Well, the kept needing to rely on fillers, while the manga got ahead. And the quility of the fillers wasn't that great, so they decided to and it before it got worse. There was other reason, like other projects and stuff, but that's the main one that I can remeber. It's been four years, since it ended, so forgive me if my memory's fuzzy.

Sachiko-sama said most of it. The anime kept catching up with the manga, and the Japanese audience got tired of the fillers. Apparently, the Japanese are more interested in new things - like new episodes, new series - so they like to just move on when people get bored of things. Instead of leaving a show to decline in quality over ten years, and then show reruns of it for 20 years.
