I just wanted to bring up a little point. Around my area we have a of guitarists yet most of them would only be classified as chord players. A lot of people think their pretty good because they know their basic chords like every other guitarist and of course they show it everytime i play. Now i wanted to bring up was what do you think of people who only play chords? At one time i was talkin to a painoist and of course he's played his basic chords but he doesn't know any near close of guitar. He believes you can make a platinum off playing chords all you life like Jonas Brothers or these chord only players. What do you think of that?

I dont usually hold the skill of a chord only player very high, but then the same is true with me and shredders. I like someone who can play a nice melodic song with the melody but knows when to hit a chord. Not fingerpicking though, that's a whole nother thing in my book. I think someone can make platinum with just chords. In theory all you need is an album with songs everyone likes. I bet there are more than enough people in the world who would like chord only songs (if the songs were good enough). I've never listened to the jonas brothers.

When i mean chords i mean they play power chords or barre chords..its just he basic chords. I mean i think its foolish to be chasing a dream like jonas brothers. They are supported by disney i mean how hard can it be. He was telling me about how if you have enough "heart" to play it doesn't matter if you have no skill. Its as absurd as someone who just played guitar hero to take up a guitar and play three chords and make a platinum record. I really doubt you can be good just because you have a little sugar high from a little bit of inspiration. But thats just me...

It matters what you do over the chords. If it's just "WHEE LOOK AT ME THIS IS A C NOW WATCH ME CHANGE TO A G," then it ain't much. But if the guy can do good vocals while playing, or compose lead parts to be played over that, then he's good.
...That line is a funny idea for a song.

People are morons when it comes to music. The only ones who give a crap about your skills is the group of people who play the same instrument you do. I played simple arpegios on an unplugged electric at school and cheerleaders couldn't get enough of me and the only guy who noticed that I was sucking out of control was one dude who also played guitar.
Write some catchy songs that you hate no matter how hard or easy it is then worry about being good. Get an audience with a jingle THEN make something worth playing. I play Hendrix CDs at school on the computer and when I'm listening to something really good and emotional like Little Wing or Third Stone from the Sun and I'm just lost in it some jackass always comes over and switches it to Foxey Lady because it's a fast, catchy song that I can't stand anymore.

You had a good example with the cheerleaders n all. But you gotta admit it's a good feeling whenever you can get away with it lol.

If they sound good, I don't see why it's important what they're doing.
By "chord players", you mean people who play nothing but basic chords day in day out?

Out of nowhere. Or from learning songs. I wouldn't call myself a shredder, but I could be one if I chose to. I just learned songs with hard solo's and it just happened.

Currently i'm learning arpeggios for metal guitar and its hard as hell. The arpeggios i have to do are all sweep picked and getting that up to speed takes forever..

Anyway, I still stand by what I said before, that if you sound good it doesn't matter what you're doing. It's just that I can't see how anyone can sound really good playing only basic chords...

All they hear is the different strum patterns and they think its different.
