Has your opinion ever changed due to fan fics?
  Yes, and I'm glad.
Yes, and I wish it hadn't.
I'd never let a fan fic change my opinion. JKR's words are the only ones that matter.
I don't usually read fan fictions.

Have you had a certain opinion about a character and after reading several fan fics about them changed your mind?

Maybe an author did a good job justifying the actions of someone you used to hate?

Maybe there was a person that didn't bother you very much, but after a few fics you found them annoying?

Share you thoughts and experiences! exclaim whee

YES!
Ok so I read this fanfic by RootbeerFloat. It's called I Didnt Know You Cared. I was really really surprised because it's a Hermione/Draco fanfic and I usually really hate those because honestly it's a match that we all know is NEVER going to happen but I LOVED this one. It's a romance but its super funny. Basically they get like magnetized to each other so they can only be a couple of feet apart and crazy stuff starts to happen. It changed my mind on the whole Draco thing because I loved the way she portrayed him. He was still a jerk but his coming around to being nice wasn't so sudden. So yea if you have the time because it's super long give it a try.

Hmm.. I guess they started my love of James. I used to only read Ron and Hermione fics. Then 2 years ago, I started reading maruader fanfics. Best decision of my life.

They are also why Harry annoys me. biggrin

Well, reading various Marauder fanfics in which the author poorly hid his/her own hatred of Peter Pettigrew inspired me to try and figure out the little rat. My own fanfiction, Cat, Rat, and Dog has gotten lots of reviews saying that it has changed my readers' opinions about Peter. And so I'm glad about that. Being that author that changes those kinds of opinions makes my day.

And I agree with Suze. Harry in Fanfiction can be very annoying. Especially AllCaps!Harry. *shudders* I know that one I'm thinking of was a crackfic, but it still annoyed me.

I think I tend to bring more of those thoughts in conversations with fans and fellow fanfic writers, but after the fourth book I did read a Malfoy-centric fic that dealt with the relationship between Draco and his mother. It made me rethink on what their family dynamic is and that evolved into my thoughts today.

I also enjoyed reading Ginny and Neville fics so much that it widely scews with my brain when reading the books. Not to mention after book five, I was certain Luna and Harry would be a couple at sometime.

I have read some fics that make be greatful J.K.Rowling knows how to write reasonable characters and love stories, otherwise we might have some very screwed up minds. The worst thing I ever came across, and it makes me shutter still, was Filtch hiding out in a broken stall in the girl's bathroom. Needless to say I didn't ACTUALLY finish that one, but it didn't start off creepy and as soon as that was stated, I clicked my back button. But I still read the words and it just doesn't make it easy to face the character, when it already is hard enough to like him.

I think there are both negative and positive opinions that can be formed after reading fanfics.

Gina, I will definitely be reading that! I usually read Marauders' era, but I have a soft spot for Hermione/Draco since the first fan fic I ever stumbled across was that pairing.

Anyway, I started this thread because I had a rather important opinion change. Everyone loves Sirius, don't they? Well, I didn't after reading the books the first 5 books three times. xp

He was so reckless, loud, moody, quick to anger, sulky, ocassionally immature and many other things that irritate me in a person. (I didn't blame him for being unforgiving since I'm that way too.) Escaping Azkabn was not enough to impress me when he had so many other negative attributes. However, Remus has always been my fave character and once I discovered that fan fics existed I wanted to read fics about him. Also, I was curious about how people thought James and Lily got together. Inevitably, I encountered lots of Sirius while reading about the others. I still didn't like him yet.

I wanted to read about Remus in romantic situations because I LOVE him, but I invariably grew jealous and annoyed when authors wrote about OC females dating him. One day, I accidentally encountered a story where Remus and Sirius fancied each other. Nothing graphic; simple emotions and a kiss. I thought, "Well...isn't that interesting?" It was like when you taste an exotic food and it's so strange that you aren't sure if you like it. I needed another bite to come to a decision. I looked for more about the two of them together and was shocked to find so many. I quickly realised what a perfect match they were.

However, I STILL didn't like Sirius. I adored "Sirius and Remus" as a match, but when you separated them into solitary pieces Sirius continued to bother me, though admittedly not as much as he originally did. I wanted to understand Remus' lover better, so I sought more stories specifically about Padfoot and from his first-person perspecive.

Finally, about two years ago, I decided that I liked Sirius. He isn't in my Top 10 HP characters, but I think he's nice to have around, and I will support Puppy Love until I die.

Well, I can honestly say fanfics have changed my thoughts on characters. The biggest change, was going from thinking Sirius and Remus could never be a couple because they were like brothers, and after reading a couple fanfics (ones that highlight and exaggerate the little moments between them in the books, like that "brotherly" hug in PoA) decided they would probably be the cutest gay couple ever. I actually found it disappointing that Remus married Tonks. It was crazy! Sirius and Remus have actually become one of my favorite couples, I love looking at fanart and reading fics about them since JK Rowling decided to kill Sirius and make Remus marry Tonks lol.
Also on the topic of Sirius, I changed my mind about him a lot. I used to think he was a good guy, but after reading fics based in the Marauder's time where he hurts Snape quite a lot, I decided he was no better then a bully. Then again, I read fics about Sirius and his abusive parents and changed my mind again, deciding he was just taking his anger out on somebody he knew couldn't really hurt him but in his mind was much like his own parents. He may have been a bully, but he didn't know any better. He was treating the people he hated the same way his parents treated him, most likely, without even knowing it. He was just a kid. Of course we know the hatred between the 2 stayed, that is just one of those things you hold on to. When you at one point hated somebody, it would just seem stupid to try and make up, it's the way humans work. Plus, we know Snape did hate Sirius, even if Sirius at one point realized he didn't really hate all Slytherins.
So, I say fanfics defiantly can change your mind about characters, especially well written and well thought out fanfics, the ones that actually seem like prequels and sequels.

I'm fairly open minded when it comes to reading the fics, so long as the characters make things make sense. I did read one that was in Cho's pov. I actually felt sorry for her, which I hadn't during the course of the books.
Matelia's story Cat, Rat, and Dog puts me in a better mood when thinking about Peter in the Marauder Era.

Fan fics did change my opinion of Snape. I never liked him before, and now I realize that he's just a broken soul that needs love heart .

Fan fics also changed my thoughts on Draco. There have been Draco/Harry fics I've read that were in Draco's point of view and it actually made sense that he was feeling the way he was...I guess I just understood him better.
