began to slowly mention what she hears, "Sirens, yelling and screaming, a gunshot, some talking, and lots of people walking..Oh and there's a baby crying, poor baby..." She murmured lightly looking thoughtful. She was missing a thing or two but it wasn't bad for a first time.

"Very good." he said calmly. Huh, she hadn't picked up on the car sounds or the honking, but that was okay consider the other details. "All right. We'll play it again now. Try to hone in on the people and figure out what they're saying. You don't have to exactly repeat phrases, you can give me the gist of things or paraphrase. Either way. Here goes." and then he went back and played again.

She nodded her talons began the odd rhythmic tapping once more between plays of the tape and his praise. Wynni seemed rather pleased with her work thus far. Once more she forced herself to stay still, though her toes rebelled until she reached her hands down and pressed them to remain still. When she finally managed to quiet her fidgeting the tape had begun to play.
Wynni dutifully listened as her tail twitched back and forth at the tip.
"'I'm drivin' here! Moron!'" She said quietly with a small squint of her eyes as she continued to listen. Wynni was carefully picking them out and discerning them.
"'Someone take care of that brat or I'll call child services!'" Wynni said after another moment her tail suddenly going still and her head canted to the side.
She blushed at the last one and murmured ashamedly, "'This s**t is the pits. I just lost my job.'" Wynni so wanted to please and impress her teacher she repeated pretty much verbatim what she could hear and then remember.

"Very good."
"Well we can tell that's a really rude city. Do you want another try to pick out anymore voices or do you want to take a break and move onto the music now?" Rachel offered.

Her shame seemed to melt away once she was praised for her work and thus made it seem worthwhile. Sure he had an odd way of speaking but he was a kind teacher and seemed to have her best interest in mind. She might have not met many other teachers yet but he was turning into a favorite, mostly due to his praises.
Wynni looked thoughtful for a brief moment before she shifted her shoulders a bit. She didn’t mind the city sounds or the rudeness of it but still she was starting to become bored with it at the moment, “We could do the music and then go back to the city-thing afterwards if we have time.” Wynni said with a small nod. She liked this lesson.

Rachel nodded and switched to the Orchestral piece. It was a lot less.....annoying to him. Though he considered things that were physically perfect unnatural and disliked them a bit, he actually found a good piece of music to be amazing. It was probably because he considered perfection of appearance cheating almost, but good music could be attained by practice and skill. And people who put the effort and determination into getting that skilled deserved his respect.
"Tell me what sorts of instruments you hear, what ones if you know the names, or just what sorts of sounds. I won't make fun of you if you feel the need to mimic some of the sounds." he assured her before he pressed the play button.
