"So I'm supposed to wait here for someone to show up and then show them around the compound while answering any questions they may have. Sounds easy enough for a quick job."

Micajah stood waiting outside of the dorms, pretty sure that whoever he was supposed to be meeting would be coming from inside the building, and with a yawn he quietly contemplated how this job had gotten to him. He couldn't remember if it had been word of mouth that kids needed guides or an email from someone telling him he needed to get off his butt and meet more people, probably an email, but for some reason or another he was now out here and waiting.

Today the weather seemed to be a bit cooler than usual, what with the season of fall having already come upon the island and winter running close behind, and Micajah was dressed for it in a snug sweater that he had (proudly) knit himself earlier in the year. It was still large on his frame despite him growing enough to fill in more of it, but the dark green color looked good and made him seem older and a bit more mature. He wore his usual khaki pants and some comfy sneakers, and with another yawn he scratched the back of his head before getting his fingers stuck in his hair.

"I need to hurry and cut this. It's already past my shoulders."

He continued to chatter on to himself, clearly not paying attention to whether or not someone would be coming out of the building at any time.

Stepping out of the glass doors, carefully juggling a warm tall travel coffee mug filled with hot coco, came the student that Micajah was waiting for. Amber brown eyes glancing around, taking in the new sights, the strange sights, the unfamiliar things, young Wynn made his way out of the building, like a deer daring to step into the field. There was only one person out there waiting for him, so Wynn made his way over to him, calmly taking a sip of his drink. He had to make it last.

He had just flown into the school not only but two days ago and still he had not interacted with anyone else but the adults who shuffled him from place to place. He pulled the edges of his mouth, as if getting ready to smile or...maybe he wouldn't. The air outside was considerably warmer than his homeland, Wynn knew that, but he wore his jacket all the same. He even gave a shiver, as if the cold that he used to sleep on had embedded itself into his skin.

Quietly giving a throat clearing of noise to interrupt the other student's rambling train of thought, Wynn extended a hand and pulled gently at the hem of Micajah's home sewn sweater like a shy child.

Micajah's shoulders tensed for a moment as he felt the hem of his sweater get tugged, the pull only slightly enough that if he hadn't heard the clearing of a throat he probably would have never noticed for how deep he was into being an idiot in his own thoughts. He turned his head over his shoulder and caught a glimpse of a pair of brown eyes and he narrowed his own hazel ones before his face broke into a warm, friendly smile.

"Hey there. You must be Wynn, right? My name's Micajah, it's a pleasure to meet you."

He didn't turn as to knock the boy's hand off his sweater (he found it kind of endearing, actually), instead he merely rotated his shoulders enough so that his legs remained stationary but he could get a better view of the person who would be traveling around with him for the better part of the day.

"I'll be acting as your guide for the day so if you have any questions at all, be it about the school or anything else in general, feel free to ask. I think questions are a good way to find things out without having to rely on experience and accidents to teach you."

His meaning? Micajah wished someone had shown him around instead of allowing him to get lost day after day before he mastered the lay of the land. He still had some nightmares about ending up in places he most certainly did not want to be.

"Do you have any questions before we start?"

Wynn nodded his head at the affirmation of his name. This youth knew his name already, which was good. That meant that Wynn was in the right place with the right person. He kept his hold on the other boy's sweater, just a light pinch with his thumb and knuckle, and gave a small smile of his own. So far, the people of this strange new land were kind enough, almost as kind as the village back home. The people who took him here assured him that, that this place was like his village, just larger, with more people and more opportunities. It was a lot warmer too, but that didn't stop Wynn from shivering from remembered cold.

"For me as well," Wynn replied softly in his halting awkward English. He knew English well enough to speak it, but his accent was heavy and his choice of words reflected his heritage, "I wish to learn...why...why small ones, me and you, learn here. They told me good it will be for me here with what I do. Why could not my village come too?"

The questions were simple and innocent. It was evident that Wynn was not familiar with anything else outside his home. He was open to it, curious, and wondering, but there was a part of him that furrowed a brow at all these new things and questioned their validity and value.

So cute. He's...so cute.

When Wynn left his hand on Micajah's sweater even as he spoke the boy couldn't help but inwardly 'ahh' at the boy's actions. It made him wonder how old he was, or how old Wynn thought he was, but those thoughts passed when he knew it was probably nothing more then an accumulation of nerves at being separated from a place you had lived your entire life.

"Why couldn't your whole village come? Because they had to stay there so you'd have a place to return home to. If your whole village was here then you'd never have something to look froward to again, right? A chance to go back to a familiar place and see faces that you've been missing."

Micajah smiled softly as he thought about what to say, trying hard to sound reassuring yet not so troublesome at the same time. He didn't want the boy to think he could never go home but he also didn't want him thinking he could leave at any time. To his knowledge Micajah had never seen a boy leave the island for a trip home - ever.

"As for why we're here, isn't it so we can do what we want to do and somehow make things better for other in the process? I'm sure if we can succeed here and create something that changes the world for the greater good then coming here alone is worth it, don't you think?"

Alright. That made sense. Wynn relaxed his hold on the other boy's sweater so it was no longer a pinch, but just a gentle hold. He felt a little more comfortable now that the question that was itching at him was answered. Ever since his bags were shoved into his arms and he, in turn, was rudely shoved onto a bush plane on the icy turf of his homeland tundra, Wynn had been wondering when he'd see his village again. He had been dreading that he'd never go back. It was all so sudden that it didn't really feel like it happened.

But what Micajah said was reassuring, and that made Wynn a little more comfortable with this new place. He looked forward to seeing his village again.

"Told was I..." Wynn stated and then his sentence trailed off. He was suddenly distracted by a particular tree in the courtyard and his hold on Micajah's sweater hem released itself as Wynn moved away, like a leaf shifted by a stray wind. He trundled down the steps of the building and strode directly underneath a thin tree with changing leaves. Holding up his travel mug, Wynn took a sip of the drink and admired the unfamiliar arbor.

He continued his sentence, unabated by the change in scenery, "The earth need strong spirits, young spear holders, water weavers, earth growers, fire breathers, and wind tamers, to protect her. Lurk in the sky, something does, hungry. Dark." Wynn turned his amber eyes to Micajah, wide and wondering, making sure that he knew was right, "Yes?"

"You're talking about the invasion, right?"

Micajah had followed Wynn with idle steps, taking note as he listened hard to what the other boy was trying to say. As cute as Wynn's broken and slight primitive English speaking manner was, he still had to listen closely lest he miss something that was trying to be said and ruin any chances of the conversation progressing any further.

"And you're right, all of us were gathered here to prevent any more destruction from an invasion should another arise. Young men from around the world, ones with different talents in many fields, have all been gathered here in hopes to make us humanity's saviors. That means you're one of those 'savior to be's' and I am too."

By now he'd made it back over to Wynn's side and was standing with him, his eyes looking up at the tree having turned away from the companion next to him. Micajah wasn't too big on trees or nature, at least in terms of knowledge of them, since he didn't spend his time reading about things that weren't directly related to his interests at hand - like sewing. Or knitting.

"Do you want to start the tour now? I'm sure you'll see many other trees like this on the way, plus different things that you may not have seen before as well."
PostPosted: Thu Nov 13, 2008 5:53 pm

Wynn nodded his head slowly.

When Micajah said "savior" the title seemed a bit large, a bit too large for Wynn's humble roots. He knew of the invasion, the news being passed between adults while they worked in hushed whispers and gasps of exclamation. He was aware of what had happened, but that didn't mean that Wynn was all too interested in becoming a hero. He rather enjoyed the quiet life, the silence of the icy tundra and muffled sky. The youth didn't want anything else besides that.

But then again, he didn't know much beyond what he was familiar with.

He knew what he was told and he was told that he would be here, in this school, for learning and focusing his talents. Perhaps "savior" was a title that he could grow into.

Reaching for the hem of Micajah's shirt, he once again took hold and looked up at him readily, "Start. I want to see."

"Okay then, let's get moving."

Micajah smiled brightly and didn't say anything when his shirt was taken in hand, instead thinking to himself that he probably looked more like a parent leading a child who'd been scolded than a peer leading a fellow around to show them the place. If Wynn had been crying it would have only made the picture more complete and he probably would have been laughing instead of just smiling and walking on.

"The place you just came out of is the dorms, and it's got classrooms inside there too. You'll have your first classes here in order to get your basic learning down before you can even move on to a Science path or a Magic path."

He motioned back towards the building Wynn had come out of, taking care to talk over his shoulder so the boy could hear him clearly. While he knew how well the boy could speak English, proved by whenever he said something, he wasn't sure on how well he comprehended but it wasn't like Micajah to plan ahead and think this kid couldn't grasp all the words being spoken to him. He seriously doubted ShinKami would allow anyone onto the grounds that wasn't fluent in English, at least to the point of being able to understand it without any difficulty.

"I'm taking the Magic route, by the way. What are you going to try and go for?"
PostPosted: Thu Nov 13, 2008 7:21 pm

The youth took careful note of everything the other was pointing out to him. Already, Wynn had spent a great deal of time wandering around the main dorms, walking in the hallways, standing in corners, and passing through doors over and over again, just to get a feel for them, before he had come to meet up with Micajah. Things were in sensible places, so they were easy to remember.

As they walked, footsteps quietly plodding along on the pavement, Wynn noticed Micajah making a large effort to be heard and understood. It kind of confused Wynn, but then after some thought he understood. The other was assuming things based on his speaking abilities. While the English language was one that Wynn had barely gotten his tongue around, he understood it perfectly well after being raised in a village that had many English speaking people. It wasn't uncommon in the cold reaches of Alaska to hear English. In fact, it was more uncommon to hear Wynn's native tongue. Not only that, but Wynn's name was even Welsh, for earth's sake, as well as his last name! It was simply because of his traditional upbringing that he learned last the language of the white-skinned people in his home.

This assumption made a quirk of a smile play on Wynn's cheeks.

"Magic," the dark-skinned lad answered with the soft nod of his head, "Earthbound."

"Magic, is? I guess that means we'll be seeing more of each other after this tour."

Not that he was imply it was a bad thing. Micajah wasn't one to be social anyway, he liked his time alone in his room with needles and fabric and soda, but if going out meant he could meet more people and have conversations as easily as this one was going then perhaps it wouldn't be too bad. His social reputation would probably exist a little more if he did something like that, and a reputation meant maybe not eating alone anymore.

He continued up the path from the dorms, heading slightly southeast as he went along. Micajah was up for a stroll more than an actual walking tour and with the weather like it was if he walked too briskly he'd probably get sweaty and then whine about being cold after the first breeze came and blew around him; he wasn't wearing a shirt under the sweater, after all.

"The building to our left over here is the auditorium. I don't know if you've been in there or not yet but it's where we have meetings if something comes up. The teachers use it to check new students in too when the year starts, and a few days ago we had an open house for some new teacher hopefuls. I've only been in there once or twice, I think."

Micajah pointed his left hand towards a building that sort of loomed in the distance, his steps stopping so the other youth could take in the view before they moved along.

Despite how knowledgeable he sounded now Micajah wondered just how hard Wynn would laugh if he knew that the guy showing him around was probably the person on the island with the worst sense of direction known to man.

Wynn nodded his head, taking into account that this new person would be a regular face. He didn't mind it, nor did he look forward to it, he just accepted it as a fact. It would mean that he could have help if he were to get lost or to get confused over assignments. Wynn wasn't one who looked for companionship, but he didn't mind it, even though he was quite fine with being alone. Whatever position he fell into would be fine with him. He would adjust and embrace.

As they walked, Wynn kept the gentle hold on the edge of Micajah's clothing. He eyed the places that Micajah pointed out and took his time studying them, filing them away into his memory before he moved onwards. He noticed the auditorium, but he hadn't been there before. Micajah said that he might have to go there, so Wynn made a special note to remember that.

"Magic building?" Wynn asked, wondering where the building of his future would lie. "Food?"

"We can check out the School of Magic right now if you want, then cut out to grab some food before we continue with the tour. Or if you're really hungry we can go to the cafeteria first."

Micajah himself wasn't really that hungry, having eaten an apple before he came out to start the tour, but he could understand how someone else might be. He wasn't eating much lately thanks to his weird sleeping hours and his rather tight budget (spent too much of fabric and the like) for the month, so when he could snag a little meal here and there he did. If anything he could probably get something warm to drink, like a coffee or a cocoa, while he was there and bring it along for the rest of the tour.

"Let's head to the cafeteria first, since I think I could go for something warm to drink. I've heard they have some good hot drinks there, like coffee and hot chocolate."

He smiled behind him at Wynn and turned his body to change routes, straying off the path and going over some grass to where the campus food would be located.

"Yes," Wynn said, not really specifying which of Micajah's three plans he was casting his vote for. He simply glanced around all the while, his brown eyes taking in all the interesting sights and cataloging them in his brain. While hunger was on his mind, Wynn didn't really find it important. He hadn't eaten very much in the morning, considering his abrupt change in setting from Alaska to island, but then again, he didn't eat very much at all. Wynn replied mostly on his hot coco, which he figured was okay to drink in bigger sips since they were heading to the cafeteria. Lifting his hands, awkwardly trying to keep them away from Micajah's sight, he drank some of his coco in a long sip.

"I like hot chocolate," he admitted. It was probably the most excited he had been all day. His shoes crunched softly into the shoes as he passed through the grass and a happy lilt accented his steps.

"Really? I'm pretty fond it too, especially when it's very cold outside. It's not that cold today but a hot drink wouldn't do me any wrong to have, and seeing as you're enjoying yours I think it'd be a good idea to get one."

He hadn't had hot chocolate in a long time, to be more honest about it, and the thoughts of having one now with a new friend sounded like a good bonding tool...plus it would warm him up a little.

"I wonder if they have different flavored kind. You know, like peppermint or vanilla."

Micajah though it was kind of cute to see the spring in Wynn's step as they drew closer to the cafeteria, and he wondered if it was because the boy really like something that was in there or he was eager to eat some food and get on with the rest of the tour. Either way was fine with him, a stopover wasn't always a bad thing.
