Waaaaaaay back when, I used to eat Danimals. Well, one day, my VERY smart Mom decided to look at the ingredients which she and I now LOVE to do (LOL) and she saw CARMINE!!! O_O She heard of it before and thought it was a little red bug used for coloring (mainly reds, purples, oranges and pinks) in food and make-up. So, what did the smart one do? She actually called the number on the container and forced her way into talking to someone in the labs section. Te-he. And then!!!! She held stubborn until she made the lab lady tell her the deffinition of carmine. Te-he-he BLEEEEHH! Guess what?? It's a bug. Yup. Nasty, huh? Here's what 'they' do: In a room or such, they HARVEST these bugs and them scrap em up and dry them, next powdering them up and voila! Coloring in a cheap way. What products use carmine??? Well, I'll list a few for now, and then do some more research for you all.: Burt's Bees - lip shimmers (the white one would be ok since there's no coloring), same with the eyeshaow/blush Yopliat yogurt Ecco Bella (I think some of there pinks and reds do use carmine) Dr. Hauschka (some do, some don't I believe)
Produts Without Carmine (make-up wise), but make sure to still check, they could change without my notice: Terra Tints Zuzu heart Gabriel Color Beauty Without Cruelity MyChelle

I've known that since I was four. My mother always checks additive numbers and the like (only once or twice has she ever ok'd any of said additive numbers).
The number for Carmine is E120. Another common term for Carmine is Cochineal, which I tend to use to refer to it since you can make the color Carmine without the crushing of scale insects (cochineal insects), it's just that most people don't.

Yeah, I've known about this.
If it weren't for the fact that I deprogrammed myself out of the silly American mindset that consuming bugs is gross, I might actually be disgusted. razz

given how much "other" stuff the fda allows in food, Ie acceptable levels of insect matter among such other things, I dont neccesarily view all bugs as bad they just are, I avoid food colors just on general principal

I read that in Fast Food Nation, and that is crazy. Ocean Spray Juices is known for using that also.
