i've always wondered when abouts SOUE was set. i'd guess about the 1970-80s. but the cars are just so old...

Er, I think someone before said there was no exact way of knowing...
besides, I don't recall knowing there has ever been an era like in the ASOUE, especialy with strange reptiles and the such, but I'm sure theres some relation.

There never has been any indication that it's the 70's or 80's, I don't think there's any defenite era. The clothing styles (in the books) don't belong to any decade, especially the wackier ones.

I always imagined it to be in the early 1900s. I guess it's because the technology isn't extremely developed, and with the organizations having to send messages, I'm sure they would use computers if they could. Maybe it's just me though.

I guess it's because the technology isn't extremely developed, and with the organizations having to send messages, I'm sure they would use computers if they could. No, I completely agree. It's always been my impression that it's been set in soome earlier time around the 1020's or something. Snicket uses a typewriter instead of a computer, and they actually focus on being "well-read", something that was more set in times like then, at least as far as I know. But it's still a general idea. I think that Snicket creates his own unique blend of time period traits for his own purposes, and I only wish I lived whenever that was... razz

Although there are some things that were really fake, like when they were with Uncle Monty, the description of some of his reptiles are a little extreme >.<
So I didn't really think that would give any clues to the time line.

Well the movie made an effort to give it a classical feel, which I didn't necessarily dislike, but it was far from how I imagine the actual timeline. Snicket has been very careful not to actually give a distinctive timeframe, but from references he's made I gather that it actually takes place in the present, or recently, like the 90s. They reference people like Martin Luther King Jr and Richard Wright, who both lived in the mid 1900s.
