This thread is for Halloween costume brainstorming and assistance.
In this case, I'm thinking of non-avatar costumes. Meaning, a costume you put on your offline manifestation.
Go to it with enthusiasm, but no flaming or meanness. If you can't say something politely constructive to a post, it is better not to reply to that particular post.
Example Posts:
"I want to be __________... I have figured out almost everything except ________... I also have considered _______ for my costume. Ideas?"
"How can I use my costume as social commentary?"
"I need a good costume involving my parent/guardian/animal companion/sweetie/friend(s). I'm going as ______ and I want them not to embarass me with their costume."
"I'm allergic to ______, but I want to be ______ which generally involves that thing I'm allergic to. How can I substitute this element of my costume?"

I want to try dressing up as Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls. I have most of it figured out, except for the following:
1. Where can I get a cheap copy of The Dresden Dolls Companion? (I lack a credit card, so I need a store where I can go physically and pay cash.)
2. What will I do for the eyebrows? I'm not allowed to shave them off. (At 21 years old, you'd think it'd be my choice, but NO...)
3. How will I keep my striped stockings up? That is, can a garter belt be jury rigged since the stockings I found don't have hooks?

If you're feeling dead, I'll be your reanimator. I've got the way to bring you to life. A superior existence with no one to control you, where you can always do what you like. Let me give you some green color and you will ask for more, you will see that you never felt this way before~
Oh, beautiful! I'm the king of affordable quality. :B
1- A book? Well, if you don't plan on learning the songs inside, you can print off a copy of the cover, and glue/tape it to a book/notebook to carry around.
2- An old trick that dates back beyond a lot of things for eyebrows. For instance, a geisha's makeup.
You wet your eyebrows, then slick them down with a bar of soap. Then, when dry, you put makeup on over them, and then draw to your heart's content. heart
If that doesn't work well enough, you can find more detailed instructions on google.
3- You could find sock glue like schoolgirls might use to keep the socks up, or you could tie something around them at the top like a ribbon or shoelace.
Party without limits, have sex and don't be blue, freedom is eternal for you, you, you! Move your dead bones bones bones, move your dead bones bones bones! The secret will keep you alive. Move your dead bones bones bones, move your dead bones bones bones! You'll dance for the rest of your life~.

Wow, that was "quick" and those are some really great suggestions! Do you have a costume in mind for yourself this year? I'd love to hear all about it!

Actually, yes. I dabble a bit in the art of stitch, so I was planning on making myself a second dress.
I made this one- [ x ] [ x ]
I also made the parasol. o 3o You'd be shocked what can happen with an old curtain and an old umbrella. Thrift stores ARE your friends.
But yes-
I plan on making another dress before 'ween, but I have no ideas! gonk Party without limits, have sex and don't be blue, freedom is eternal for you, you, you! Hmm... depending on whether it's off-peak season for formalwear and the stock of your local consignment shop... unless your pre-existing time commitments DON'T preclude creating your own gown, here's an idea that might be fun... or stupid... sweatdrop it's hard for me to tell at 3:00am...
Puntastic Pageant Participant (especially good for a group, your guy friends can be PPP judges)
Basic concept: Wordplay plus formalwear and a sash makes you a winner every time. (Sash should be made to fit the person wearing it, and should read with the name/pageant title of the entrant. See example below.)
-Miss/Ms. Interpreted (Requires at least 1 other person to act as the inept translator, if have familiarity with a second language, it'll help.)
More later... maybe. (yawns)

I was hoping for designs rather than ideas of what I could say I am.
Like this one I designed for a friend.

I was hoping for something more midaeval/fantasy with a touch of old France. Like you might see on a porcelain doll.... I dunno, Maybe something like you'd see in a LOTR movie. gonk
Something a but like this, st least a style like that... but with more to the sleeve... @ 3@

Those are really great designs! A medieval-porcelain doll look? I'm not good with all this stuff, but the idea of taffeta and chenille does come to mind... sweatdrop

I want to be Link from Legend of Zelda for Halloween. I've already got most of the costume down, but I'm not too sure how to get the Hylian Shield and Master Sword. stressed I don't want to make it out of cardboard.... stare

Maybe you could find some plastic sword and shield that you can paint or something. I bet if you go to a Halloween or costume store they can find something. Or the toys section of Target or Wall Mart. Good luck!

New Vogue Child, may I recommend seeking inspiration and/or patterns from the Society for Creative Anachronism? This webpage has a rather detailed explanation/pattern on the construction of a bliaut. This is their main sitepage (I think...) in case you wanted to look at the context, or alternate construction theories. Hopefully, this information will be more useful to you than that of my last post... sweatdrop

I will not be worrying about costumes and whatnot this year (due to my computer's repair costing $245 and the fact that I do not have IRL time to trick-or-treat and the fact that my parents don't like Halloween - "It worships the Devil: twisted ").
I will be, as always, playing with costumes on Gaia, though. XD Yay for online trick-or-treating! ~Margem

Sitting around in my dorm getting items on Gaia. XD I hope the event this year is good.
