User Image The wanderer of a lion grimaced as limped his way across the savannah. Keeping himself low, his yellow-brown coat blending almost flawlessly with the dried grass, he tried not to draw any attention to himself. The last thing he needed was some greater hunter spotting him and trying to take advantage of his wounded state.

Particularly because he had incurred the injury so lamely, he felt the irony of getting eaten for it would just be too much.

He hadn't been doing anything dangerous, or even strenuous. He had actually just woken up and, rolling to his feet, had managed to stumble over the remains of his dinner the night before. That had just been a warning, however, and as he mulled over just missing that catastrophe he slipped in a pile of something's excrement while trotting to the local watering hole. He had managed to twist his ankle.

And he smelled, despite how hard he had tried to clean his paw in the water hole, on grass, and with anything he thought might smell better. Heaving a sigh, he took a moment to pause and let his foot rest, holding it up as he looked around.

The morning had more or less been a good one for the femme, having caught a sizable prey for breakfast despite how early she woke up. It more than made up for the missed meal the night before, anyway. There was a light breeze, and the numerous clouds in the sky blocked out the sun and provided a sort of shade for the traveling cheetah. She wasn't much for believing in any higher beings, but if they really did exist...well, they were smiling down on her today.

She glanced skyward, a grateful smile on her maw, and closed her eyes as a breeze swept past her. It would've been a rather pleasant moment, however the breeze seemed to carry a rather unpleasant smell. Her smile turned into a sort of disgusted frown as she looked down and around her for any sign of the source of the smell.

With no source in plain sight, she hesitantly decided to follow her nose, and soon enough spotted a lion not too far off. It was a bit hard to spot since it blended almost perfectly with their surroundings. But when she squinted she could see the lion's figure well enough. The smell seemed to come from that general direction, but she wasn't sure whether she should approach it or not. Not that she was scared or anything...just, she wasn't sure if she could handle the smell without saying something that wasn't all that rude.

The femme sighed and padded toward the lion, making sure to make her presence known so that she wouldn't catch the other off guard. The last thing she wanted to do was unintentionally surprise a lion..

Hadaya sighed. He felt nauseous from dragging this scent around with him. He certainly wasn't going to try to clean it off the conventional way, and nothing else had worked. He couldn't be too rough with cleaning it, either, because it did hurt, and he wasn't the best with pain. He could take bumps and bruises well enough, but anything that hurt more than when he ran into a tree, or fell down, was harder for him to manage. Persistent pain, then, like this twisted ankle, was enough to ruin his day.

Still holding his foot in the air, he spotted something moving toward him. From its gait he could see that it wasn't stalking him, though his fur bristled defensively nonetheless. Standing up, putting his paw down despite the pang it shot through his leg, he tried to look as tough as his small, lanky frame would allow. He was a growing lion, after all. That had to mean something.

"Hello?" He said, not usually the first to speak in a meeting, but feeling obligated to here. He had watched what he now recognized as a cheetah walking up to him from a distance, after all. It would be weird to let her reach him without saying anything. "Do you... need something?"

Naya didn't stop walking even though it had said something to her. She wasn't worried that he would run off, since he could've done that as soon as he saw her. Her reply to his question was a gentle shake of her head, and when another breeze went by she couldn't help but make a face at the smell that it carried over to her. The femme made a sort of face, but hoped that he didn't notice. "There's a smell coming from over there.." she finally said, rubbing her nose a little bit to get the smell to go away. "I was downwind of it so...I decided to change directions." It wasn't entirely true, but if it made him less cautious then why not?

Hadaya frowned.

“There’s probably a smell coming from this direction too…” he said miserably, heaving a sigh. “I’m sorry if there is… I uh… had some poop problems. Wait! I mean, not MINE. No. Oh God. Wait, that’s… uhm. Sorry. I stepped in… and. I mean.”

He couldn’t decide if telling her how he had hurt his ankle was more embarrassing than just leaving his statement alone. He looked like he was on the verge of panic, and his friendly eyes were darting back and forth, trying to find some kind of escape route. Muscles coiled, he wondered if his leg would allow him to spring away if he managed to embarrass himself even further.

“That’s not what I meant. I’m sorry. Are you… uhm. I mean. Hi. I’m uh… I’m Hadaya. Sorry.” At this point, he didn’t even know what he was apologizing for.

She giggled at his nervous reply, walking once more toward him. She took a seat when she thought she was close enough, and smiled gently at him. Naya took a few moments to examine the male, and she noticed two things. He wasn't fully grown, and one of his ankles was bigger than the others. So she managed to piece his fragmented sentences together. While it was funny, and she couldn't help but giggle again, she knew better and forced herself to stop. He seemed embarassed enough as it was.. "No need to apologize," she said. "We all have our bad days. I'm Adannaya, Naya for short." Her eyes moved to his swollen ankle worriedly and she frowned. "If you're not careful it won't heal properly.."

Hadaya stared at the ground as she giggled at him, glad for his yellowish brown fur. Without it, or if it were a softer color, she might have been able to see how furiously he was blushing. He sniffed and nodded when she introduced herself, looking up and offering her a smile. He was long and lanky, but still not too large for a lion. Particularly not one of his age. Of course, he wouldn’t complain. He was just glad his mane had grown in at all. He had always been worried he would be without one.

“Hello, Naya…” He said, clearing his throat and trying to sound less pathetic than he felt. He lifted his paw up when she mentioned it, looking at it worriedly. Prone to expecting the worst, he instantly saw himself limping around for ever. And always with the lingering scent of excrement. It was an awful future. His imagination often brought him worse visions than his ‘gift from the Gods’. At least he could always distinguish between the two. Or at least… he thought he could.

“I have lots of bad days,” he thought he’d share, “I’m so lame. I wish I hadn’t hurt myself, I don’t know what to do with it now. It, uhm… smells not so good… but… I don’t want to… uh… so… what brings you out here?” Hadaya: expert topic changer.

The cheetah femme smiled encouragingly at the other, who, after another string of fragmented sentences, seemed to have a very low self-esteem. She could relate, somewhat, though she grew out of it with the encouragement from her brothers and sisters. He didn't seem to have that conveniently lying around though, so she thought it best to be as encouraging as she could be. "I had an uncle who thought the same," she said, leaning in a bit to get a better look at his paw. She held her breath.. "About the being lame and stuff, I mean. Until he met my aunt. Your luck will change someday too, I'm sure." The femme pulled back, unable to hold her breath much longer, and she let it out slowly so it would go unnoticed. "Have you been walking on it all day?" she asked, her voice taking on a motherly tone.

“When I meet your Aunt?” he offered with a goofy grin. Trying not to laugh at his own joke, he shook his head, then changed direction and nodded, “I hope so. I mean. It has. I have a new family, and a pride, and it’s pretty great. I’m happy, I’m just… still… working on the lame thing. Bad luck, or karma, or something. Ha. I don’t know.” He shrugged his lanky shoulders, though his smile fell.

He looked at the ground, a child caught, “yeah… I mean, I’ve been trying to take it easy, but I don’t like staying in one place and… sorry…”

He frowned at the earth, then looked up at her and offered a thin smile, as if to disarm her, “but I think it’s feeling better? Maybe it’s just a little tweaked, is all. I… appreciate the concern though…”

She smiled again, glad to see that despite his state he was still willing to offer a joke or two. She hardly knew him at all, but she predicted that he'd wriggle out of his so-called 'lame' self sooner or later. "Just keep hoping for the better, I suppose. It'll come eventually." And her thoughts went back to his injury, and her frown returned. She leaned in (and held her breath) again and touched the ankle, doubting that it was just a 'little tweaked' if he'd been walking on it all day. "It's probably twisted, so it'd be best if you stayed off of it for a while." Naya thought for a moment, wondering how she was to ensure that he got home safely without injuring his ankle any more than it already was. "Um...you're part of a pride, right? Is it nearby? Maybe I could take you so you get there safely. There are a lot of ruthless ones around here, you know.."

He winced when she touched his ankle, though he tried his best to mask it. Not knowing what could easily be played off, he went for the first thing that popped into his head: a sneeze. It was a forced, completely fake sneeze that he couldn’t even pretend to believe, and held no hope of her buying. It was also way too high pitched, to match his girly gasp of pain, and he shook his head too emphatically. Nearly wobbling off his three legged perch, he moved his paw as if to catch himself and managed to place it with some force on her front paw.

The pain he experienced trying to hide is previous gasp was enough to elicit a yelp he couldn’t hope to hide. Looking thoroughly abused and shattered, he leaped to his feet, three of them anyway, and turned to run away. It was his natural instinct, though he was trying to overcome it. He stopped himself, turning back around suddenly and answering her questions in a rush of words.

“I live by the water, but I wander a lot so I’ve been sleeping out here in the rogue lands, so I don’t have a home right now to go back to because it’s pretty far away but I appreciate the offer and thank you for your kindness and your help and now I’m going to go okay I’m sorry about stepping on your paw bye.”

And then he turned again and skittered off.

Naya blinked, the run-on sentence reaching her ears, though her mind didn't really have a chance to register the words. "Um...okay, take care?" she answered...sort of. With a gentle shake of her head she stood up and turned around, heading back toward where she had come from earlier. With the smell gone now, it was hardly an issue to be walking downwind. She sighed deeply as she looked back, watching his brown pelt disappear into the distance. She was worried, sure, but something about him told her that he would be fine. Or...she hoped?
