So I have a thing for fiction and fictional races. I hate playing humans in Dungeons and Dragons because I'm already a human...but I don't want to be. I Want to be special. I want...

These.

I've always wanted to be special, all my life. I never wanted to play the princess in distress, I wanted to be the girl that saves the boy with her bow, or a magic power. I wanted to be the Centaur archer that beat Robin Hood, I wanted to be the Vampire girl or a Werewolf. I wanted to be Matilda with powers. But I'm going to be 23 on Thanksgiving this year and I'll be 30 before I know it, but you know what? I want to get my ears done before then.

What would you get done? What doy ou think about body modifications? Sinful? Ugly? Fun? Too over-the-top? Inspiring?

Hm...no offense, but I think that's just silly. Especially at your age. Your out in the work world...or about to be...and employers will see your ears and not take you as seriously. It's cool that you like fantasy creatures so much. I know I certainly do, but it's a waste of your money to try to be something you're not. I actually feel that way about almost all body altering surgery. Boob jobs, nose jobs, they're just as silly. The only thing I can see that could have a point is when people with obesity problems have weight taken off. When it's a health issue, I can see it having a point. Or when children are born with horrible deformities that hinder something in their lives. Otherwise...I don't see the point. There's a point when you have to realize that...you're an adult now and fantasy is what it is, fantasy.

Did you really get those? How awesome!

See, I don't find this a problem because ears can be pointed due to genetics. If this is something you really wanted, go for it!!

I have tattoos and had a piercing...but that got infected. If I got anything crazy, I think it would be my teeth sharpened. Not all of them, but a few.

^.^

That would be rather hard to decide. I like myself for who I am and how I look already, If I could mod myself just for fun. I'd probably go no further than straightening my hair and making it pure white

Master of the Seas...

Your body is your body, but just remember it's permanent like a tattoo, just not as accepted in our society. People in our society are just close-minded (Gay marriage case-and-point) and will shun what they think is a tad out of the norm."People fear what they do not understand". It could also make getting a job more difficult as those people shunning you, could be the one considering hiring you. If the downsides don't outweigh the good sides, go ahead and make yourself happy.

My problem here is not with you wanting a body modification, anyone else who wants a body modification, or body modifications in general... my problem here is why you want one.

You said you want to get your ears modified because it would make you "special." I say that's a shallow and extremely superficial view of what "special" is. Being something special, in my mind, does not begin with changing something that has no bearing on your mindset, attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, or paradigms. Being special begins within - how you think, how you act, how you treat others. Simply changing some part of your body because you want to look special does not make you a special person - it makes you a sideshow.

Do you want to be special? Do you want to be the person who saves others from distress? Go ahead! Be that person! But what you have to realize is being that person does not start with some superficial change. If you want to be the special person who saves others from distress, you have to go save people from distress. Go into police work, social work, rescue work - there are tons of opportunities to help those in trouble. Hell, it doesn't even have to be that dramatic. If you were to simply walk up, sit down, and talk to the kid who sits alone in the lunchroom every day (a narrow example used to describe a broad style of people) - speaking as one of those kids - you would be more special than any amount of body modifications can make you.

You know Inune, I hadn't caught that in her post before, but you make a good point. Like I stated before. Body modifications shouldn't be done on a whim...just because...or whatever. Sure, it might be "cool" for a while, but it doesn't change who you are on the inside.

Not to step on anyone's toes here, but I think the same about tattoos. Unless they have some serious meaning behind them...I just don't see the point! A butterfly on your a** is not special or unique. I do have piercings...in my ears...more than most. I have two in each ear, plus a third in the cartilage of my left ear. I would go no further than that with piercings. Even the ones I have I've grown a little bored with.

Changing something more drastically than a pierce in my ear...I can't imagine how quickly I'd become bored with it. I'm not going to give myself the chance. I'm sure tons of people want something different, but as the saying goes "the grass is always greener on the other side." Sure, it might seem cool now, but once it's done, it's done...

I would never modify my body unless it was something I could take out. For example, my desire for fangs. I would never get my teeth sharpened for one reason. I'm only 15 now. So if I get a pair I can take off and put on whenever I want, I won't be stuck with something permanent that I'll regret when I get older. Not to say that having sharp teeth wouldn't be cool, I just wouldn't want to be 79 and have fangs. Also, I'll probably lose a few teeth when I get older anyways, so less teethe for the dentists.

Back to the point.... people who get body modifications such as fake breasts and Brazilian Butt Augmentations (they take fat and put it in your behind so you have a big a**) Those are things people might regret. Yeah, the double D boobs and the behind the size of a large ball are nice when you're young, but guess what happens when you get older? That's right, all nice and saggy. Can you say, Granny Bra?

The body modification in question, that falls under my category of "Ummmm". It's interesting, yes. But as a whole, it could become just something that you don't even notice after time. When I got my ear re-pierced, I was aware of it for a few weeks. Partially because I had to turn the earring so the hole didn't close up. Now, it's just something I've got. Same with my spiked collar. It's just something I've got. I've become accustomed to both of those things, I barely even notice them anymore, nor do other people. The moral of the story is: It's cool now, but after a while, you won't even notice the thing you wasted money on.

I agree you never know when you might change your mind and then what. Plus with society the oddest thing can cause you to loose a great career. Not for me but they are pretty wild to say the least. Not sure if I could date a girl with ears like that would make it weird to nibble on them.... rofl

I know a lot of businesses have restrictions on tattoos. My grandma used to work with a guy who had tattoos all over his body. He was a great guy! Sweet and normal, but anyone who saw him would probably be afraid of him if they based their assessment off of appearance alone. He told my grandma that when he got the tattoos he had to sign a waver saying that he was aware that they could affect his ability to get a job. (this was for the visible tattoos of course, like all up his arm).

Now, think about it. A business bases a lot of things off of appearances. A guy who is great at his job could apply, but if he has piercings all over his face, fangs, visible tattoos, etc...companies aren't going to think of him as a very good candidate.

I am aware that this is all superficial judgements, but unfortunately that's how the world is.

I don't think an ear modification like that would cause you to lose the shot at a job. If it really mattered that much, you could probably just comb your hair down to cover them (and hope you don't have a nervous tell of pulling your hair back behind your ear during the interview).

I think dating would be about the same; if it really made a difference in first-impressions, you could just comb your hair to cover them until someone had gotten to know you better and then it probably wouldn't matter as much. Then again, I might be basing that off of my own perspective where I....probably wouldn't even notice unless someone pointed it out. sweatdrop

I agree with Inune. Ear modifications arn't going to end the world. If you want to do it, go ahead. After all it's your body.

@ Inune - Well, let's put it this way. You are the head man/woman of a large company. If a person with ear modification [ specifically making your ears like an elf ] asking for a job that could represent the company at one time or another would you really pick that person over the other candidate who doesn't have the ear modification. The large company isn't going to risk making a misunderstand of what the company actually works to do.

Not only that, the economy isn't doing so well right now. So jobs are going to eliminate any red flags that may harm the business. The only thing I could think that may not really impact her in getting a job is if she wants to get something like make those masks in movies of monsters, or make Halloween costumes or something.

Also; I highly doubt simply having your hair down would work in dates. You would need ideal weather, [ no wind to move your hair ] and luck must be your side in case you are use to pulling back your hair

This does not mean I am saying that she shouldn't do it. If she sits down and really thinks about how it may effect her life one way or another, then I have absolutely no problem with her decision. [ whatever it may be ]

I was watching a thing on Animal Planet about extreme body modifications to look like animals. One guy had his tongue spliced, his face made to look like a lizards and his entire upper body as such. Yet he has no problems with jobs. Sometimes stuff like this gives attention, while not all of it is positive, then again how much stuff is positive for anything? The attention allowed him to get jobs, and be accepted. As long as it is what you truly want, and want with all your heart and know you will never change or want to change it then go ahead and go for it.
