I looked back, and there was a topic about whether or not you allow people to write in your books... but this one, I think, is different.
It started when my professor told me that she is currently working on a project that is a study of what people wrote/write in their dictionaries. She's been looking at dictionaries in libraries all over the country, some of them dating back to the 1800's. She finds all sorts of things written down in them, from grocery lists to children's scribbles. It got me to thinking about when you find notes written in library books and whatnot. You're seeing another person's thoughts or scribbles, and I think it really lets you feel a connection to all the people who have read that book before you. It gives the book a certain life.
And now, time for questions!
First of all, do you write in your books? If so, what do you write?
Do you even like writing in your books? Ever had a teacher/professor who wanted to grade you on what notes you wrote in the margins? Were you ever so against it that you found some other way around the assignment? (I used post-it notes)
If you don't like writing in your books, what happens when you take out a book and find that other people have little notes and highlighted passages? Ever try to erase them in the hopes of cleaning up the pages?

I love writing in books. I buy almost exclusively second-hand books, and when there's comments or notes in the margins, I feel like I'm connected to whomever owned the book before me.
I write in books when the mood takes me. I never write just to write, but if I feel like I'd want someone else to see that, or I'd like to remember it if I re-read, then I'll write it in.

No, I'm not really one to write in books, especially in my own. As to whether or not I like it when I find books highlighted and written all over in (usually from the library), that is a definite NO! I am very much one to erase stuff to make it look cleaner. But I really would not mind it if a teacher made me write in the margins (unless the margins are far too small to be written in) of a novel. So long as the books not mine, I'm happy smile

I hated getting used books for college that had someone else's highlighter marks and scribbles in them. I always liked to make my own notes (on other paper). The only books I can ever remember writing in on pupose was my college freshman year, because someone suggested it was a good study method. Even then I used pencil so I could get rid of it.

At first, I hated to see any sort of writing in books. It made me feel like the book was somehow tainted. But as the years went on, it became this sort of connection with whoever had read the book before me. I, however, don't write in my books. I like to keep them looking as good as new for as long as I can. Whenever school projects come around and we're asked to take notes, I always use post-its instead. They can't make me taint a beautiful book! rofl

I never write in books. I keep a pad of paper beside me and if I want to remember something then I write down the info or the page number. I always detest finding writing in books. Of course, I'd probably find the writing in the Prince's books rather useful. (Sorry, HP reference!)

I make notes and stuff in my Bible.I'm mostly writing notes on what the preacher says, and scriptures as well. But I don't write in regular books or my novels.I write my name in the cover and that's that. Same case with my comic books.I have gotten books fromt he library with little notes in them.I don't like that, or highlighted text. It's a library book! xD

Normally only to edit the book, if I find a spelling, grammatical, punctuation, or other type of error. Otherwise, I'll write my name/phone number on the very first page (the blank one), just in case I leave it somewhere. I'll also occasionally doodle on the corners, but thats about it.

MeaShayShay I have gotten books fromt he library with little notes in them.I don't like that, or highlighted text. It's a library book! xD That's probably why I'm so against writing in books. I've spent too much time with an eraser trying to fix books here at work that people have written notes in. I even remember one copy of a Merecedes Lackey book we had to replace because someone had taken a pen and tried to edit out any references to any god besides the "one, true God". (It was a fantasy novel, for goodness' sake!)

The only thing I ever write in my books are my name and the year I got it (if that). I have this thing of writing it upside down on the inside back cover (or page), which probably drives most people up the wall. Fwahaha. However, I could NEVER bring myself to write anything else (with the exception of my Bible, like MeaShay). I like to keep things 'clean'.
When I buy used books, I don't mind writing that's already in there. I'll erase scribbles and crap, but I like to save the names, dates and notes to loved ones. It gives a little history to the book ("A person 50 years ago got this book for Christmas by their Grandma who loved them very much!"), and makes it a little special and I get to know it's "history". xD

Aluminum, I just bought a huge coffee table book on China from a library sale, and on the inside cover is a note written from someone to the receiver, marked with Christmas 2007. It makes me wonder why someone would give it away to the sale when it was a Christmas gift, and they only had it for a year, no less. xD

I do write in my books but only in a few different volumes and not very often. I most often just write notes.
It's quite interesting to buy second hand books and see what people have written and/or left in them.

Devony, Fwahaha! Only a year? Oh gosh, that is so sad! Hehehe! It would make me feel very bad to get rid of a Christmas present that soon, whether I liked it or not. ._.

This goes along with writing or finding things in used books. I ordered a collection of books (all occult or similarly dark), and they had to pass customs to get to me. I looked on the invoice when they came today and the seller wrote "Favorite Thomas the Tank Engine Stories" instead of the actual book titles on the claim. rofl

Aluminum: I know! And it's a beautiful, beautiful book, too. I should write down what's written inside it... Gifter of the book on China "Mike, Although at times I know you must think I am from a different planet, trust this new year we can learn what makes each other tick and work to preserve and foster the college spirit of lifelong learning. I appreciate your patience with me and wish you all the best in 2008. Happy New Year!" Oops, I thought it was for Christmas. Well, close enough. But such a nice message... who would want to cast this book aside so quickly? I'd feel terrible! gonk Nicky: Omigoodness, what are you reading that they would have to go under the guise of children's stories to reach you? xD
