It was a bit weird, not having her sister in the same class as her, but somehow they had been separated. Kash was in gym while Rhye was in science. She wondered how her sister was doing as she lined up with the rest of the kids in front of the black skinned man wearing shorts and a t-shirt with their school logo over the breast pocket.
"Alright, kids," Shade said, clapping his hands. "Pick a partner. Today we're doing races! Starting with the three legged version." He held up ribbons. "Oh, it looks like we've got a new face, as well, so everyone be nice to--"
"Kashmira," Kash provided boldly.
"Kashmira," he repeated.

Nataya stood, figeting slightly. As much as she loved gym class, it was the one class she had to wear sneakers for. Gym was almost the perfect class; they got to run around and push themselves to the best of their ability. But, unfortunately, the evil of restricting, closed-toed shoes was required...
She looked up from her personal thoughts at the mention of a new face, glancing around. She felt a bit guilty; she should have noticed earlier. Her task was made easier as the girl spoke, making her location known. "Hello, Kashmira!" the little faerie sang out, flashing a smile over to the new student as she waved, her current "shoe'd" state forgotten for the moment. "Welcome to our class. Do you need a partner?"

"Um, yeah," Kash said, looking around before heading to the other girl. "I'm so used to having my sister around that I forgot to look, I guess. You can call me Kash," she added with a smile. "What's your name?"
She didn't have shoes on. She couldn't actually wear them with puppy paws for feet, but her parents had discussed having some made especially for her. She didn't really want them.

"My name's Nataya, but most people shorten it to Nattie or Nat." Nataya said cheerfully. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Kash." She noticed the girl's feet and, for a fleeting moment, felt a pang of envy. She was so lucky she got to go around without shoes on. But, just as soon as they'd come, she pushed the not-so-happy thoughts out of her head.
"So, have you ever run a three-legged race before?" she asked, sounding sincerely curious.

"Nope," Kash admitted. "I've only been grown for a day or two, to be honest." She shrugged. "What is it, anyway?"
"It's where I tie one of your legs to Nat's legs and you try to beat the other teams across the gym," Shade said. "Come stand over here, you two, so I can tie you together."

"What Mr. Shade said!" Nataya said, nodding before she elaborated a bit. "It's really fun, even if you fall or something! And it's fun to watch everyone else trying to win, too."
"Come on!" she said, eager to start. She skipped over to Shade, stopping a couple of feet infront of him.

Kash followed, wondering why she felt slightly uneasy about this race. She shook it off, figuring it would be fun, and held out one leg for Shade.
"Other leg, sweetie," he said as he knelt down in front of them. "The race is to that wall, there," he told them, pointing behind him. "And back. Then we're going to do the wheel barrel race."

Nataya smiled brightly, clapping her hands together once. In her head, she was sure they were going to win or, if that didn't happen, they'd atleast have a great time in the race! She was absolutely positive that nothing could or would go wrong. "The wheel barrel race is lots of fun, too! I'm sure you'll like it." she said, looking at Kash from the corner of her eye.

"I don't see any barrels," Kash said as she looked around. She was completely lost on how they would wheel barrels when there weren't any around.
"On your mark!" Shade said from the side. "Get set! Annnnddddd... waaaiiittt foooorrrrr itttttt--GO!"

"We don't use barrels," Nataya said, smiling slightly at the other girl. "I'll explain later." She readied herself as Shade counted down, scooting her free foot out to the side a bit, waiting for that one word. At "go", she put her free foot first, hoping that Kash was catching on to this as she started to pull her other foot, along with Kash's, forward.

Kash stumbled and fell flat on her face, grunting loudly. "Ow."

Nataya started to fall as the other girl's weight jerked at her leg, but she managed to catch herself on her knees. Yeah, that probably earned her a few bruises. "I'm sorry! Are you okay?" she asked, looking at Kash. She'd seemed to take a worse fall then she did.

"Yeah, I'm fine," she said, shoving herself to her feet. "Let's try this again," she said, wrapping her arms around the other girl's shoulder. "With counting? Like one, two, one, two?"

Nataya stood carefully, relieved that the girl wasn't hurt too badly. She smiled slightly, nodding as she put her arm around Kash's shoulder. "That's a good idea," she said, looking forward again. "Ready?"

"One for outside leg, two for inside, okay?" she asked, not about to risk falling like that again. "One," she said, stepping forward with her outside leg. "Two."
She could do this, she told herself. It wasn't as if she wasn't used to walking with someone right next to her all the time, after all! "We gotta hurry," she said. "Or we'll be last!"
