Jace had accused him of separating himself from the others. Maybe she was right, Antony thought as he browsed through the books at Fakir's. He hadn't seen Ignacio since the incident with Rudolfo. He hadn't hung out with Jace until he noticed she was on the verge of breaking down. If he hadn't taken Casca and Polly to the class, he might have never even noticed.

He was such a b*****d.

He pulled one book out, flipping through the pages idly and looking at the pictures. The only good thing was, though, that Thanatos had been avoiding him since then. The only ghosts he had to deal with were the malignant ones that noticed his power.

Irelia had pulled her hair back in to a loose ponytail, and proclaimed that she was "heading out to search through dusty musty books". Wisp wasn't interested, and Jace couldn't hear her through her headphones.

Irelia shut the door quietly and breathed a sigh of relief.

Being a teen was. Different.

Clothes shopping was hell, because it took forever, but she sort of enjoyed it in a caustic sort of way. She found herself looking in mirrors more, and being aware of what she was wearing. It wasn't that she was trying to get attention. But. Well. She WAS a girl. And a girly one at that. Jace was probably disgusted with her but Irelia couldn't help it. It was as teen as tampons and bras.

Opening the door to Fakir's, Irelia forgot her prissy teen habits and jumped right in to the bargain bin. Full of old, discarded Readers Digest, it was more of a junk bin that a treasure trove, but Irelia loved searching for things old and rare and ancient. So far, she hadn't made the find of the century but she was going to continue to look.

Looking up from her treasure hunting, Irelia spotted a familiar face, engrossed in a book of his own.

Smiling to herself, she sidled up to him and leaned on him.

"Can I help you?" She waggled her eyebrows wildly.

"Hmm?" he asked, not quite looking up from his book. Then something seemed to click in his brain. "Oh," he said, closing the book quickly. "Irelia. You ah... still come here?"

Laaammmeee, but he'd just been thinking deep thoughts. It was hard to get back to small talk when one was thinking deep thoughts about how much of a b*****d one was.

Irelia shook her head and placed her hands on her hips.

"Of course I still come here! God, what the hell have you been doing?" Irelia asked, sort of shocked.

Of course, this was Irelia's way of making small talk.

"So... read any good books lately? Killed any new ghosts? Sown some seeds?"

Irelia snickered. Aging had turned her from being not funny to being not funny but dirty.

"The last time we met here was like. MONTHS ago. What were we doing again? was it that weird ghost incident?"

"I don't remember," he admitted. "I was probably possessed at the moment." He sighed, putting the book up. "You look... good," he added, not replying to the seed comment. "You've been living with the Darnells?"

It was awkward. Yeah, that was the word. It was easier to deal with them when they were kids, there were less hormones going on. He had realized that with Rory, as well.

"You're only saying that because I'm not the uncomfortable height of your groin," Irelia said breezily, waving her hand dismissively, "Besides, gossip says you're hitting on one of the other girls. Not like there's much competition for you. Alpha male, eh?"

Irelia elbowed Anthony.

It was weird, being of a similar age to someone that always seemed to tower over her, in age and height. And now they were the same age. And while she was still much shorter than him... it wasn't by a lot anymore.

The weirdest thing about being a teen, Irelia had to admit, was that her hold on her emotional state was completely strained. It wasn't bad, really, it was sorta freeing, but it led to some uncomfortable thoughts that she recognized from her earlier days of reading minds willy-nilly. While she would dearly enjoy to hear what Anthony was really thinking, she had made a promise not to use it anymore. And she felt it was better that way.

"Hitting on?" he repeated. "Do you mean how I took Jace out to get ice cream and showed her how to use a dagger? Or how I met up with Delilah in the park?"

He didn't see how that was hitting on them, though. Lately he tended to take anyone out for snacks that was around. "I remember buying you a book, once," he added, flipping through his book. "I hardly see how that qualifies me as an alpha male."

Although come to think of it, he had been surrounded by females a lot lately. And Iggy. Well, s**t... don't tell me that hanging out with Iggy consists of hitting on someone as well!

"Mmmm. You are toying with their fragile hearts." Irelia smiled and turned away, back to browsing the books.

"I haven't seen you around all that much, I've been studying pretty hard. History is a piece of cake but Pre-Calc? Harsh."

Irelia let the silence mingle with the dust and then exhaled sharply.

"You are impossible. I cannot be the chatty, annoying one. Lets go do something EPIC. I dunno what. Like. Break in to a deserted warehouse and tell ghost stories- wait. There really would be ghost stories. Uh-" Irelia was still used to kid stuff. She had to think hard of what they could do that wouldn't lead to a lot of conversation.

"Oh yah! We should go to a movie! Animated dog, sucky sparkle vampires or christmas babies barfing?"

He blinked. "Such great choices," he drawled. "I choose anything other than the sparkly vampires," he told her, putting the book he was holding back into place. "I mean, seriously, I can handle dogs and babies, but vampires are not supposed to be sparkly. Unless, perhaps, they're frying at the time?"
PostPosted: Sun Nov 23, 2008 8:05 pm

"Aha! That means we will of course, HAVE to see the sparkle vampires that you so detest. We will buy popcorn to throw at the screen. And at the other teens making out. For this is a solemn mission." Irelia schooled her face to seriousness.

"Come onnnnn its supposed to be retardedly bad. And Wisp already saw it (the traitor) so now I have no one to go witttthhhhhhh."

That was SO not what he wanted to go see, but he sighed. "Okay, okay, fine, but I refuse to see the sequel," he swore. At least sober, that was, his little father influenced mind added. He did watch too much BBC. It was proven.

"Do you know when it starts?" he asked, glancing at his slender, discreet gold watch.
PostPosted: Sun Nov 23, 2008 8:14 pm

"Ha! Success! And you know that buying a ticket to the first is the gateway to the sequels so you will, in essence, cause a second one to be released. And then it will be your duty to watch it, to see what terror you had a hand in."

Irelia looked at her cellphone (a silver razr), "It doesn't start for an hour and a half. Meetcha there?"

Irelia started walking out, and threw her hair back as she went. Turning slightly, she heaved a dramatic sigh.

"Should've held out longer, Anthony. I was willing to wager over the shirt touching you know."

"Sometimes," he said, "I do like to at least pretend to be a gentleman."

Which was when the time came around he was waiting patiently in front of the movie theater with two tickets in his hand. He glanced at his watch again, trying to ignore the curious look of what seemed to be every sixteen year old girl in the city. He should have never bought the tickets on his own, he thought. He should have shoved Irelia forward, saying that his FRIEND desperately wanted to see it--
PostPosted: Sun Nov 23, 2008 8:30 pm

So, Irelia was friends with Anthony. That had always been true. But at the same time, Irelia knew that she had always sort of desperately thrown herself on him, especially before she really sort of clung to Jace. She thought it was because she had no real friends.

Now she knew better.

She didn't really remember anything about the time in the Library, at least nothing concrete, but a moment seemed fixed in her head of a boy telling her he was sorry. And an overwhelming feeling of sadness. She felt that sadness any time that she felt lonely and hungered for companionship at all times. So what if she was acting sort of loose and wild, though she was for all appearances about 14? Its not like no one else her age acted like she did.

Irelia pulled on her boots, the zipper making the satisfying noise zippers do. Her cumbersome feet had relaxed and though shaped odd, she could hide them in shoes now. Her clothing still consisted of dresses, which had seemed cute when she was small but now made her appear a lot older than she was. She picked a roaring red one, and threw her trench overtop. And promptly climbed out the window, even though she had already told Bea she was going out. The way she was dressed, Bea would never ever let her out. Even with straight as nails Anthony.

Arriving at the theatre, Irelia waved at Anthony, his pale visage very easy to pick out of the crowd. Smiling at the other girls, who stared at her (well, them but Irelia was somewhat vain) Irelia grabbed Anthony's hand.

"Its about to start and we don't want to miss a SINGLE MOMENT."

He blinked, then blinked again, his jaw dropping slightly at the red dress. Dammit, he thought, when had he gotten himself into this sort of thing, and was it possible to get out?

But he said nothing, gamely letting her drag him into the theater, hoping that no one from school saw them. "It's ah, theater 3," he said, once he regained control of his tongue.
