// fel essences Let's get right down to business! These are my fel essence ideas~ Strange how laughter looks like crying with no sound -- and raindrops taste like tears, without the pain... - Queensryche // Another Rainy NightQuote: Name: Depolarized Water Description: This water seems to have lost its properties of cohesion. The vial is filled with a mist that remains in eternal suspension: the water inside despite remaining at room temperature refuses to collect in the bottom of the vial. If frozen, the droplets ping off one another like magnets, refusing to remain close to one another -- conversely, if heated, the mist seems to settle and simmer in the bottom of the vial like normal water might. I wonder what caused this malfunction? How it happened: This strange water was collected as rainwater after the storm from the leaves of the fallen Tree. I dream of rain / I dream of gardens in the desert sand... - Sting // Desert RoseQuote: Name: Desert Rain Description: Rainwater is usually liquid, right? Well, this essence is instead a softly glittering powder heaping delicately in the vial. It shines softly when the light hits it, and if you look at it from the right angle, it refracts images as well, though it acts more like terribly fine sand. When it is disturbed, it splashes like water, clinging in drops and beads to the glass and then subsiding into shimmering dust, cooling the vial. Somehow, even when exposed to heat or cold, the temperature and state never changes... still, a tiny tendril of green life appears to be pushing its way up through the strange substance... How it happened: This specimen was collected from a hollow worn deep in a sandstone ledge, where it had been resting for a long time in the hot sun. It is believed that the storm's lingering effects denatured the rain and taught it to behave like the sand all around it, so that it fell as this fine powder, which was then covered with sand and lost forever -- until the cache in the stone was found.

// lost souls These are the souls I wish for each essence concept. Quote: Essence: Depolarized Water Species: Common Raven - Corvus corax principalisPersonality: Common ravens are extremely versatile and considerably opportunistic. The raven has coexisted with humans for so long that in some places it is considered a pest, with a lifespan of between ten to fifteen years in the wild, but in captivity, lifespans up to forty years have been recorded. Ravens have been recorded as being highly intelligent problem-solvers, and deeply curious when young. Young ravens are also one of the most playful of bird species, often seen sliding down snowbanks or playing catch-me-if-you-can with dogs or wolves. Young ravens in particular engage in courtship, and are fascinated with round, shiny objects that resemble eggs. X - Wikipedia on Ravens X - Symbolism of Ravens -image soon- Quote: Essence: Desert Rain Species: Betta splendens, Blue Veiltail morph Personality and Characteristics: Betta fish are what is often referred to as Siamese fighting fish or plakat (biting fish) for their highly territorial, possessive, often aggressive antics. They are anabantids, meaning that they breathe through labyrinth organs that process oxygen from the surface of the water. Males morphologically often have longer, showier flowing bright fins than the more muted females, and captive breeding of the betta has resulted in several true-breeding tail shapes, including the veiltail that is relevant here. The veiltail shape is characterized by a non-symmetrical shape that drapes and flows along only two rays. As far as personality, as stated, betta fish can be remarkably similar to any 'pet'. They can be pleased to see you, and react visibly by puffing out their fins and shimmying before the tank, and they can enjoy even being gently petted at the surface of the water. However, due to their possessive and territorial nature, a male betta does not do well in a tank with another; they will fight to establish dominance until the loser is vanquished or hides himself. They will even attack a mirror placed in their tank.

// created beauty This is the concept for the Raevan itself for each essence idea.
Quote: Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December, And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. - Edgar Allan Poe // The Raven Name: Apollinaris / Rook Gender: Male Fel Essence: Depolarized Water Soul: Raven Alignment: Chaotic Neutral -- Hair Color: Blue-black and glossy Eye Color: Dark dove grey with faint white in the irises. Skin Tone: Café-au-laitWings: Black and feathered, but with little glittering flecks of water dotting the feathers Markings: ??? Clothing: I'd like for his clothing to be high-necked and severe -- perhaps a deep grey, with a high collar that's perhaps unbuttoned. Something in the Mandarin style (similar to this, but with embellishments at the artist's discretion).
Quote: Fish say, they have their Stream and Pond; But is there anything Beyond? - Rupert Brooke // Heaven Name: Enki Gender: Male Fel Essence: Desert Rain Soul: Betta splendens, Blue Veiltail morph Alignment: Chaotic Good -- Hair Color: Bluish/silvery, faintly iridescent Eye Color: Vivid, bright green Skin Tone: Very fair Wings: Similar to large, fanning fins that flow downward instead of up from his shoulderblades. Markings: Up to Kyou's discretion. Clothing: Preferably something flowing and soft in brilliant blues and violets.
To be more fully described at a later date~

// one who keeps This is the concept for the guardian.
What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well. - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
NAME : Phiel Cereus GENDER : Male AGE : 34 OCCUPATION : Bodyguard-for-hire RACE : Certified plain-and-simple human. LIKES : Piping hot black coffee; cinnamon-flavored candy; chocolate, the darker the better; hot fudge and caramel sundaes; sharp bright blades and pretty leather things; hot showers until the hot-water heater is empty; cold, stormy nights; winter and fall; jazz music; film noir; penny-dreadful mystery novels; deep fluffy featherbeds. DISLIKES : Hot summer days; guns of any type; pastel clothing; sour candies; long conversations; sleeping in the dark; early mornings; any medication (including headache medicine); doctor visits; close, direct skin-to-skin contact. LOOKS : Shortish and lean, Phiel stands at just below six feet, with short, shaggy greyed hair that falls in a cropped mess around his face. He's not a terribly handsome man, but he carries himself with pride bordering on arrogance despite the scars littering his face and hands. His eyes are a surprisingly warm grey, and his skin is very fair. Most often he is found in grey-pinstriped black slacks and vest over a charcoal-colored turtleneck and black wingtip shoes. He often looks rather forbidding due to the demands of his job. He wears thin, fine black leather gloves.
PERSONALITY : Rather serious, Phiel tends to be a little rigid and inflexible. He has trouble having 'fun' in a traditional sense. He works hard and when he occasionally takes a day off, it usually just consists of eating sweets, doing errands and taking care of chores, though he has a penchant for sleeping in until midmorning.
He has a tendency to be very athletic and tends to think on his feet. This often gives rise to a sudden, quick temper that occasionally gets him into trouble with his employers. He can be a little proud, but it rarely gets in the way unless someone's degrading him.
Some things in his past have left him wary and somewhat mistrustful; he refuses to allow a stranger to touch his bare skin, be it hands, arms, or wherever, resulting in compulsive wearing of long sleeves and tailored leather gloves if he is going to be in a crowd of people to avoid contact. If the issue is pushed, he is likely to freeze and become stiff, formal and dismissive toward the perpetrator.
He deeply enjoys mysteries: the only real fun he often has is watching old film noir movies and detective shows and attempting to puzzle out the twist in the end, sometimes getting rather animated over it. If Phiel is reading, it is probably an old-fashioned mystery novel or a mystery-thriller. He enjoys critical thinking and yet he only gets the surprise about half of the time. Ideally, he would enjoy a detective's job.
HISTORY : Coming from a rough childhood in a place that wasn't terribly child-friendly, Phiel grew up a bit rough-and-tumble -- learning to keep on his toes and to keep his back covered, trusting very few people, though those he did trust were trusted with his very life.
A betrayal by the people he cared for most landed Phiel in some serious hot water, and that very personal breach of ethics sent him over the edge, and no longer trusting anyone, he began dressing up neatly and gloving his hands, using clothing as a sheltering mechanism. As soon as he was legally and financially able to, at age eighteen, Phiel left home with his life savings, a backpack, and a check made out for downpayment on a small apartment.
Lacking an education beyond the compulsory, he struggled hard to get where he is now. He spent ten years doing menial jobs, working construction, doing temp jobs as secretaries and even being a club bouncer before settling into professional chauffeuring. From there, due to his nature and talents, he was hired by an ex-client for their bodyguarding business, and has been working with that organization for five years.
In the present, he has a comfortable place, a job that is sometimes rough but pays well, and a routine that fills his days... But he lacks companionship and has no close friends, though a fair amount of acquaintances.
QUIRKS: Despite his somewhat antisocial nature, Phiel is an avid aquarist, and very much enjoys the large fishtanks he keeps in his bedroom, which is always firmly locked unless he is home alone. He keeps two 50 gallon freshwater tanks, and one slightly smaller saltwater tank. In addition to that, he has a ten gallon planted tank with one large, friendly Siamese fighting fish that he keeps in the kitchen.

// rhyme or reason? These are the reasonings behind each choice I have made, from essence to soul to guardian.
Why Depolarized Water?: It sounded intriguing to me. Water, something that makes up the very essence of life, forgetting its duties and life-giving properties.
Why Desert Rain?: This was the first fel essence I ever came up with, so I thought I'd put it up to see if I could get some critique for it. It's not necessarily my favorite anymore, but that might change if I get a better grasp on it.
Why the Raven?: When I imagine something cold and wet, my first image (after Christmas) is of a black raven huddled against snow.
Why Phiel?: He's one of my favorite original characters, and the most interesting. He also did well in the Equinox of Gods meta contest, and people have expressed interest in playing with him already.

Good concepts, but I'm just going to warn you of something right now--Rivener's fel essence is a piece of the night sky, so I don't know if your first essence idea would work. Either way, good start, and just keep doing your best ^_^ *shot for not having anything more useful to say*

I really love your depolarized water fel essence. I think it really captures what a fel essence is like, in my mind. Something that's an impossibility given how we view the universe. However, I'm still uncertain about your desert rain. It seems less an impossibility and more... chimerical? Like you've cobbled together two things that normally do not coexist to make one object of them. It's not that it's bad, it's just... I don't know, I'm not a fan of those, I guess, since I've read up some other ones that are like that. Of course, this is your quest thread and you can totally do whatever you want! That's just my two cents.
Also, I don't know if you're gonna pull off a raven? The FAQ thread in the guild cites that a lot of Raevans already have bird souls and aren't recommended. It also says you can still use them, I just thought I'd point that out.
Otherwise, awesome job! <3
P.S. Phiel + Kyle = OTP
