It's that magical time of the year again, production time. I was wondering if anyone else has any backstage rituals, or any memories of being backstage. Things such as someone falling asleep backstage and snoring loud enough for the audience to hear. I was the unlucky one sent to wake him up...

When I was in West Side Story I was a Shark Girl and Officer Schrank (not enough boys), so I obviously had 2 different Shark Girl outfits and a suit (and hat). Almost (except once) every time I left the stage I had to run to the bathroom and change my entire outfit (which ment either get out of a 3 piece suit and into a dress, stockings, and shoes, or vice versa) and I was in the scene right after "America" as Officer Schrank, so I had like a minute to get out of the dress and into the suit.

hmmm well I was in a play in high school where some of the other actors would tell dirty jokes right before going on stage but I just kinda tryed to compose myself before going on.

When I was in Guys and Dolls we used to rearrange the words to have...well...explicit meanings. It always made it so hard to go onstage and sing the most somber song once it'd been changed. sweatdrop
In Fiddler on the Roof I danced with a bottle on my head as a man right after being a woman, so I had to run downstairs then back up the other stairs to get to the dressing rooms and change, then put my beard on and try and get out there in time. After the scene was over I had to put half a jar of cold cream on my face to get rid of the beard, reapply my make-up and get into my woman's costume with my winter stuff over it. After my scene in that costume I had to be ready for the curtain call, in which I had to be a bottle dancer...so I had to wear three costumes at once. stare

I've had some bad costume change experiences as well. We have an annual fundraising talent show for our Drama Club, and each year between the acts the hosts do skits to entertain the crowd. That job involves some major quick-change action. Especially when you find out that the dance routine that is between skits with a formal costume and a spanish soap opera theme (lots of ponchos and sombreros) is less than a minute. You really learn to get over the fear of co-ed dressing rooms.

I've got some fun stories.
This summer I was in Beauty and the Beast. Closing night there were some mean schenanigans happening backstage. For example, everyone knew the guy who was playing Lumiere couldn't keep a strait face to save his life. During one of the scenes he was supposed to be leaning against the side of the stage sleeping. Backstage, Cogsworth was poking him in the back with a hanger. It was hilarius. Then there was the show where Cogsworth's wig fell off when he was onstage during one of the scenes.....

My senior show in high school was Meet Me in St. Louis. One of the songs is called something to the effect of Nothing is Better than New York, and towards the end is the line "Nothing is finer, no not Argentina, Carolina, Regina or Corg". Well, backstage the guy who sings the line was joking with another person about the line, how it sounds like like "...Argentina, Carolina, v****a or Corg". During one of the shows he accidentally sang that line without realizing it! He was so scared that the director was gunna flip on him!

I've got many stories to tell that are pretty good. Just a few for now, more later on.

The first was from Annie. Many of my fellow ensemble members were people I went to school and were friends with. Among them was my friend Shannon and her EX, Justin. One of Justin's parts was the president's assistant and right after "Tomorrow" Shannon was assigned to knock on the door, then he had to come and get a letter from her. First few shows we just did it like that, but after by the time we got to the second weekend, we were getting bored, so Shannon decided to have some fun with her EX. One night, Shannon kept pulling the letter away as he grabbed for it and he got like this demon look on his face and grunted like a bull. Another night she shined a flashlight in his face, and yet another night sprayed him with perfume as he took the letter. She was a bad girl, but her cheated on her... so power to her.

Next was when we did Damn Yankees at my highschool. I was Miss Weston and at one point I had to give the guy playing the devil a letter. Now, you need to know... you should NEVER give us paper to pass around ON STAGE, cus it turns into a contest of who's gonna crack first.
Well, there was this teacher that Keith had for English that was like his loveable arch enemy. They loved to hate eachother basically. So the one night I wrote on the letter... "Keith, I can no longer hold back my feelings for you! Met me in my room later so that we can make sweet, sweet love! I'm waiting, Gav" He was SO close to losing it, but he held it in and then turned and gave me a dirty little look and I just smiled innocently back at him.

Durring these small one act plays we did i was actually the T.D. and had to run sound, my friend mike did lights. One night at rehersal we were JUST about to start act 1, and the school fire alarm went off. It was november in CT, so it was REALLY COLD. the drama kids and the swim team and audult ed. were all outside in their own little groups while fire trucks from ALL of the surrounding towns came. and there was no fire. it was a wood fire in the woods and the schools new ventilation system sucked in the smoke from it and it had filled up the gym. Anywho, as this was all happening i looked at our 30-something cast/crew and said, who wants to play suck and blow?!
most people backed away having no idea what i was talking about, but i took out a playing card and held it up to my mouth and breathed in...mike came up and took it wich his mouth...then everyone got the hang of it and started to play, we had about 10 kids playing....of course everytime the card is dropped, the people have to kiss, so, our teacher, who didnt mind us playing is like, your all gonna get sick! kiss on the cheek instead!!! so when she's around we play with kissing cheeks but when we're backstage and she's doing other stuff, we play with kissing on the mouth, there were some interesting happenings...lolz

Ha, I just thought of another one. redface
When I was in Guys and Dolls, Nathan had to read a letter from Adelaide's (sp?) mother. He'd read it off the paper every single night, so on the last show, Adelaide got mad that he hadn't memorized it yet, so she put white tape over most of the letter, only leaving him a few words to go by! The look on his face was so funny when he opened it, but he managed to carry it off pretty well. whee

During the dress rehearsal for 42nd Street, we performed for our school. In one of the earlier scenes, we suddenly heard "I'm grabbin'...I'm grabbin' my hat and coat..." from the speakers. The girl who played Maggie was practicing her part of the song Gettin' Out of Town, and the sound crew had forgotten to turn off her mic. She was so embarassed. ^_^

All your talk of writing funny things on letters reminded me of another one! When I was in Beauty and the Beast last summer, during one of the scenes Gaston is supposed to give Belle a small picture of him. Well, we had some fun with that! There were some funny pics of the Disney Gaston, some fun ones of Eric (the guy who was playing Gaston), as well as Mr. T, Michael Jackson, and Gary Coleman.

Also, during a Christmas review I was doing followspots for, one of the numbers involved 2 girls singing to pictures, then after the song, they'd put them up on the mantle of the fireplace. Michael Jackson successfully made his way into one of those frames, then came back that spring in Meet Me in St. Louis, and the following fall during their production of Musical Comedy Murders of 1940. To my knowledge, he's still up in the prop loft!

hmmm, lets see, the first thing that comes to mind was two years ago when i worked light board for you're a good man charlie brown. during one of the scenes, the actor who played charlie came out one line before he was supposed to. i had already turned his mic on because he was just about to go onstage, but i wasnt expecting what happened next. after realizing his mistake, he kind of scuttled offstage, then swore really loudly. and i hadnt turned his mic off. it echoed in the theatre, and everyone was really stunned with complete silence. then the actress whose line was charlie's cue suddenly spoke up: "gosh, what do you suppose that was?" and the actress she was talking to said "im not sure, maybe it was the wind", and then they both walked offstage and finished the scene without charlie even coming on. it was probably one of the most akward but funny saves i have ever seen.

We were rehersing and someone (won't say who) had a mike on and they said "Where's my God Damn Gun?!" Then the Directer said "no talking backstage"

My school has what's called Parent's Night (I don't know if other places have this), it's the final dress rehersal with lights, sound, costumes, etc. Most regard it as opening night, because it's when the parents of students can come and watch the show for free, and it's the night when they're allowed to record and take pics and all that. Right before the show started on parents night for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, one girl backstage was talking, and didn't realize her mic was on, and the audience could hear her talking. They heard "It's just parents night. No one gives a flying f..." and whoever was running sound cut her mic off right at that moment.

Backstage is so fun! whee

Our school always puts on our productions at the Aloha Theater because we don't have a theater of our own. The Theaters back stage is SUPER OLD (1932). I'm talking stuff falling, the whole thing is held up by scrap boards, wholes in the wall you so you can see outside, 3 lights in all, old. However, it is also very awesome because it's so old. There is a long stair case that goes up through about 3 stories of the stage which eventually leads to an open plat form high above the stage. On year the directors brother and I found a pink bear stuffed animal thing and we lowered (by some rope we found) onto the stage during tech rehersal when the lead was practicing a song. I was supper funny, people all over where having a "WTF?" moment.

That little plat form is also awesome because from there you can walk on the ceilings cross beams to get to the other side, then there is a whole you can climb down into and you are now in the sound box behind the audiance. It's a handly little thing.
