Israfel stood quietly on the bank of the lake and stared out absent mindedly across its calm waters. He wasn't thinking of anything in particular other than the things that had happened to him since he had made his first and only friend with a mare named Aly. He hadn't made any friends since then not that he had really tried to make new friends. A lot had been happening and he hadn't let the teepee in quite sometime. Today was the first he had been out on his own in a long while.

Mali grazed tenderly over the crisp grass, nosing away autumn leaves from the still green grass beneath. It was a cool day, the sky bright and cheery, yet storm clouds loomed over the distant mountains. She was paying little attention to where she wandered that day, letting her nose and stomache guide her and enjoying the freedom that the day presented. Many days she was kept busy with her human, an older medicine woman who often relied on her for daily tasks. Today however her human was off at a elders meeting and Mali was happy to be doing what she pleased. Drifting out of her musings she realized she had grown quiet thirsty and pointedly made her way towards the glimmer of a lake in the distance.

The white stallions ears flicked as the breeze played with his mane. He looked up towards th moutains and noticed the storm clouds loomed over the land. A few of the leaves surrounding the pond blew past his feet and he shivered a bit. it wouldn't be long before the lands would be blanketed in white. He knew his grandparents would be starting to get anxious for the snow to get here as they were Soquili of the Holidays and this was their favorite time of year. Israfel's thoughts were interrupted by his stomach growling. He chuckled at himself as he bent down to take a bit of the sweet clover that was beneath his feet.

Mali passed through the stand of trees that cast their shadow onto the lake. Reaching the shore she lingered at the last patch of trees, twitching her ears and snuffing at the air hesitantly. Her eyes darted around, a glimmer of white and red on the water catching her attention. Forgetting the thought of a drink she paced slowly around the edge of the lake, hoping for a better look. A stallion came into her gaze, just a little further around the lake. She watched him silently wondering who he might be. She had never got to spend much time around stallions since she left her family. I could just talk with him... I've never been good at talking with them... he wont want to talk to me. just go say hi. what if he laughs at me? She let out a sigh and flicked her long tail against the trees, agitated with herself. Do something! Tensing herself as she looked around she suddenly slammed her front hoof down onto a large branch, breaking it in half and letting out a loud CRACKing noise that echoed around in the trees.

At the snapping of the branch, Israfel's head snapped up immediately, ears swiveling in attention. He scented the breeze checking for any danger and his eyes searched around the lake. He then spotted a dark shape across the lake. He relaxed seeing that it was a mare and that he wasn't in any immediate danger though he was rather curious about her presence there at the lake. He wondered if she had just wondered there and accidently stepped on the branch or did it on purpose.

Watching the stallions reaction Mali stood her ground amongst the trees. As he looked back at her she pondered the situation again. She could pretend she didn't break the branch on purpose, just smile at him and carry on her way. Or, now that she had his attention she could go over and talk to him. She wasn't very good at awkward situations though. Just grow up and go talk to him, she prodded herself, you're a grown mare, you should be able to talk to whoever you want!
With that she took a step out from the shelter of the trees. It was just a step at first but then, pulling up her courage, it developed into a full out gallop and she found herself quickly approaching the stallion. As she got close enough for words she blurted out "Hello there sir!"

Israfel watched as the mare took a step and then started galloping his way. This was rather curious to him as it seemed that she hesitated on whether or not to come over to him. But from this distance he wasn't sure. He waited for her to come closer and then heard her call out to him. "Hello!" he called back and smiled to her. It didn't seem as if she was there to cause him any harm or trouble. He waited for her to come closer before saying anything more.

She galloped up to him, coming to an abrupt stop at his side. She turned to look at him face on, her quickly coarsing blood gave her new energy. "Hello" She said again repeating herself. "I'm Mali" She looked at him intriguingly. "I was just out for a stroll you see... and well I saw you here... I felt I should come and say hello." Her eyes darted away quickly as if she were having a moment of doubt but quickly refocused back onto him. "What are are you doing out here?" She asked him rather forwardly.

He stood there a bit surprised at her forwardness and energy. He turned so her could face her and smiled. "Hello, I'm Israfel. It is a pleasure to meet you Mali." he said chuckling as he listened to her tell him why she was there. "I was just here to think and get away from my teepee for awhile." he replied answering her question without minding. She was only the second or third Soquili he had met before and it was nice to meet someone new.

"Oh I hope I'm not disturbing your thinking Israfel... That's an interesting name." She smiled at him, tilting her head slightly. "I don't get much time away from my human... It's nice to spend some time alone." Her eyes darted over him as she talked, taking in his brite colors. "Well I guess not really alone... I'm glad to run into someone." She sniffed at him. "You live with other soquili don't you? Its just me and my human..."

He chuckled at all of her eager questions. "No your not disturbing me at all. You have a very nice name as well." he replied smiling again at her curious face. He too looked her over as he had never come across many dark colored Soquili. She had a few simple markings here and there as well that stood out brightly. "I don't get much time away from my teepee either. I live with my grandmother, father, and half-brother along with a few others that have come upon our little herd. It gets very loud and crowded there sometimes and its always nice to get away from that for a bit." he told her. It wasn't as crowded lately since three of the Soquili he lived with had gone off on their own for awhile.

She listened intently to his story. "Wow thats quiet a big family you have. When I was a little foal I lived with my mother and father and my sister and my brother." She paused, to think of them, "I'm not sure I remember them very well now... I was gifted to a medicine woman who didn't have any soquili of her own. She's nice but she always keeps me busy, she needs a lot of help with things, but I don't mind helping her out." She nodded. Her gaze had drifted off in thought but now it turned back to the stallion. "Do you get along well with your family? I think I rather miss having other soquili around, especially my sister... she probably doesn't miss me though." She chuckled lightly, remembering the tricks she used to play on her sister.

He chuckled again and nodded. "Yes, it is and those are just the family members that I live with. There are more of them and I don't know them all very well. The ones I do know, I get along with pretty well." he said as memories came back to his mind of growing up. "My half-brother and I squabble sometimes. I am sure your sister misses you like you miss her. I have a sister as well that I don't see often and I miss her." he replied.

Mali sighed. "I think I should go and visit them soon... its been too long since I've seen my family." She wrinkled her nose "I think I'm a bit scared to talk with them again...I wonder if they've had any new foals... or maybe my siblings have had foals of their own, how strange would that be!" She said with a laugh. "I can't imagine them all grown up with familys of their own." She tilted her head towards him "Are there any foals in your teepee?"

Israfel smiled at her gently. "Don't be afraid to talk to them again. They are your family and I am sure they all miss you very much." he said trying to cheer her up. His family was very close and tight knit even though they were so large. He wasn't sure about what her family was like but he liked to think that most families were like his own. "There aren't any foals at my teepee at the moment. Though two from my herd have disappeared. I've heard the one is off exploring caves with a stallion friend and the other, who knows what she is getting into." he replied shaking his head. It wouldn't be a shock to him if the one just showed up with foals since she was prone to flirting and getting into that kind of trouble.
