Dovev had made it a habit to patrol his little bit of land. Every now and then, a lion from one of the prides found their way into his home...one group was to be avoided until they passed, the other were to be guided either out of his home or back into their own pridal lands, depending on age. And other creatures still, from neither pride, sometimes found themselves lost in the treacherous bit of swampy jungle he called home.

The hunting was good enough, and it was hard for even the most evil of creatures to get very far without him noticing. Dovev had come to know every muddy inch of his home.

He sighed and stopped in one of the gnarled trees that littered the territory. Something had been bugging him for a while know, and he just couldn't figure it out.

"Mama?" her voice was small and lost, distant and sad, she had gotten lost. She wasn't entirely sure how, it had been a butterfly to start with then a strange twig like insect ad then finally a big green frog which she had chased until he had vanished in to the mud and now she it seemed was destined to sink in to the murky blackness too.

"Mama?" she called again her mud caked, tear strung face lifting to the sky as she called for rescue. She tripped then, further caking her fur in mud making her usually shining orange and pale cream fur look dingy so plastered was it to her fur. She started to weep softly she was so lost and alone and dirty and her legs were tired from trying to walk through the ooze. she lay where she had fallen a slightly orange tinged muddy blob amongst the dirt.

Dovev blinked as a sad voice reached his ears. He couldn't catch the words...but it sounded young, by the pitch. He leapt from the tree to the ground, and started towards the voice. The area played with sound rather well...but he'd grown accustomed to figuring out where sounds really originated. The sad voice stopped...but he kept going. And eventually he heard crying.

A soft sound, but still there. Looking around, he saw nothing out of the ordinary at first. But looking down, not far away, he saw a lump of mud that was oddly colored and shaking slightly. And happened to be the source of the weeping. The green leopard trotted over, the mud making swishing sounds as he waded through it.

"Why are you crying?" Was it a lost little one? Or abandoned? Or one of the smaller animals separated from its group?

She lifted her small head as the other approached her, her soft dark orange eyes red from crying. "I lost my mama" she squeeks, her voice so small and weak it could hardly be heard. "I don't know where she went.." She snuffles "And I am lost in this scary place and I am wet and cold and I want my mama back." She returned to crying then burying her dainty head in her paws, her small frame shaking.

She felt cold and frightened and had half convinced herself that the big green giant was nothing but a figment of her imagination, after all why would anyone be here in this scary muddy place?

Dovev looked at the little one with sympathy. He remembered when he'd woken up to his mother gone. And for a time, he'd been just as lost as this one had seemed to gotten herself.

"Don't cry, little one. Let's get the mud off your fur and then we can look for your mother." Part of Dovev hoped the cub's mother wasn't far off...that she was worried for her and looking. But he squashed that quickly. In Dovev's experience...that rarely was true. But there was no need to further upset the cub.

"I'm Dovev...and I suppose this place can be scary to one so small. But to me it is home."

Lifting her mud caked and tear stained face once again she sniffled looking up at the big green leopard before her. For the first time she realised she could smell him, he really was real not just her imagination playing games on her.

"Oh.." She squeaked "Okay." She slowly clambered to her tiny feet then, her legs a little wobbly bu she soon stemmed the shaking.

"My name is belle Mr Dovev." She whispered trying to look hopeful under all that dark mud. he was going to help her find her mummy! He was a nice green leopard clearly.

He smiled at her a little awkwardly. It had been a good while since he'd smiled at another. "It is good to meet you, Belle. Now...you don't look very steady." He knelt down a bit. "You can get on my back, if you'd like. My den and the river aren't too far away." The little one had gotten quite a ways in before he'd found her. Poor cub...

Perhaps this was the reason for the aching feeling? He so rarely met young ones, now that he was grown and living here. And little ones were such precious things...

She smiled weakly up at the large green leopard and looked at his back longingly, she so wanted to curl up on his broad back and sleep. It only took a moment of hesitation though before she clambered on to his large back her paws spread eagled across his spine as she clung on with her tiny forepaws. "Thank you Mr Dovev" She whispers, her voice weak and tired as she nestled in to his thicker fur.

"I'm glad you found me, i think I was lost forever if you didn't." She squeaks trying hard to stop shivering, she was still frightened and cold but at least she had been rescued.

Dovev nodded. "It's no problem, little Belle." He started towards his home, careful to avoid the rougher parts of the path or make the travel as smooth as he could for the cub.

"I'm glad too...It wouldn't do for such a pretty little one to stay lost." After he got her washed and settled to sleep, he would go catch her a marsh-hare. With as far in as she'd gotten, she had to be hungry. And it was hard to imagine a cub her age being able to hunt for herself.

((soooooo sorry for the long wait I have been super busy with college TWT!))

The little leopardess blinked owlishly as Dovev spoke to her, she let a little weak giggle roll over her lips as he spoke to her of being pretty. "You're pretty too mr Dovev" She smiles nestling in to that thick green fur and finding warmth and comfort in the way that the older leopard traveled.

"Do you live here mr Dovev? It's kinda scary.." She paused to let a yawn pass over her lips a tiny paw lifting to brush away sleep from her droopy eyes. "I'm glad you came, you're like a hero like outta a fairy tale!"

Pretty? Dovev had never been called pretty before. Handsome, by a few. Attractive, sometimes. But never pretty. But...coming from a cub, he didn't mind the term. "Thank you, Belle."

His home was...a bit scary, he supposed. But..."I do live here. I make sure others who wander in here, like you, don't get lost for good. I guide them back to the world outside." He smiled back at the cub.

"Ohh" Belle looked at the back of the green leopards head quietly and summed up that he was indeed a hero like in the fairy tales her mother spoke of and her father sang of. "So you are a hero." She squeaked her young mind finding comfort in the fact that she was safe with a hero in this dark and scary land.

She started to ponder where exactly they were going but that didn't last very long, she was happy to nestle on his wide back comforted by the gentle almost rocking motion his movements provided.

A...hero? He'd certainly never thought of himself that way. Dovev had just been doing what he thought was right...His smile grew. Mayhap he was a hero...maybe he wasn't. Whichever he was, though...he'd saved this little one. "Thank you, Belle."

The semi-clearing, where the cave that served as his home was, came upon them quickly. He splashed through the shallow river (more like a creek), and lay down on the other side, so Belle could get off. "Here we are...my home." Some sun filtered through the trees, and there was no mud...it was mostly dirt and leaf covered stone.

((sorry for the wait hun I have been super busy with college!))

Belle half stumbled from the big leopards back landing on wobbly legs she allowed her paws to bring her belly to the ground, she was too tired to stand the long trudge through the thick mire of the swamp had exhausted the youngster and she was ready just to allow her head to drop and allow sleep to take her away back to her mothers warm side.

As she breathed though the mud which caked her deep orange fur cracked and shifted making it difficult to concentrate on sleeping. "Can I have a bath?" She looked up at the big make her deep orange gaze staring up at the male whom had rescued her from what most certainly would have been a slow death in the ooze.

(That's okay!)

Dovev nodded and picked the cub up carefully with his mouth. It was a simple matter, since the skin on a cub was a little looser than an adult. He trotted over to the small river that ran along one side of his home and placed her in a shallow section.

"It'll be easier to get all the mud off you with running water." He took a step back. "If you need any help, just ask." What did the little one look like under the mud? Orange was certain, since fur did show through the mud. But markings were another story.
