This was probably the most challanging student he had come across, not becuase of anything the student had done...but because of what he was. A Nautilus, a water baised creature. And baised on the reports he had looked over as well pictures he knew teaching normal melee methods...wasn't going to work. He would have to...be creative.

He recalled a while back in his training learning Sui-ren. A form of ninjitsu that was involved with water. Using it as a weapon, learning how to move silently. Though of course most of the techniques also involved boats...but he figured he could at least use the first two as basics for the boy.

Today..he..was wearing swimming shorts...of all things. No wrappings on his hands or feet, just simple sandles on the pool deck. He would wait for Laial, having arranged for the child to meet him in the pool area. This was ...going to be an interesting class for sure.

At the pool?

It hadn't sounded like a fighting class to Laial, but really, the nautilus boy was happy enough at the prospect of being in the water that he had worn his own water shorts and the ever-present flipflops that bounced up against his heel with each step he took. Heiko had followed, but the decidedly... pink... dragon was under strict orders to stay out of the way, on threat of a nose-swat. She could be rather playful in the water, and that was the last thing that Laial needed, considering the already-difficult task of learning to fight with a shell heavier than his body on his back.

At the very least, he was punctual, if his approach wasn't a little timid, edging closer with his grey toes wriggling in nervous curiosity. "Um, um," Laial announced, tentacles only half-out in first-meeting nerves, "hi, teacher..." For her part, Heiko announced herself with a flapping of her little fins and a cheerful trumpeting sound that was suspiciously like "hiiii!"

Kuyoja turned as he heard the sound of his student approaching, facing him as he noticed he was a bit on the nervous side. He bowed before the boy's dragon first before paying Laial any real sort of attention.

"I am Mr. Tsuzuki. I will be your instructor for this class." He introduced himself to the young boy, before giving a wave towards the pool.

"Today I will be instructing you on a technique called Sui-ren, its a water baised fighting technique and given your...unique physical attributes thought you could benifit from it." He continued with a nod of his head.

"Now unless you have any questions I suggest we get into the water."

Delighted with the attention shown her, Heiko arched her neck in a surprisingly regal motion, lowering her head and giving a little pleased chirring noise in response to the bow before settling down into a curled-up circular heap to keep an eye on her beloved Laial.

"Sui-ren...?" For his part, Laial repeated the technique's name, trying to embed it in his head with some success. "R-right. I don't have any questions." The teacher wasn't as frightening as he'd thought. After all, he was good to Heiko, who seemed to like him, but then his beloved leviathan could be a bit of an airhead in his estimation. "Should I get in then?" Fastidiously, Laial scooted his feet out of his flip-flops, leaving the small shoes where his feet had been, and then scooting them over toward Heiko in a 'here, watch these' motion.

Kuyoja's only response was to move over to the waters edge and dive in seamlessly. Only a few ripples were left in his wake but he soon surfaced a few feet away. Hair plastered to his head he gestured for the boy to follow.

"Your dragon is welcome to join is he or she wishes." He called out as he tredded on the spot a moment before heading towards the shallower end.

"once we stretch we will start our exercises."

Goggling a little at his teacher, Laial ducked his head a little and then splashed into the water as well, with a lot less grace. He sank for a moment, but propelling himself to the surface via the strange buoyant motion nautili were rather good at. "Okay," he said, a little dubiously, moving to the shallow water with his teacher. "Heiko, do you wanna come too?"

The leviathan was only too glad to join in, unwinding and gleefully splashing into the water, tail splashing down.

Kuyoja watched as the dragon went about joining them. He then watched the child as he floated somewhat and came in his direction. He gave the boy a nod of his head, his hair plasted to his head as he went to stand int he shallows.

"I am assuming you are quite comfortable in the water." The taller man asked as he then went a few steps into the deeper water.

"We will stretch first. Please stretch your..legs and arms by following my lead." He explained as he then went about bending his legs and arms while in the water.

"Yup," said Laial, making a pleased sound at the water, rubbing Heiko's head a little as she slid past, trying to keep focused. He was more comfortable in the water than he was on land, all truth be told. "Yessir," he said, in a little mumble, and then began to stretch, mimicking his teacher's motions with surprising grace. He had seemed awkward on land, but as he stretched in the water, he was smiling, long tentacles curling and flicking at the tips delightedly.

Kuyoja enjoyed water baised tactics every once and a while but not every day. He watched the boy curiously even as his face remain void of any real emotion. The child was graceful in the water, though it made sense. The shell must be awkward on land...

"have you tried fighting in the water before?" He inquired as he turned to the child to indicate stretching was over for now.

"No, sir," said Laial, lowering his head a little bit as he lowered his arms. "I haven't fought much at all." He could remember his one abortive attempt at fighting, and one tentacle curled in a bit, thoughtfully. "I'm not very good at it on land, that's for sure." Irritation set the child's jaw in a slightly mulish sulk.

Kuyoja nodded his head as he listened to the boy, it would be awkward for himself to teach fighting in the water, but he would do it for the child's sake.

"Pherhaps your next class we could focus on defensive techniques on land, that way you won't be as vunerable." He commented before moving to get closer to Laial.

"Since you have your...tentacles you have range to strike at an opponent before they could reach you. We are going to focus on tactics like that. Weapons in water tend to create more drag than is useful, and would take several months to develope the strength to weild a weapon usefully in water. " Hedidn't add that it was also expensive to find under water weapons that wouldn't rust out or get damaged by water.

"Would you rather learn how to weild weapns under water? or just use your own body as a weapon?"

"Really? I can use my own self as a weapon?" Laial's eyes widened a little bit, delight and curiosity making his head tilt a little. Wet red hair brushed his cheeks and he smiled. "That would be so cool," the nautilus boy enthused. "Even cooler than weapons! Do you think I could?" He surveyed his own thin grey arms with slight disbelief.

Kuyoja looked the boy over and nodded his head.
"Yes. Your tentacles as they were would make excellent defense as well offense. Can you control them all individually?" He inquired as he though of a way to help work the lesson and swam over to the ledge and pulled himself out of the water. He then walked over to a bucket and picked up some weights and then dropped them into the water. He would first have Laial practice grabbing them with each tentacle.

Just to see how well he could cordinate them.

"Well, yes sir," Laial said, and the long slender tentacles emerged from the depths of his shell, writhing slightly as they hovered at attention -- and one curled playfully out in a little bit of a wave, even though that was probably not necessarily the best of ideas... His teacher seemed rather serious...

"Did you want me to get those, sir?" Laial asked dubiously as the weights began to sink under the water, watching them -- it wasn't as if he couldn't breathe under there, anyway...

Kuyoja nodded his head at the question.
"Yes, I want you to use one tentacle at a time to try and grab a weight." He instructed as he moved out of the child's line of sight.

"I want to see just how much ...control you have over your tentacles...can you use one at a time? or do they act on their own?" He inquired as he studied the one that waved at him...he was now leaning towards the latter of his statements.
