Being outside was definitely something Rachel considered a bonus. He didn't like being cooped up indoors, it made him feel caged and tended to be annoying. Today he had an excuse not to teach his student inside - he was to be continuing on a previous lesson she'd got, a flight lesson. Yay, finally something he was decent at.
The girl he was assigned to teach that day was a combination of Sloth and Chastity. Really, he didn't want to mess with the Chastity part - that just sounded dangerous to try and teach a kid either to be chaste or against being chaste. However, teaching her not to be lazy, that he could deal with a bit. Previously, Allete had 'learned to fly' but he was informed that had mostly been her flapping a few times and falling asleep.
Well, there was a pretty decent way to keep someone awake when learning how to fly - have not being conscious be a risk to their life. He had the strength and flight skill to be able to keep a student from falling to their death (he'd had to do that to a few students and their dragons before on several occasions) but this girl didn't need to know that. Her mother might (worrying parents needlessly tended to lead to trouble) but Allete didn't. He could take her up high, and have her work to stay up there. That might dissuade her from sleeping.......or not. Depended on just how strong her laziness was, really.
Oh well, he'd just have to wait and see. She should have been arriving about then anyway.

Not again! At least they were outside this time. Niki was once again forced to drag her daughter to where she was going to be learning how to fly.... again. Perhaps this new teacher would manage to succeed. The techs hadn't managed to do well at all.
Allete was still not happy about having to go back to the Seven of Seven building over and over again, but at least this time she was being carried in. Her mother had her over one shoulder and Allete could see the jeep getting smaller and smaller.... She sighed. Stupid classes. She had almost finished the boss fight before her mother had dragged her away. Now she'd have to start that fight all over again when she got home.
Niki smiled at the man, letting her daughter down, where the girl crossed her arms and stared at the man like 'Okay, what now?'. Niki sighed. Why did she seem to get mostly troublesome kids?!

"Your daughter is going to need to sit there and rest a few minutes while I inform you of the plan for the class. She's going to be needing whatever energy she can muster if she wants to get through this lesson unscathed, so I'd suggest she get it now. I need to speak with you anyway, Ms. Ledell." he informed Niki, after only a short moment of taking in both of their appearances.

Allete frowned at being ignored. She did not like this man already. And she didn't like the sound of this class either. Glancing at the two adults for a moment, the girl shrugged and settled down on the ground, out in a matter of moments. Hey, any time was good for a nap.
Niki just shook her head at her daughter, hoping the man could actually get her up when he was ready to start this class... Allete would sleep all day if she could get away with it.

He'd have payed more attention to Allete if he hadn't been eager to get this part of the session over with. Parents were always something Rachel had had trouble dealing with, particularly since he'd never had any of his own. He could be attentive to the girl when she was learning. For now, some things just had to be dealt with. Anyway, what'd he care if she liked him? He wasn't paid to be likable.
When Niki approached him, he bowed his head slightly before speaking. "My plan for today's class is more trying to get beyond your daughter's laziness, rather than actually teaching her to properly fly. I was informed that she didn't even get far off the ground last time before falling asleep."
It was then that he'd have to reveal how he'd have to teach the class. Oh dear.
"My intent was to take Allete up a bit higher in the air for the flight practice. That way, the belief would be that if she falls asleep, she'll be a world of pain and it might discourage her from doing that." he explained, tone calm but somewhat lower than usual so the preteen wouldn't hear, "I was a flight instructor at another location for some time and am experienced enough to be able to keep her from actually falling and getting hurt, should it come to that, but that hopefully will not be necessary."
Okay, now to see what sort of reaction he got. Seriously, this man must actually be crazy.

Niki chuckled at the first part, recalling the last class. "No, she didn't..." She grinned, though the grin slipped some as the teacher explained what was going to happen in the class. She didn't say anything for a while, glancing at the man and then at her daughter. Luckily for Rachel, Niki knew that something drastic had to be done about her daughter's habits. She was expected to learn how to fly and had been expected to learn so some time ago. It almost felt to her that Allete's failures were her own. After all, she was the girl's mother...
Finally, she sighed. He'd said she wouldn't be hurt... and he seemed to know what he was doing. "Uh... okay...." She stared at Allete, who was still quite out of it on the grass. Well, he'd said he was experienced... and if he'd been hired to do these sorts of things... "I just hope she learns... and fast..." She muttered.

Rachel nodded, "We shall see." he said calmly.
Walking over, the man knelt and lifted the practically unconscious girl, spreading his wings and flying higher with her. High over the ground, he held Allete and pinched her on the arm, carefully.
"Time to wake up, kid. You'll be needing to get your rear in gear or you might not live to play any more video games, or whatever it is you like doing." he informed her, voice strong and clear. They were too far up for Niki to hear, but he was definitely loud enough that the half dead Allete might actually hear and take in what he was saying.

Allete did NOT like being pinched, no matter how carefully it had been done. "What?" She snarled at the teacher, wanting nothing more than to go back to sleep. In fact, she almost had until what the teacher had said sank in and she actually opened her eyes to glare at him.
It was then that she realized just WHERE she was. "Huh?" It took her a moment to realize just how she'd got there. Wait... what was he going to do now?

Rachel looked down at her, his expression almost daring the girl to go back to sleep now. "You are at about 30 to 50 feet off the ground, at present. You have two options at present. Wake up the rest of the way and get to pumping your wings till you can actually use them for flight, or go back to sleep and plummet. Either way, I will be letting go in a short while so I'd suggest you take the first option if you value your health and your life."

Allete preferred the option of 'glare at you for doing something stupid like this'. Of course she could fly. She had wings. DUH. The fact that she actually HADN'T flown before didn't really come to her. Besides, flapping her wings was tiring. Took too much effort.... And she didn't really think the teacher would drop her... after all, he was supposed to keep her alive... right?

Slowly, Rachel's previously calm and daring look turned almost devious and he lightly loosened his grip on Allete, rising just a bit higher in the air as he did.
"Do you really want to test me? I've got very little to lose here. My life is of a lot less value to me than yours is to you. Flight doesn't just come naturally, and you're going to want to get to working those wings if you want to get out of this with the use of your arms at the very least."

Allete continued to glare at the man. He wouldn't... would he? Somewhere, somewhere small and deep down, she was afraid he actually would. And... would she be able to fly? Or at least prevent death?? With a sneer, she unfurled her wings and gave them a flap or two, almost sarcastically.

"Keep going." he said, tone still daring her not to believe that he'd drop her and loosening his hands a bit more. He actually was planning to - he'd catch her but still, she didn't need to know that. "You're going to want to flap more and more until you feel strong enough to pull out of my hands and stay aloft on your own. And when you get to that level, you'll have to keep it up to stay up here instead of plummeting."

Allete scowled. That sounded like work. She didn't like work. She glanced down. Perhaps this was NOT the best place to learn that you did not like heights... Or at least were not terribly fond of them. With a long sigh, she actually tried to flap her wings hard enough to keep herself up. She managed to support herself for a few moments before suddenly stopping. She looked almost exhausted from that small burst of action.

"Keep it up and you can get back to the ground. Once you're up on your own, you can probably just glide down. Gliding's much easier than flying, you just have to get to a certain point before you can glide." for once his tone was actually...reasonable and almost friendly? Which, it actually was.
He was required, as a teacher, to attempt to teach her something. As the kind of teacher he was, he required of himself to get her to put a tad of effort in. Other than that, he could care less. After she did that, she could go. It was getting her to that point that was the tricky thing. Just like with gliding and flying. You have to get to a certain point in flight before you can just glide.
