The green shapeshifter tossed and turned restlessly in his sleep that night, sweat soaking through the single thin sheet draped over his athletic frame in the darkness as he sub-consciously clung to his pillow, making small whimpering sounds as he dreamed.
In his mind, he saw again Terra in the cavern, looking up at him through tear-filled eyes and saying that it was never too late. If he could have, he would have taken Terra in his arms and made her believe that sacrificing herself wasn't the way; that they could go somewhere else as a group of six people elsewhere from Jump City. Or maybe they'd be able to rebuild the city after the volcano erupted - yes, maybe they would be able to create anew a better version of the old.
But no; he knew that he would never be able to convince her otherwise. And so, in that one moment in Terra's embrace, Beast Boy had forced himself to let her go.
Light flashed somewhere in his mind, and he found himself standing on a platform in the center of a huge spotlight. To his left was a figure hidden in shadow - he knew immediately who it was.
"What have you done with her?!"
He demanded, baring his teeth.
A low chuckle resounded from the masked figure in the shadows, and a gloved hand pointed over to a glowing rock formation to Beast Boy's right. The shapeshifter felt as though the breath had suddenly been knocked out of him; he saw the pained expression frozen onto Terra's face, the same expression that had been there when she'd given herself in a sacrifice.
"Do you want her back?"
Slade hissed.
Beast Boy fell to his knees as tears clouded his vision.
"Yeah,"
he whimpered softly, burying his head in his hands.
"Be my apprentice, Beast boy, and you can have her back."
He raised his head to look at Slade, hardly able to make out the outline of his mask in the darkness.
"...What?"
"You heard me."
"Well, yeah, but..."
"It's the only way. You honestly think that your other friends will help you find a way to get her back? It's been over a year, Beast Boy. If they really wanted to try to get her back, don't you think they would have done it by now?"
Beast Boy didn't answer. He only tightened his jaw and clenched his fists, shifting his gaze to the ground.
"Fine."
He said shakily, furiously blinking back the tears that again clouded his vision. He was well aware of all that he was giving up - but if he could have Terra back, it was worth it.
"Excellent. Meet me at the dance club tonight at ten; you know where it is, don't you?"
After a defeated sigh, Beast Boy replied,
"...Yeah."
Beast Boy woke up screaming, sitting bolt upright in his bed. Sweat mixed with the tears falling freely down his cheeks now; he wasn't sure if it had been a mere dream or if it was some weird mind communication that Slade had caused - either way, he wasn't about to wait around to find out. He resolved in his mind then and there that he'd be going to the club that night as had been instructed; he could easily make up some excuse to Robin and know that the Boy Wonder would believe him.
"I'm gonna get you back, Terra,"
he whispered softly to the darkness, just as his door slid open and someone walked in.
Raven hadn't even taken the time to pull on a cloak over her costume.
"I heard you screaming,"
she explained calmly, as though she was only investigating with the interest of one who might be interested in a flea hopping about on their floor.
But no, that wasn't the case at all; Raven had been rudely awakened by shocked and strained waves jerking rapidly from Beast Boy's aura moments before; it wasn't difficult for her to sense the green-skinned shapeshifter as it was, and irregular patterns such as this could wake the dead - so to speak.
"Yeah,"
Beast Boy admitted with a small sigh, rubbing his hand along the back of his neck in a nervous manner.
"Just a...a really bad dream."
Raven nodded in understanding, folding her arms casually across her chest as she studied him.
"You sure you're alright?"
she inquired in a soft, low tone.
"I'm fine."
Beast Boy yawned and checked the digital clock on the wall across from the bed: 4:13 a.m.
"You should go back to bed, Raven,"
he told her, turning his gaze back to the ivory-skinned telepath.
"I'll be fine, I promise."
As though it would help, he shot her a reassuring smile.
Raven nodded again and turned to leave without another word, allowing the door to slide shut behind her as she walked back to her room. She knew she wasn't going to get any more sleep that night; but she would meditate instead. A strange feeling of unease had her suddenly restless, and she had no doubt in her mind that a few hours of meditation before the others woke up would prove beneficial.
