Visions She had been exiled from her herd, but it was worth it. She was with him, the one who understood her. She knew absolutely nothing of what he looked like, but that was fine with her. Looks were of no value, the spirit, the soul… that is what matters. And even though her eyes were all but dead, just sightless white orbs that accented what was, unknown to her, a feral and delicate face. But none the less, she would still see him. See his aura, a golden glow illuminating that ever-dark that filled the empty space of what to most was the dominant sense. Golden light, yes that was the only way to describe it. She has seen it in one of her visions, amongst the horror and the blood that filled her mind, those dreams that had in the end caused her own to speak in whispers about her. It made her thing of the sun, or the warmth of the gentle fire, or the comfort of the summer warmed earth beneath her hooves. Few could understand it, and He did. That’s all that mattered.

Skoll watched his companion pick her was delicately along the path, her tiny shimmering hooves nimble as if she could really take flight with the wings painted to her sides. Those eyes filled with liquid darkness held a slight amusement but foremost a soft caring look that if one did not know him well might go unnoticed all together. Luckily the only one who really did know him had her back to him, and even if she didn’t, it wasn’t like she could she the faint grin on his lips. Though she did seem to have an uncanny ability to see his emotions, without as much as a word from him. He lowered his face, the white painted mask startling against the dark brown that dominated most of his body, the headpiece and jewel like horns glimmering as they caught the sunlight, as he studied his path with a collected composure of a scholar. Unlike the tiny fleet of foot mare in front of him, he relied on his eyes to show him the physical path… Now matters of the mysterious were completely different. “Hati if you keep at this pace im going to have a most ungraceful incident “He said, voice laced with humor and ruefulness all at once. His hooves were sure footed but one wrong step could send him tumbling down the slop, the loose rocks falling with him as he crashed into the blind mare. The image was so vivid in his mind he actually slowed down a pace or to. He didn’t have the future sight as Hati did, but one could never be too careful.

She paused for moment, her ears standing to attention as she turned her head to Skoll. True she was blind, but she had the sudden sensation that she was looking right into the sun, or the core of some great volcano, as if her face should have grown hot. He had such a strong mental presence she was drawn to him like a moth to the flame, drawn from her little island, through the swift current of the waters to the mainland, following that glimmering beacon that dwarfed the others like the moon to the stars. ‘Now you could completely avoid such unsightly accidents if you would just take the easier path, I told you the way to the east would have been easiest. “

“Oh and let you beat me to the floor? I think not “He said with a wry grin, more for his own benefit then for hers.” I would never live it down, to be beaten in a show of physical endurance by a tiny, blind, mare “he said, chuckling as if he could be offended by such a silly thing. He was a large stallion, muscular and swift, with a solidness to him that would make anyone thing twice before starting a dual. But his truly strong point was his mind. He was a Shaman, a stallion connected to the other side; his own body was adorned with metals and stones to enhance his focus to the spiritual world that filled every organic thing.

“Well at his rate im going to beat you anyway. ‘ She said almost distractedly as she lightly leapt over a boulder, landing without so much as a small shower of rocks down the path. She wasn’t sure what was at the bottom of the canyon, but all she knew is that something was there. It glimmered in the back of her mind like some violet stone reflecting the light around it. At first she wasn’t sure if it was really there, but then it would flare, almost blinding her with its brilliance, before fading away to an almost invisible shine. Now it was ebbing as if it were and ember cooling in the night air, its heat burning out but not quite there. “It’s down here somewhere and I think if you don’t hurry we are going to miss it completely “Always in a different spot… always, and never for very long. Days…. weeks they had followed, sometimes running a whole night, in a frantic effort to catch up with it, then it would disappear, and suddenly it would be back were they started. Now as the moon rose high above their heads a panic started to set in…. it was almost out of her sight now, they were so close now she could almost taste it. Cool like water sweet and clean deep from the earth, like some soft violet night blooming flower that would be tender to the teeth. “It’s almost… no we can’t miss it this time! “ She said with her voice rising with her growing anxiety. The glow behind her eyes was almost non existent.

Hearing hatis worries take shape in a physical panic that he almost never saw, and he had spent every wakening moment of the past seven years with her, he gritted his teeth and leapt over the same boulder. He cleared it warily, but he weighted so much more then the little Luna moth that the rocks on the path beneath his feet shifted, and then skidded, and suddenly he was sliding down the steep path, trying to backtred to keep himself from an uncontrolled slide the last fifty feet of canyon wall. He worked as hard as he could to use his own weight to support hati as the path slid unrelentingly faster

The ground under her was moving, and she let out a gasp as suddenly the world shifted this way and that, as if she were walking on marshy floor and suddenly she stepped into a deep bog. There was that blinding warmth and she pressed herself to it, her legs locked like she was trying to will the path still. Then suddenly the movement was over….. Packed earth was underneath her hooves… they were on the floor. Were was it? She reached out with her mind, gazing into the unrelenting black with its golden sun….. And saw nothing. NO! They couldn’t have missed it… it was just here! She felt it! They have worked so hard, the past three hours spend navigating treacherous paths and walls of the canyon… all for… wait; she turned her head down the side of the canyon, and saw it, a faint glimmer of shimmering pale violet. “There! ‘ And with that she bolted.

He had not even caught his breath from the existent of the slide and already his little mare was off running around. She saw were she was heading, the dead end of the canyon, nothing but the sheer cliff of wall that even a mountain goat dare not tred…. That…. And a dead tree, long released from its mortal coil, all ashen and brittle. That couldn’t be what was glimmering in hatis mind, trees did not move, and there was just nothing else there. He narrowed his eyes… the lights hati saw were always links of the soul and to the future. The future came in vivid dreams were in which she was completely unaware of her surroundings, and hati was very much aware of everything right now, which meant it was a soul… which meant it was something living. Hati was attuned well enough to be able to tell the difference between a living and a dead soul, and she was so sure it was a living creature. Yet there was nothing living aside from some very musically inclined crickets.

There it was faint, a soft glowing violet, so soft now that even as she approached she couldn’t even make out what she was seeing, Always the aura gave a feel to the person, but all she felt now was an overwhelming sorrow, as if the world were breaking around the soul “Run, they are coming” Soft and sad she heard “You must run now “ So sad. So very very sad.

He watched her move as if she were looking at a person, and his confusion grew, there was just nothing there, yet she acted as if she were walking up and going to start a conversation.

“If you don’t run now its all over” that sad voice continued ‘ Go, go now before it begins, I wont be able to help you.. “ Sorrow so thick she swore it would choke her, the faint aura fading as if she were sure it was almost gone. ‘ Before what begins? “ Hati asked, her voice soft and gentle as it always waves, she always spoke like that, to everyone, as if she were talking to a creature she was afraid were either going to run, or attack. Then suddenly the light flared, so brilliant and bright that it was like an explosion of violet light, so extreme it hurt her mind, tearing a scream from her throat, her vision filled with a soft golden face, a gentle looking mare who was crowned with a wreath of curling violet hair. ‘ The Hunt. It begins now” And with that, the world around her went black and silent.
