A very fickle thing. They are usually seen as in the way and not appreciated or loved. And when they suck, they suck hard.
Their job is to get the crowd going but, I have very rarely seen one do that and do it well. They usually get glares and stares.
Why?

I think it's because the fans expect the actual band from when the doors close to when the open again and that it's a band that's not "refined" ehough to have a proper sound, hence that when they suck on one song, they suck and piss everybody but a good thing is when the actual band comes on the fans are relieved that happy hour starts the pit starts to go.

I've seen a few good openers. Just it's always the same.
Eh, If a band is good give them some love.

Last night the emo bs band Cromwell opened up for Turisas, and followed by them was the nu-metal band IronKlad. Everyone hated Cromwell, but Ironklad was at least entertaining. Things got good when Powerglove hit the stage, but it took a lot to get over how horrible Cromwell was, and how unsuited they were for the show.

this is a country song, but i feel it applies. you should always give the openers a chance, they work ******** hard.
You don't have a backstage room of your own You just have feedback in your microphone ‘Cause you don't get a soundcheck ‘Cause you're not worth the time You're gonna have to face it You're no better than slime You don't know me; I'm the opening act
There's a cold cut platter and beer for the crew Don't get the impression that there's any for you ‘Cause you're at the bottom of the pecking order Even the bouncer at the door comes before you You don't know me; I'm the opening act
The right attitude will get me such a long way An optimistic view will make it OK When some fool in the front row yells, “YOU SUCK!' I'll thank him profusely and get ready to duck
I don't have a hit in the Billboard charts I don't have a limousine that stretches three blocks Ready to take me from door to door Just like the a*****e I'm opening for He doesn't know me; I'm his opening act
Now I'm not going far so I don't wear a hat Tight jeans don't fit me; I'm a little too fat I can't sing like a frog blowing farts through his nose So I don't expect you'll like me, but that's how it goes
Now for 37 minutes I sang out my heart I was so damn nervous I just wanted to barf But this is my career and I'm paying my dues And if I ever get rich and famous I'll guess I'll be an a*****e too ‘Till then, you don't know me; I'm the opening act

I think it's a combination of 4 things:
1: People aren't warmed up yet, so nobody is pumped enough to show any real love.
2: Opening bands aren't who you came to see, so most people are just waiting for them to go away so the "real" band(s) can get started.
3: Since they know people didn't come to see them, I think opening acts seldom seem to aquire the comfort level onstage that the closing bands have.
4: Opening bands are usually simply inferior bands... that's why they're opening instead of closing. This is not to say that they suck, just that they are typically not as good as the main act.
All that said, I have seen some very good opening bands. Soilwork and Arch Enemy were both opening acts at shows I've been to, as were Black Dahlia Murder and Decapitated (before their drummer died). At the same time, I've seen some terrible openers too, and last Sounds of the Underground tour the show I went to had 4 bad openers before the real bands came out (10 band show).

To be honest it seems like most of te time, they're opening acts for a reason. They're just starting out, the may not have found their sound yet, etc.
