I have read "Lament of the Lamb", "Life", and "Model". All were pretty good but I have found an anime that will blow you away if you like dark and gory. The characters are cute but have so much more to them! Curious? It is called "When They Cry". I just started watching it today. I am on episode 12 right now. The great thing about it is there is a gaurantee that someone WILL die in the end. Pretty sweet, huh?
Does liking dark things make you a dark person? I hope not because that would not be good for my image. *points to self* I am the cutesy ditz that needs protecting. Anyone else have an image?

((1 answer - 1 post))
1. What kind of anime do you like?
2. What is the worst thing you have ever done?
3. How do you define gothic?
4. What kind of art do you like?
5. Any cutters in the house?

I've heard about When They Cry from a couple of different sources now, I suppose I'll have to look into them sometime. I am a bit surprised, however, that it's becoming a popular anime/manga despite originating as a cheezy interactive novel/computer game.
To what type of image are you referring? Everyone has an image by which they will be viewed/interpreted by others. If you are referring to a constructed self image then you must to some extent be lying to yourself when you doubt it should be natural for you to be dark or to like something dark. You should like what you like and like yourself for liking what you like.
Life is dark, therefore liking life is dark. Not liking life is equally dark. Apathy is dark. Therefore everyone is dark since everyone should fit into one of these categories.

What you say makes sense to me. My friends think I am hyperactive, friendly, and cute but I just want to shout at them that I am not that way. I like sick things, dislike meaningless chatter, and can't stand immature games.
What about you? All questions applied: Do you put up a facade for others? Are you a dark person?

1. I enjoy a wide variety of anime so it may be easier for me to list a few specifics. FLCL, Ghost in the Shell, Serial Experiments Lain, School Rumble, Princess Mononoke, Speed Grapher, Black Lagoon, Ranma 1/2, and Ergo Proxy.
3. Of the many definitions for Goth/Gothic I most prefer to use the word in reference to 18th century Romanticism.
4. In terms of paintings I enjoy surrealism and cubism.
5. I live in a dorm by myself and I don't cut my self intentionally.
I don't intentionally put up a facade. If someone doesn't accept how I naturally act they are no friend of mine. Instead of dark I would much rather consider myself realistic.

NewGenious Does Death Note count??? I liked that... I liked Death Note also. If you ask whether it counts as Gothic anime I would personally venture that it does not. It's much more of a simple suspense serious because regardless of some of the art, the themes aren't Gothic. Fun fact: China banned Death Note in all its reiterations because school children were making mock death notes.

Ergo Proxy is very cyber punk if you're into that sort of thing. It also raises existential questions. It has good art and interesting characters.

I found it exotic in a way I can't explain. The art is different and the ideas are somewhat original....but I really like japanese voice actors.

Ergo Proxy's art features a combination of 2D digital cel animation, 3D computer modeling, and digital special effects.
