Well...things certainly were getting interesting.
First No had given himthe surprising news...that she was, in fact, pregnant. He was going to be a father! Think of it, him, a father!! But, he wasn't the only one. This Wakia was also going to be a father, mated with Umlilo, who he had met just yesterday. That was two females, now. Two who were going to be bringing new life into the pride.
He felt as if all the heartache, all the hardship, had been worth it.
Now, now what was he doing?
Well, actually, he was going to try and have a bit of a nap in the sunshine. He hadn't slept much that night - fidgety with nervous excitement. So, he figured a little time sunbathing would help him doze.
And with this in mind he was heading towards an outcrop of jagged rocks that would offer him just enough shade to keep him from melting into a crimson puddle.
==
When he arrived to this pleasant little sunbathing spot, he would find that he wasn't the only one with that idea. Kibela was layed out in the sun, body stretched on it's side, tail lazily flicking back and forth across the sand.
She had a very thoughtful look on her face, and already she was begining to put on a bit of weight.
Over and over she debated her decision to agree to this whole cub-bearing thing. Even though it was too late to do anything about it, she was very weary. She was never much of the 'motherly' type. Damn Bodaway and his smooth talking.
Snorting, she lifted her head when she heard an approach, smiling slowly at her 'adoptive' brother. " Kidondo... "
==
He looked up, pleasantly surprised at hearing the voice of his sister, Kibela. "Looks like you beat me to it. Is there room for one more? I'm feeling particularly lazy today." He replied with a smile, moving smoothly over to where she lay. He paused a moment, glancing at her with his desert-eyes and then, with a small grunt, settled himself to the sand, yawning as he looped his tail around him.
"So, how has my magistrate been doing?"
He paused a moment to wait for her reply, smiling to himself about all the news he had heard over the last couple of days.
==
" ... I'm pregnant. "
This news was delievered bluntly, and quickly. Something she had not wanted to say, but that he did need to know. It wasn't as if she could keep it hidden from him forever afterall. And Kibela really wasn't one to postpone important news to begin with, no matter how awkward it could be.
Ruby eyes studied him closely asfter she delievered the news on just how she was light now, shifintg to sit up a bit so she was laying on her stomach, rather than her side.
==
Kidondo was not expecting that.
He'd been expecting something along the lines of; 'I've been very well, thank you.' or maybe, 'Curious about the new rogues that have joined.' But certainly not, 'I'm pregnant'.
His jaw practically hit the ground and it took him a good moment or two to gather some words. What was wrong with him? Why were all the females suddenly declaring their pregnancy to him? Three females in three days? One a day? Wow...this was getting, a little out of hand?
"Pregnant? You mean...like...having cubs, right?" It wasn't often that Kidondo sounded stupid or naive. "You're...going to be a mother?"
==
She couldn't help a light, yet somewhat worried, chuckle at his questions, slowly nodding her head. " Yes... I'll be a mother I suppose... Though perhaps this wasn't the best idea? " She murmured the last bit to herself thoughtfully, looking up to the sky, enjoying the warm sun against her face.
" It seemed like a good idea at the time. He told me he believed adding new blood to the Pride was what we needed right now. Did I do something foolish, Kidondo? " She asked him, eyes finally returning to the male.
==
He blinked away the fuzziness in his head and brought both ears forward. Right, come on now, let's try and focus on this. Kibela was going to be a mother. This was a little...out of the blue. He hadn't even realised that she had a mate, let alone was planning cubs.
However, her next words made him hesitate in asking any further questions. She didn't sound confident...in fact...it sounded like she wasn't too sure on the idea. Though, of course, it was too late to change her mind now. What was done was done.
"He? Who's he? Your mate?" He tilted his head quizzically.
"Kibela...what do you mean, foolish? You have never done anything foolish. You are wise. You think everything through..." This male certainly had to have been a smooth talker to woo his sister. "Kibela...are you okay?"
==
"I'm fine, I'm fine really. And he is not my mate. " She shook her head at that, more nervous of telling Kidondo this than she was on the news of being pregnant. " In fact, I really dont know him that well at all. Dispite this, he will not be my mate in the future either. It was a mutual decision on our part not long ago, when we crossed paths and ended up discussing the pride. " A smooth talker indeed, he had easily gained her agreement.
She kept her eyes off him, looking out across the sand.
" I'm just a little nervous I suppose. I'd never considered being a mother. But Bodaway did assure me that he will be there to help me with them while they grow up. "
==
He listened and as he did so he felt a sudden protective urge light its fire inside of him. This was his sister. No not a sister by blood, but by friendship and trust. Kibela was someone he could always turn to. She was his magistrate and to him, she was far dearer than many of his blood-siblings.
Adopted or not he had a sudden desire to go and give Bodaway a crack across the head. How dare he talk Kibela into doing something like this!? How dare he take advantage of her desire to help the pride!?
Breath. Breath Kidondo.
"At least he doesn't intend to leave you to deal with this alone." He paused. He knew he should be happy for her, knew he should have given her kind words. After all, it was a good thing; cubs. However, he'd always believed in cubs created from true love. True partnerships. But, Bodaway intended to help her with the pregnancy and raising the children. It wasn't the same as a fling...but even still.
Maybe they'd bond over time?
"All I want is for you to be happy, Kibela. I cannot say I am particularly happy with Bodaway at the moment but there's no changing things now." He smiled kindly. "Besides, you'll be a great mother. You'll raise some fine, wise children. I'm sure of that."
He paused, desperate to tell her about No's pregnancy, desperate to tell someone about it. But he couldn't. He didn't know why, but hehad a feeling this sort of thing was a female's news to tell. No, he had to be quiet until his mate had decided the time to announce it.
