Three tails brushed side to side in a mindless manner, a habit as if to sweep away the extra time lingering around. Extra time, that's all it was anymore. Humming to herself, the femme kitsu rested her head on her paw as she glanced at the scenery boredly. The grass of the hillside plains were now dry and brittle as the change of season laid it's cold fingers on the land. In the very least, there wasn't snow yet. Well, not on the low lands. Two-toned eyes drifted upward to scan the not so distant mountains and their powdered caps. "Well, that's just one more location to avoid." Deciding enough time was wasted lounging around, Setsu finally made to stand. Her fur and scales bristled as she stretched, bones popping comfortably in the process. Once done readjusting, the kitsu began a slow and unmotivated pace across the fields. "Perhaps it's high time to revisit that scientist." She couldn't even begin to imagine what he may have been up to lately. So why not be nosy for once?

User ImageAs a temperature-sensitive creature, the young girl had noticed the changes in weather early into the seasonal shift, quietly dismayed when her rainy puddles turned to iced-over slush that even she was smart enough to bypass. The grass too was different, crunching a little with every step, making her lift her legs higher and peer underneath when other sounds weren't distracting her ears. Leaves had started to fall in droves, dropping like messengers heralding a new time in her life, and she batted at them as she walked, making a game out of how long she could keep one between her paws before it crumbled to dust. Staying active was important, and tailing the dispersed beams of light helped to keep her warm where the heavy jacket draped over her failed. Experience had taught Eve that stillness could result in unpleasant results, even if she occasionally ignored her body's demands to investigate the wet undersides of rocks and anything else of potential curiosity.

So it was unsurprising when vibrant purple bobbing in the distance immediately attracted the scaled female's attention, a color quite unmatched by the rest of the scenery and therefore worth a second glance. That it appeared to be attached to a moving being made her switch unmarked lanes even faster in fear that she would miss out, her leathery coat snapping irritably at the swift movement, causing the kitsusagi to jump a bit in surprise. Undaunted, she crept closer to the plodding individual, taking up a place behind a rock and peering over it with open curiosity. Her ears flicked, mussing pale buttercup hair, catching a word on the wind and wondering if it was meant for her.

"Hi," She greeted, pulling herself clumsily up onto her hidey-rock with no small amount of claw scraping. Once she'd reached the summit, her upper body flopped down to prevent dropping off the boulder's face, chin perched on her front legs while a raised bottom displayed a trio of armor-speckled tails that waved at the other in a friendly and inquisitive manner. "Who're you talkin' to?"

There was a constant shifting in the corner of her sight, one that she made to pay well attention to. Being that the source was too dashed to be simple leaves drifting by, and the resounding pace was an active one. Too active for her taste, to be honest. But whatever it may be, it would be easy enough to track with how...unsubtle the footfalls were.

Castng dull eyes forward, Setsu continued her slow tread toward the distant base of the mountain. Why did that pest insist on living near the cold? Sure it preserved his test subjects and the cave he resided in was ravishing....it still was surrounded by snow. She could only afford to get so close. But then what? Sit outside and yell out demands for him to come greet her? Uh no. Maybe she could scoop him out with a small amount of dust? Lord knows his cave was messy enough to hold the amount needed for her to control....

"Hey....."

Pausing, the pale femme blinked to her automatic response. Was she that deep out of thoughts to randomly answer another's calling? Scowling at her own lack of attention, the kitsu pivoted to face the other. Hm, and judging by the direction, this blonde femme had been the one tagging along unannounced. Holding her tongue as the other scrabbled upon the rock, Setsu took that time to observe the other. She seemed young, if not just small. And her tails held a shimmer to them that did admittedly make her curious. Quirking a brow with a firm muzzle, the femme gave a bored shrug. "Well, it wasn't you. So why ask?"

PostPosted: Mon Nov 10, 2008 12:26 am

The reply made the teen perk instantly with glee, glad for the promptness that caused her to feel somehow significant in the dull reflection of opposing eyes. "Hihi." She giggled again, perhaps a little too enthusiastic as she slid down the rock, barely pulling up in time to miss planting her nose in the dirt. Eve straightened without a show of self-consciousness, blowing away the hair that had crowded around her face and revealing the same tiny dots of plating stretched out beneath her left eye, pattering in gold and white tracks down her neck before the coat hid the rest of its journey from view. It was unquestionable that she was smaller than the kitsusagi she faced, her youthfulness not to be held entirely accountable, though it must have played a role. She seemed unaware of the difference in size, however, only too glad to tilt her chin up and gaze at the purple-haired female, admiring her garb for the warmth it must have stored rather than the quality of it.

A shrug and some words were directed her way, and the kit-minded girl happily ate them up, seeming to miss the hint of reproach both held. "I 'unno. 'Caaause... it's always nice to say hello, even when you can't see someone?" She pulled away from the boulder, seeming not the least bit concerned about how her vague answer was received. After all, the adult had stopped walking and appeared to be monitoring her with equal interest, so they shared a similar preoccupation; she just didn't realize that it wasn't necessarily a lasting one.

"I'm Eve," She volunteered the name willingly, her words slightly rushed as she padded closer, piqued by the lavender tails protruding from beneath the other's jacket. They looked to be covered in something a little like her own sparse scales, the individual discs blended seamlessly together until she couldn't quite separate them. And yet there was nothing haphazard to the arrangement, the effect more dazzling than anything else, and made clearer as they moved through slips of sunlight. "It's easy to remember, and it doesn't matter if you spell it backwards or forward. Prolly not upside-down. What's your name?"

The older femme watched in stretched entertainment as the girl giggled and squirmed to the simple attention. And her brows gave the slightest lift as she tilted her head, watching the other stumble before sweeping herself up with a grin still intact. What an active positive youth she was. It was also noted how she was nearly as tall as Setsu was standing. Though she was slimer it seemed, and with suiting proportions for her form. While Setsu had shorter legs (damn it all) and her form was obviously heavier with all the gears to her uniform. Details aside, it was still enough to strike Setsu's ego and make her huff under her breath.

One ringless ear canted in Eve's direction as she shuffled about, and Setsu directed her eyes back to the other's. "Well....now I see you. Does that make you feel accomplished?" It was only when the chocolate kitsu skittered alittle too near that Setsu shifted back an inch. "Eve then." One tail snaked forward to lay as a barrier between the two femmes, an unkind weight despite its inviting shimmer.

"Let us cut to the chase then, since your attention seems to bound endlessly." Even as she spoke her words, Setsu found herself clicking the claws on her forepaw like a snap for focusing. "My name is Setsu. Set-su. Got that? And no, it won't work backwards. Don't even try. But, you can try and find something else to see and greet. Hm?" The female rubbed at her temple slowly, trying to comprehend this unexpected situation. So now she had been caught in the eyes of a youngster. No, an adolescent, to be fair and respective to the other's age. Nonetheless, she was a youthful individual and apparently full of energy. Not...the best of company for the capricorn since she had changed into a state of 'inactivity'. Now it was all she could do to....kindly persuade the girl to leave her be without company.

"Um-hm." Was the unsuspecting reply Setsu earned for her trouble, the youth watching intently with her poppy-orange eyes as the other left a patch of earth cold with her backward movement. "Think so, 'neeway." It was a kind of rainbowy sensation to talk to another individual again after so long, one that crowded up her thoughts with vibrant half-circles of cartwheeling delight and a love for the sullen rain. Maybe that was the same thing as feeling accomplished; she could only assume it was, seeing as no one had said differently. "I see you too." She offered as an afterthought, willing to impart that same vibrancy she felt in her chest to the horned female with a few simple words that even she couldn't mutilate.

A small, pink tongue flicked out toward the older kitsusagi when she spoke, the forked ends of it curling vaguely, as though to catch a stray taste of dusted-off words before slipping back into her mouth once more. The snap made her straighten almost unconsciously, her attention focusing like the burning beam of a tilted magnifying glass. "Set-suuu." She repeated diligently, her brow furrowing as she tried to do the reversal internally before she was warned against it. Uus... usset, no, not quite. Eve gave up on it reluctantly when it was specified, instead creeping nearer to the tail that had found its way between them and lay unfurled like a lavender-gorged entity of leisure. Close-up, it was prettier yet to the adolescent, and she moved a paw out as though to touch, stopping a little short and grabbing her own jacket sleeve with her teeth. She rolled the fabric upward with a tiny growl of playfulness, bending her elbow and examining the scales there, looking back and forth as though making a comparison.

A suggestion that she seek out others was put forth, and she glanced up with a light thrum of curiosity vibrating along her throat. The blonde turned first one way and then the other, giving the area behind her a second glance in case it had changed between directions. When she turned forward again, it was with a quizzical expression. There wasn't anyone else around, so who could Set-su have been referring to? Eve might have asked, if the motion that brought paw to head hadn't made her crowd the other instantly, overstepping the tail with a concerned frown gracing her fey features. "Hurt?" She asked, sniffing near the other's muzzle, as though the hypothetical pain would also noticeably perfume her breath.

"Thanks.....for stating the obvious..." Well of course she could see her. For one they were face to face, and Setsu had a clear view of noticing the other's pupils. Clear and healthy. So blindness was of no concern. Her claws extended unintentionally as she continued to rub her brow, ignoring the tension there that wouldn't fade away. Or was that just the short and tawny fur that she still wasn't used to as her flesh?

One eye squinted open, her birthright indigo eye, to keep alert on the stranger before her. Was that....honestly what she thought it was? Her brow quirked and she was quick to assume her vision incorrect. Besides, her hair did fringe into her sight, and could have easily been a slit in the other's little tongue display. A stiff nod answered her repetition, thankfully unaware of the youth's internal thought processing. "Just, not so long on the u, next time." If there was a breath to stifle, it would have been heard at the moment Eve's paw decided to go on an investigation. But Setsu's lungs were cobbed, and so her expression alone beheld her pause and analyzation of the other kitsu's bold actions. But, the one named Eve was wise, and her paw retreated before making contact. The older femme witheld a smirk, just imagining the internal struggle it took for the kitsu to make that decision.

"Oh, and what's this." The undead bent forward an inch and tilted her head to view the arm of the girl kitsu. There too were scales, smooth and small as tears, and just as shimmery. "Reptilian or aquatic. Do you know?" They were spaced quite flexibly, and how they blended peasfully with the chocolate fur left Setsu to believe it was reptile influence.

Her examining went short as Eve twitched about, glancing side to side randomly. Oh, that's right. She had told her to scram. And.....the girl....was actually lookng for other company. How literal was she? Setsu slid her paw to her cheek at this obvious realization, before she was forced to utter out a low growl. In an instant, the robed girl had approached her. Cutting open her 'bubble' without a seam of evidence and so swiftly; it made the undead bristle her fur. Her tail end darted out to catch the Eve's ankle, if nothing than to prove as a kindly warning. Though it did nothing to help smooth the bothered cringe on her muzzle. "Not at all. And it's very unhealthy for you to cross me so daringly." Or unwittingly, considering the circumstances.

The other's mindful interest in her patchy scales was exciting, and she considered showing off the small shield on her belly and the trickling path of them that spilled between her shoulder blades like a reversal of the Siegfried myth. It was the question that followed which gave her some pause, a thin, atypical line appearing on her brow as she tried to decide. "... Um. Re... qua..." Evie murmured irresolutely, not certain what the difference between the two categories was, much less what either of them had to do with her. 'Quatics were fishy things, weren't they? And she was all but a rock in water, perfectly capable of sinking yet needier when it came to oxygen.

But then the situation had changed and she was too busy pressing forward to stop and shrug her heavy clothes off so that Setsu could satisfy her curiosity with an answer. At the very least, the child was sensible enough to halt at the growl, her ears lowering a hair when she was confronted by a grimacing expression. The unhealthy comment caught her attention the firmest, seeing as her thoughts had already been circling that particular avenue, trying to decide if it was the correct way to go. Was the other contagious then? But she had said she wasn't sick, or at least that she was 'not at all,' which sounded a lot like the same thing. There was something strange about the entire thing, about the faint chill that wafted off of the appendage that encircled her leg, so easily detectable to a child who had been self-taught to dread snow and icy fall.

She picked the captive paw up lightly, not to dislodge the wrapped tail but merely to tug it higher for a closer glance. She gave an innocent sniff at it before the split tip of her tongue paid another visit, flitting out to lick at the hard sequence, some of them sharp enough to cut if she pressed more sincerely than feather-light. They were a little salty - a property that would have given rise to discomfort if it had been the least bit warm or coppery - but they didn't taste sick or injured or anything of that sort. The adolescent rolled the flavor around in her mouth for a moment, dropping her paw back down in the mean time. "Okie." She agreed finally, her findings too inconsequential to mistrust what she'd been told.

Blink. "Requa..... Alright, works for me." So the other wasn't too certain herself what they were. Interesting....had no one told her or was there no one else left like her? Her keen eyes narrowed to this thought, though she shouldn't really be surprised. Bubbly individuals did tend to be oblivious to details if they proved mundane enough.

Apparently, something clicked in the light-haired girls mind. Had Setsu's words struck home for the other, causing her to withdraw any detective impulses? The femme watched sternly as the other kitsu lifted her paw tenderly, peering at her coiled tail as well. Setsu shifted just an inch to allow some wiggle room and pulsing for the girl's captured limb. What she hadn't expected was for Eve to taste test her dulled scales. It was enough to make her brow lift, and the action resulted in her recoiling her tail away from the odd touch.

But that wasn't an end for the older kitsu. On dry impulse, Setsu reached forward and clasped Eve's slim paw in her own. "How very smart of you. Now how about we cut this to the quick, yes? You've met me and now I've met you. It seems you've fulfilled your little quest there. Now then, if you do not mind, I have business to attend to." Releasing her grip, she gave one last frown to the tan kitsu before continuing her interrupted stride from earlier.

Though she highly doubted such an abrupt ending to be taken in delight by the girl. In fact, she nearly counted on it.

The tail's retreat was disappointing, but she watched it slither back from her small ankle without interfering, eyeing the other two as though wondering if they might have a different flavor. Sure, the trio looked similar enough, but blackberries appeared identical on the vine, and some of them were tart and some were sweet and some just made her sick to her stomach. Mostly the too-sweet, falling-apart ones that she had to barter away from flies, all pretty and jeweled until they burst like rain in her mouth. When Eve felt her foot being grabbed once again, she glanced quickly down to see what new thing was available, peeking curiously back up when she'd found it was Setsu's padded hand that had seized hers. Had she said something good then? What was a quick and why did the other kitsusagi want to cut it so badly?

"Um..." She shifted on her rump, her claws keeping retracted while she curled the toes around the offered grip. It felt strangely nice to hold someone's paw, even if it had come so unexpectedly that she was still having trouble deciding what was required of her. And then it was over, and she stared after the purple-haired female, standing up and half-pouncing the dust in uncertainty while the other side of her conversation edged further away. They had met and they'd talked, it was true, but she was still reluctant to bid as eager a goodbye as Setsu wished, especially since she didn't really know what good a quest was if it didn't feel done.

"Where at?" She called after her, voice high and piping to better carry on the breeze, the temperature colder than she remembered it being when she'd merely been on the trail of an elusive purple streak. If it was something grown-up and she wasn't allowed to take part, she could at least wait outside wherever it was and pick up where they'd left off. Maybe Setsu could explain to her what it meant to be 'quatic or reptile-y, and what salty, dull violets had in common with brown-white sands.

Her expression shifted minutely as the younger kitsu's paw adjusted to her own. Not struggling, or even roughly, but just to grip back at the offending paw. Despite the placid reaction, Setsu withdrew her paw without hesitance and resisted the urge to dust it off on her sleeve. It wasn't often for her to be caught in a 'handshake' of sorts.

Strides heavy and stiff, it only took four steps before the other kitsu was tailing her once again. And with another question, as if it was mandatory for the youth. Giving a roll of her eyes, the undead cast her sight on the mountain range. It was so near yet so far, concerning the height distance. "Up there, if you really must know. I have business with a doctor of sorts." But with so much snow still clinging the slopes, it'd be a slow trek. She'd have to fine the clearest path, one more rock than snow. Even if both options were dangerous. "And if you're more the Requatic type, I'm afraid you'll be unable to tag along. Heh, might not even be enough air for all your speakings."
PostPosted: Sun May 24, 2009 8:20 pm

She was already unconsciously tagging along in her head, raising her chin toward where the other female indicated, and her eyes grew wide with curiosity. "All the way up there?" Eve hadn't realized that the jagged, sky-scarfing peaks were accessible to walk along, much less to live on. They were white like sugar, raised huge and looming, and their shadows left craters of darkness that made them appear even brighter by contrast. She understood snow and all its unpleasantness; what she couldn't quite grasp was why something closer to the sun had gathered an icy mantle around itself while the valley retained the same rich, brown hues. Maybe something lived there and made it that way: A great big bird that molted and left its plumage drifting behind in cloud-puff shades.

It was Setsu's reasoning that pulled her back from the heavens' underbelly, trying to sort out all the little puzzle pieces that rattled about in her skull. She knew what doctors were for in theory, never having been to one herself. They tended to the unhealthy and the injured, by her limited definition, neither of which Setsu had agreed on being. Sometimes, people didn't like to admit that they were hurting, but she hadn't found anything wrong, and the purple-haired kitsusagi seemed well...

"How much air's 'nuff air?" She asked quizzically, her ears flipping down as her nature was thrown back in her face. It wasn't her fault that she was whatever it was she was being called. And what was Setsu, then, if she got to go and not worry about it?

"That's right. Feel as motivated now?" Hell, even she herself didn't feel motivated to make this trek. But her priorities called for it, and the femme set firm on getting her tasks done. The kitsu tilted her head to search over the younger girl's eyes, trying to judge the emotion there. Just what was she thinking...or daydreaming, now? Setsu never had been good at reading one's features anyways, especially when they belonged to the younger. Different lifestyles and beliefs tended to be the greatest barrier there.

"Heh." Pale tails shimmered as they bent, and Setsu offered a shrug. "Let's find out then. Though I must say, either type of scales are not fond of the cold. Wouldn't you agree?" And Eve seemed to be covered in more scales than herself, would she honestly manage? Would Setsu even be able to make the cut? This was her first time traveling the slopes with snow, after all. "Eh, just save the oxygen for more breathing than talking, you may last longer." And with that, the girl snapped her neck to the side and narrowed eyes to examine the ridging of the mountain. There, that area seemed wide enough. With a speedy step, Setsu leaped up a slate of stone before pausing thoughtfully on another one.

"I'll show you even now, you can see the caves rim from this angle. I'd say it's worth a good work out for both of us. Maybe it can even warrant a race if you are a mountain climber? Come as far as you can, and if not, then just dwell down here."
PostPosted: Sun Sep 20, 2009 4:14 pm

Motivation had never really been an issue with Eve. Supposing there was none to be found, or the argument had suddenly erased any trace of pre-existing incentive, she would still prove more than willing to make up her own as they went along. Fizzy orange eyes roamed the mountains, hooking around the sharp angles, drifting across the frosted white. Eddies of cool air flowed down to meet her as she mused, the skin under her fur puckering at the sensation, all gooseflesh and shrinking scales. There was no denying a twinge of discomfort, the youth shifting on her paws and flicking her focus back to Setsu. "Uh-huh." She murmured a little uncertainly, not having really heard the question, just knowing that agreement was expected from the way it was phrased. When the purple-haired female took off, Eve started off behind her at a slightly slower pace, edging into the mountain's shadow.

The first jump made her hesitate, but she unsheathed her claws and started to work her way up after the elusive violet scales, skittering around and trying not to land on her companion when she inevitably slipped. The stone on which they perched was smooth and unaccommodating, and her nails barely found microscopic places to hold while she waited for the leader to pick out the next spot. In the mean time, she could look around and squint to find differences in the salt-bright landscape, investigating for other signs of life and discovering that they were the only two clambering upward on this side of the range.

Setting a paw down without checking, she nearly yelped when it connected with a trail of snow, the cold sizzling straight through her calloused pads and into her toes. Definitely not the eiderdown she'd been imagining, not by any stretch of the imagination. Only Setsu's continued encouragement made her bear it, one serpentine tail curling up under her belly to preserve heat when she could risk it without throwing her balance. She was not a mountain-climber. She was not a mountain-anything, truthfully, raised beneath the whispering canopy of trees instead of sky. It seemed a sobering task, and she had to hone her attention on Setsu's feet, on her own clumsy gait. By the time she remembered she was not a fan of heights, it would be too late to turn back.

Stretching her useless neck, the paler of the two kitsusagi peered up through the blinding shade. It wasn't all that far to her destination, though this route did hold the sharpest and riskiest angle. Not too much a concern for the mistress that can control substances of earth. But what about.....

Flinching as she was slightly bumped into, dull eyes turned to her cheery companion and Setsu took in her disposition now. The clattering of her claws on stone along with the smallest of shivers under her fur gave hint to her jittery condition. For what reasons Setsu couldn't fathom, though maybe this small height to her was a dangerous fall to the other? And she couldn't deny that the air around them was cold; enough to nearly numb the bond between her conscious and vessel. So long as she wasn't unlucky enough to fall in a patch of snow, she felt confident in completing this trek.

"Listen, y..." Ears pinned flat as Eve made a sudden and quite drastic sound and it echoed shortly off the frigid mountain sides. And the females words died on her tongue as she whipped her attention to the ledges above with sharp attention. But the reactions of her body were slower than ever, and by the time she lifted her chin it was too late. Even by the younger girl's minute yelp had been enough to disturb the snow's slumber. Light and slushy snow fell from their perches on the mountain face, and one such perch happened to settle right above them.

A burning freeze seared her mind as the icy substance splattered across her face. Her body jolted on faint instinct at the contact. Eyes, nostrils, and ears all became a roaring flare of shock before the senses fell worthless and the older female knew nothing more than the abyss swallowing her up.

Body limp, the kitsu collapsed heavily on the ledge with a dull thud, her eyes still glazed half open.
