Trielnolu Baen'duis sat in the main room of an inn called the Graceful Spider and finished penning a letter to a friend of hers. She handed it to a waiting courier and told him to make all haste. Then she reclined in the cushiony chair to wait.

The Graceful Spider... Mas D'aun entered the front doors with more then a little curiousity upon his face. His lips were pursed thoughtfully as he took small but swift steps inside. He paused a moment to flick his silver tipped fingers through his hair, his blue eyes darting about the room. He gripped his staff firmly in his alternate hand, and felt a moment of satisfaction as those nearest to him shifted in their chairs very slightly away from him.
Mas continued to linger within the doorway, the letter he had recieved requested he come here but...whatever for? There was no description of the package he was to pick up. Surely he would have been told it was with the owner if that were the case. It was only the glimpse of a strikingly familar purple glow that caught his eyes. Widening in pleasent surprise, mas began to approch Tri-No hurriedly. The gems upon his cheek, forehead, and chest glimmered within the faded fairy light of the tavern as he approched. "Triel-Nolu??"

Trielnolu stood up to greet Mas, a gesture of respect which a female probably oughtn't to show a male. She didn't really care what spectators thought. One of the only good things about her bout of madness was that she'd basically lost any sense of shame or self-consciousness she might've had. It was strangely liberating not to care what others thought of her actions, and to simply say that she was female, noble, and a mage, and entitled to whatever eccentricities pleased her. She began to understand her cousin Shri a little better, having taken this new attitude toward life.
On her face was a smile which made her cheeks, still more chubby than the drow norm, but thinner than they had been when last she saw the elderboy of House Barrith, very plump. She was pleased to see her friend - the only person she actually considered a friend. With a slight flourish of her hands which illuminated her face with purple faerie fire she replied, "One and the same. Who is this stylish, handsome person I'm addressing? Surely not Mas D'aun of House Barrith?"
It got easier every day to model her behavior after her more attractive and more desirable cousin's, and it had astounded her during her stay at the inn that it made a difference in how others interacted with her. She was still conscious of their surprise to see a member of their own race whose frame held needless poundage, but she refused to let it bother her. The one thing which really concerned her was how long she would be able to maintain this carefree attitude. Not very long if her request was refused.

By the Goddess! It was her! It seemed to Mas, as she lit up her features withher own fairy light, that she had managed to lose a bit of the weight she had carried when they had first met. "Ah! Tri-no. You flatter me....please continue." Mas D'aun replied good naturedly. This was not the sort of package he had expected to recieve! He self consciously ran the silver tipped fingers of his right hand down over the front of his purle and silver robe and to the ornate belt about his waist.
With a small nod of his head, he remembered to show her a bit of the rspect due to her. Such was his surprise that he had not remembered what it was that was expected of him. "Howevere did you arrange this? Why did you not just come to House Barrith? How are you doing? I read about your...ah...hand... but you do seem to be looking rather well!"

Tri-no grinned. "I'll be happy to continue flattering you, and you may, of course, continue to flatter me, but perhaps not in the main room of an inn. It might give people the wrong sort of idea. You, at least, have a reputation to concern yourself with, after all. Besides, we are in a city which I fear is more my cousin's than mine at the moment."
"As for how I arranged this..." She shrugged. "I told my aunt I planned to continue my magecraft studies in Gallidurth, that I knew of someplace I could stay while I studied, and that I would establish a connection with House Barrith. She seemed more interested in the last part than anything else, and particularly eager to see me off after that."
With a glance at her glamour-disguised hand and a fleeting scowl she continued, "I am much improved. And I have a great deal to tell you, but much of it will have to wait. May I suggest again that we remove ourselves to someplace less public? I currently have a room upstairs, but that might contribute to the misimpressions people could form."

Mas D'aun's eyes flickered upwards towards the ceiling as he considered the inn room above. "Hmm. Inn rooms are best used for conversations of ill intentions and disreputable acts Dearest Tri-No. Let me accompany you to House Barrith please. I do agree that I have something of a reputation to consider, though it is not nearly as important to me as getting you someplace far more suitable for one of your stature." Mas practically purred as he turned and swept a arm towards the exit of the Inn.
Though he was burning with questions for her, Mas attempted to keep the conversation light on the walk back to House Barrith. "Hmm, so you have someplace to stay here do you? I hope you did not mean that inn. Or is there another contact here in Gulliadurth that I should know about? Hmm, have you been speaking with someone else behind my back Tri-no?" Mas gently teased, one of his fingers lifting to wag in the air towards her. "Should I be jealouse?"
He paused as they reached the House in short order. The wonderful thing about House Barrith was how close it was to the busniess section of the city. With servants opening the doors before them, Mas had no problem escorting Tri-no to the same guestroom that they had first met in. "So your honoraable Aunt seemed interested in establishing a connection with House barrith did she? I wonder if she knows the true nature of this House's power then."

Tri-no was only to glad to be led away from the inn. The Graceful Spider wasn't a totally unpalatable place, but she preferred the accommodations one enjoyed when staying in a manor much more. She did like her creature comforts. She had already paid her tab there, and most of what she needed fit into a convenient pouch she wore around her neck. Along with her House insignia, it contained a magical pouch which held a seemingly endless supply of spell components and a differently enchanted pouch which held the majority of her wardrobe. Her coins she carried in an entirely different manner which made them impossible to steal. It was very difficult to steal coins which were summoned from a coffer in another city, after all.
"Oh, yes. Actually I thought I might stay with my cousin. Shrisin? I believe I mentioned her once or twice in my letters?" Her lips quirked into another grin. "So, yes. I believe much jealousy is in order."
Her grin faded as they walked, though it was replaced by a more-pleasant-than-not expression. She didn't recognize any of the passages Mas led her down once they reached House Barrith, though she thought the room they ended up in might be familiar. Maybe? Mostly she was too busy being impressed by the grandeur of the place to take much note of the directions and turns they took.
"Of course she was. As to knowing the true nature of Barrith's power, I sincerely doubt it, though I wouldn't put it past her. I'm honestly surprised she even knows of House Barrith. It's not as if a Matron need concern herself with affairs beyond the boundaries of the city she occupies. There's no reason, really, to spread your attentions so far. Better to watch the Houses below and above."
She shook her head. Her matron was so unusual in so many ways. There were times when her behavior was positively un-drowlike. Someday Tri-no would have to get rid of her, but she would not be able to do so until she was more secure in her powers. And that had to happen before Shrisin was ordained as a high priestess. Should Shri be ordained before Tri-no was granted a master mage's status, the ensuing struggle for supremecy could destroy Baen'duis. Tri-no had no desire to destroy the house she wanted to rule.

Once the door to the room was closed Mas set his Serpent Eye staff against the wall and made himself comfortable in a chair provided by the vanity. His smile was still more or less present upon his lips. The initial sense of pleasure upon seeing and jesting with Tri-no had faded somewhat by now. Now that they were alone they could speak far more seriously.
"Now I know you do not mean to impose upon your cousin, so I feel obliged to offer you a place here for as long as you need to stay my Dearest Tri-no. But you must tell me what your intentions here are." Mas placed his chin in his palm and rested his elbow on top of the vanity, the silver tips of his fingers curled up over his chin as he reguarded her.
"I am a bit concerned with your Matrons approval of your journy here. If she is unaware of my Matrons condition I can only assume that she means for you to make nice with my mother and perhaps grant her access to the Raiders. If she is aware however...I am rather concerned. Your cousins presence here and then you, I might feel threatened I'm afraid. You have complained of having too many family members have you not? A prime way to effectively get rid of family members might be to move them into a open House in a city where, as you have so keenly noticed, you do not have to concern yourself with their position."
Goodness! Mas fretted to himself a little. He was seeing conspiracys just about everywhere now that he cared about how to keep his position intact. "Have you managed to break free of those disturbances? I should ask this before we get into heavy discusssion. I would like to know if I should take steps to detect or prevent an attack upon you while you are here my dear."

Tri-no sat down as well after leaning her staff against the wall behind her chosen seat. She took a few moments to study the layout of the room and note that Mas had, indeed, finished making his staff, and that it was actually a splendid piece. She could see the magic sparkling in and around it. He'd done a very good job with it. It almost made her wish that she could have had the opportunity to do the same. Maybe she would, once she reached a level of magical proficiency where she could claim the full title of mage, rather than just that of a student mage. She wasn't even sure she could accurately claim to be that, since she had no master to learn from at the moment. Just her books, and whatever or whoever she found in Gallidurth to help her.
"I didn't mean for you to feel obliged to make me any sort of offer, but if you're serious, I would appreciate a room here, at least until I find someplace more permanent to take up residence. It wouldn't have to be anything grand: I'm fairly used to spartan quarters, courtesy of Brizthara." She grinned wryly, recalling the older mage's disdain for material things. She suspected Brizthara would have slept in a cel if she could have arranged for it, and expected her apprentice to do the same.
"I don't know what my matron means for me to do with your matron while I'm here. I think she understands that I'm here primarily to study. I only mentioned your house becaue it's the only one I'm aware of in Gallidurth besides that of Yathtallar, which would be a powerful ally, indeed, but unlikely. I don't quite understand my aunt, but I believe she is using my supposed plan to 'make nice' with your mother as an excuse to send me here."
She paused. She had had a lot of time to think about this, and she had come to a conclusion she wasn't sure would be wise to share, but which she would, so that Mas would have some idea of what perceptions she was operating under.
"I think my aunt has come to see that I may be of more value than she initially believed. The...difficulties I had while I was studying almost certainly came from Shri in some way. At least initially. I don't think she approves of Shri's methods, or perhaps she didn't want me insane. The problem is that Shri was very careful, and there's no conclusive proof that she was really the souce of my difficulties. That's part of the reason I'm here, actually, to gather evidence, if any exists, that Shri was behind the attacks against me."
She stopped again to collect her thoughts and make sure that she was still answering the questions Mas had posed. She wasn't quite sure what he meant to insinuate by his comment about moving family members into an open House. She couldn't believe that any Matron would want to have to be responsible for two Houses. It seemed like enough work just running one, and Baen'duis was not particularly large or prestigious, either. Ruling a House with the reputation Barrith had seemed incredibly unpleasant.
"I don't think my aunt has any interest in acquiring a second House. And I don't think she'd be at all interested in trying to take over your House. As for my disturbances, Brizthara conducted some research into them while I was recuperating and found that the inital disturbances were caused by an outside party, but the ones which occurred later on and were more damaging had actually been the result of my own magic getting away from me and actualizing my subconscious fears. Looking back, and going based on what Brizthara says, the third-party interference slacked off about the same time you and Taliesin became close." She smiled, realizing that she had yet to give an acutal answer to that question. "In short, I'm disturbance-free."

Mas continued to lounge in a manner of ease. His blue eyes fixed upon Tri-no as he watched the female settle herself comfortably and began to explain things to him. He was more then content to let her have the time she needed to speak. His head tilting to the side from time to time as he considered what sort of changes might occur in his life now.
"Oh bother that Tri-No. I could never accept you taking up residence anywhere else in the city, unless it were with a House of higher standing. it would just be unforgiveably rude of me. What sort of ally would I be otherwise?" His lips quirked lightly at Tri-no before he continued. "It is good that you are used to spartan accomodations. I am afraid the guest rooms of House Barrith are not grandly decorated. But I would have no qualms with adding a few comforts at your request. In fact...."
Mas stood up from his chair. The silver tips of his fingers taping with a exaggerated throughtfulness against his cheek. "I could probably offer you one of the Family Quarters on the second floor. The rooms are normally reserved for immediate family members of the Matron, but as there is only Micarreth and I there are plenty of rooms to spare. I'll have one of the slaves air out the quarters next to mine...if you are not uneasy about that?"
The question of her matrons motives still concerned Mas. Not because he believed that Tri-no would knowingly use him for her matrons purposes. But simply because..well..any female with an interest in his House was reason for him to worry, as he had not garunteed himself control of the House yet. "Well, I suppose I should not allow paranoia to intervene and ruin our current relationship. My primary concern was that she would wish to use you to find out the health status of my Matron, and then send one of those abundant females you mentioned your family had to try and steal my House away from me. With less females under her own roof it would be less likely she would have to worry about one of them turning on her, and she would gain a useful ally in another city. As I said though, this is my paranoia. I'm afraid i see plotting females around every corner." Mas placed a hand over his lips to utter a weak laugh. "I even suspect my brother of plotting my death though I've found no real reason to support it. I'm afraid I've become terribly worrisome. I hope it is not an annoynace to you Tri-no dear."
Mas did not want to wait for a answer to his fretting, but paused long enough to be poliet before he tackled...or perhaps the term was pounced upon the subject of her troubles. "Hmmm. I am disinclined to believe it but... I am certainly no master mage yet. I still have a bit more to learn so I will not completely disbelieve what I can not understand yet. Still, if Shri is here and it is that you are attempting to learn if she was the one behind your problems then I positively must insist that I have some wards put up for detection at the very least. Would you grant me permission to do that? Your safety is something I value and I would like to do what I can to help. Just tell me what you would like of me and I will lend what aid I can to you Tri-No."

"That's far more generous of you than I could have hoped," Tri-no said, startled into reacting before she could give any sort of thought to her words. "I would not feel uneasy quartered near you. I don't believe you're the sort who would try anything stupid. Not to mention, I'm fairly certain I'm not really to your tastes."
She watched the movement of his silver fingertips and wondered where he had gotten the idea to do that. It was really a fascinating fashion statement, and totally unique. At least, it was unlike anything she had ever seen living in Llurth Dreir. She liked it, and wondered if he would be flattered or offended, should she take to painting her fingernails with silver gilt. It would make her hands' motions much more interesting, and a mage's hands, if they were necessary in spell casting, ought to at least be attention-getting. Or so she felt. She couldn't picture a situation in which she would have to cast a spell without someone being aware of it. Not practically.
"Mas, if my aunt was at all interested in your matron's health, she wouldn't have sent me. Though if that is a concern of yours, it's as well that I burned most of your letters at some point."
"And which part is supposed to be an annoyance to me? The part where I can reciprocate for all those letters I whined in, or the part where your brother may be trying to kill you? I agree, that's horribly annoying of you. I don't know how I stand your company." She gave Mas a very odd look, to make sure he knew that she thought he was being ridiculous. At least in worrying that he would annoy her.
"If you would prefer to have wards put up, I'd be foolish to protest. I would be reluctant to put up my own, for fear they would interfere with the magics protecting your House, but I'll assume you won't have the same difficulty. As for anything I would like of you...nothing comes to mind at the moment. At some point I may ask if I may borrow the books you studied from."
She siezed on a new topic of conversation: "I do admire your staff. Will you tell me about it?"

Mas was pleased at the startlement he managed to get out of Tri-No. It made him feel a bit light and perhaps even more appreciated for his supposed generousity. "Grand then! Give me just a moment!" Swpeeing off to the door, mas cracked it open and flashed a silvery gesture to someone outside the door. Leaning forwards, he hurriedly whispered "Send a trio of slaves to the Webbed Quarters.... Yes the quarters next to mine. I wish for them to air and dust it out immediatly. Send another trio to the fourth vault on the first floor to fetch some nice things...Oh I don't know! A rug, some vases, candlesticks. Just a few nice expensive pieces to put in the corners.... Yes the Lady will be staying with us for some time. i want everything perfect by the time...."
Mas pulled his head back into the room and turned to glance at Tri-No. Then he looked back out and continued his hurried conversation. "Yes I think that would be fitting. Make certain there is a wide varity of soaps and oils in the baths. Ah! Take the towls from my chambers for now and use the comforter from the bed. make certain there are some heat stones in the fireplace to chase away the chill before we ascend...well...go!"
Closing the door once his orders were given, mas turned a bright and rather gleeful smile upon Tri-no. "Now you are teaseing me. I apologize, I will not think such foolish things anymore. If I were going to be an annoyance I am certain you would not have agreed to stay here, hmm?"
Slipping over towards Tri-no, masreached out with one of the hands that she had been admiring, and made to gently touch the tips to her hair. "Oh! This shall be fun. May I fuss over you a bit? I'd really love to do something with your hair, and if you wish you may use any of the books I have in my library. Just...knock before entering. I really would appreciate that. If you wish I could help you study? I'm following an enchanters path though, what is it you were going to follow?"
Mas paused to look across to his staff, and he could not help the pride that radiated from his very chest it seemed. "Ah! My Serpent Eye staff. I have not given it a proper name yet, but I am taking my time about that." Shifting to cross to the staff, Mas lightly tapped the silver on his fingertips against the silver of the staff. "The eyes are all from the Beholder. i managed to create a particular glaze that, when applied properly, will cause anything to turn into a crystal like form. The eyes still look like the real thing but... " He reached up and tapped one tipped finger against the uppermost eye so it clinked softly. "Stone! Isn't it delisciously disturbing? Micarreth can't eat if I bring it to the table and lean it in the chair next to me.!"

Tri-no did her very best not to eavesdrop, but her ears themselves seemed determined to know everything that was going on around her. It was a self-preservation instinct, she knew, but she sincerely wanted to believe that she would have less need of those here. It wasn't as if anyone was stupid enough to try to attack House Barrith. It seemed the majority believed the Matron sane, and so there would be no chance of a lesser House trying to destroy a House as successful as Barrith. A higher one, maybe, but considering how smoothly things ran under the current administration, it would be a detriment to the city if matters were disturbed.
"I hope you don't mind that I tease you. It occurred to me that one of the reasons Shri is better-liked than I is that she is very easy with people - and not just in the 'willing to sleep with anyone who's interested' way. I'm trying, though it occasionally shames me to admit it, to emulate her behavior to some extent."
She almost jumped when Mas touched her hair, being unused to physical contact. Mentally she chided herself. If she was to become more like Shri, as she had planned, she would have to become accustomed to being touched. Shri was willing to touch anyone, even the lowest male, in casual conversation and give the impression that the distinction between their classes meant nothing to her. Tri-no knew that would take a great deal of practice on her part.
"Thank you. I will certainly knock. You may do what you wish with my hair. I'm afraid without my usual hairdresser it will quickly become unremarkable and dull. At least until I can find someone locally." She thought for a few moments about Mas' question regarding the direction of her studies. "I'm still not sure. I have no particular inclination one way or the other. Likely I will also choose to pursue an enchanter's path. Recent events being what they are, I don't think I would like the course of study involved with being an illusionist. Certainly I have no desire to become a necromancer. Better to leave that to priestesses and perverts."
Her eyes followed Mas' gaze as it turned to his staff. The eyes weren't nearly so disconcerting as she had expected them to be when he initially proposed the idea. Which is not to say that they weren't a little disturbing, but when he tapped on the crystalized bodyparts she felt herself much reassured. She knew, of course, that he had crystalized them, and that crystalization is defined as turning something hard, but she had still expected them to squish. That no squishing occurred was an immense relief to her.
"I would feel sorrier for your brother if your suspicions weren't what they are, regarding his activities." Then she added, because it really did seem appropriate, "Thank you for the consideration you've shown me. It's most un-drowlike for you to be this generous. I don't know what I can do to repay you."

"Oh no. Do not worry about it. Your teaseing is...something I appreciate." Mas lightly responded as he toyed with one of the eyes on his staff. "I have not had company I have been comfortable enough with to be so relaxed with. Aside from Taliesin of course but that is another matter entierly."
Mas tilted his head to peer through a veil of silver hair back at Tri-no as she would speak of being more like her cousin. "I thought you despised your cousin Tri-no? Why would you want to be more like her? Just to be better liked then your cousin?" Mas pressed his fingertips to his lips in consideration. He supposed her cousin's popularity might be a factor in Tri-nos glum sort of mood at times. Perhaps even a impact on her self image?
It was these things that he considered, while also taking into consideration how she had seemed uneasy at his slight touch. Perhaps this would not be as easy as he had considered? "Well you can make use of my slaves. They are better trained for working on females after all." And he possibly was not going to be needing them soon anyways. What a depressing thought! "I think it would be a fine thing if we studied together Tri-No. Enchanting is a incredibly useful magical skill you know. Not only was I able to use it for the making of my staff," Mas affectionatly ran his fingers down the length of the staff with more then a little showing of pride. " but you can also turn anything into a dangerouse weapon. You can enchant just anout anything with an exploding rune spell you know. Ugh...and I do agree about the necromancy bit. I seriously dislike the ill effects studying negative energy magic has on your body."
Mas flipped his hand in a careless gesture as Tri-No began to speak about his brother. His eyes turned instead to the vanity mirror so he could inspect the fall of his hair. "Micarreth will learn his place soon enough. I've finally taken it upon myself to put the boy in his place. He'll either heel to me or he will find his life immensely pain filled and unpleasent." Ah...but her mentioning of his un-drow like behavior did give mas reason to pause. His blue eyes flickered, with a rather shameful cast, to the reflected blue looking out at him. A very...un-drow like color they were after all.
"There is something I could ask of you. But I am uncertain if it would be proper of me. Yet..." Mas turned to look at Tri-no as he spoke. "Your the only female I could possibly trust to ask. I simply could not bring myself to address any other female, and I do feel rather fondly for you, if nothing more then out of pity for the troubles you have suffered..."

Tri-no knew she was supposed to feel flattered by Mas' declaration that he felt comfortable, relaxed with her. Relaxed was not, after all, something drow tended to feel when in one another's presence due to the vindictive, devious, and underhanded nature of their culture, and so do feel relaxed in another's presence was tantamount either to dismissing them as being so non-threatening so as to be below notice or to having an unnatural relationship with the other drow.
Tri-no flattered herself that she was not totally non-threatening, and he did acknowledge that her relationship with Mas was unusual. They did seem to regard each other as equals, which ought to have made them rivals, but for the fact that she was female, and therefore superior by birth, but even then the equality in their relationship was odd, and the lack of enmity due to their equality was odd. Not to mention, she did feel genuine affection for Mas, though not the sort of romantic affection which seemed to be the only sort really permitted, and even then disapproved of. So their relationship was anamolous. She wasn't sure how she felt about that, really. Whenever she thought of anamalous relationships she couldn't help thinking of Shri and Val.
The relationship she had with Mas was not that kind of relationship.
"It's not that I want to be more like her. There are many connotations there that I do not want to assume. However, I am capable of recognizing her strengths and skills, and it's not unusual for a person to try to take away someone else's advantage and leveling the playing field by acquiring the same resources and abilities as their opponent. I know I will never be better liked than she, unless I can prove myself far more competent, because people are ultimately stupid enough to be taken in by a pretty face and an ingenuous smile." It was a bit of a sore point with Tri-no, that she'd had to work twice as hard a Shri since childhood to win acknowledgment for anything she did, simply because Shri had a way of smiling at people which won them over.
"I appreciate the offer of your slaves, and company in studying, though I fear you will have to tutor me somewhat, at least initially. I am not at your level. Not yet anyway. I'm not actually sure if I have to take an examination to call myself a mage if I'm not studying at a school. Even if I did start calling myself a mage, I still wouldn't be at your level."
Tri-no had always been adept at picking out what was wrong with herself as a defense against others who might do it for her, though no one - even Shri - had ever shown much interest in teasing her for her failings and deficiencies.
"Those things had crossed my mind, about enchantment. Truly, though, I would not enjoy necromancy, and illusionry makes me uncomfortable. If I really was the source of the latter half of my disturbances, I may be too gullible to be safe conjuring falsities. What if I were to forget that they were not real? Brizthara told me that I ought to pursue illusionry anyway, because I seem to have a gift for it, based on past behavior, but I can't bring myself to do it." It wasn't something she easily admitted, but she felt that she had to explain her selection. She didn't want Mas to get the wrong idea. She was studying magecraft because it was the only thing which made her stand out in her House, and she was studying enchantment because it was the only area she could bring herself to study.
"I'm glad to hear that you are solving your issues with the secondboy. If you need any assistance there, I'll be happy to help in any way that I can," she offered. "Yet I suspect that is not what you are about to ask me. What is it that i can do for you?"
She tried to ignore his use of the word "pity."
