-About Lab Rats- Quote: The brown rat, common rat, Hanover rat, Norway rat, Norwegian rat, or wharf rat (Rattus norvegicus) is one of the best known and most common rats, and also one of the largest. Thought to have originated in northern China, this rodent has now spread to all continents, except Antarctica, and is the dominant rat in Europe and much of North America. It lives wherever humans live, particularly in urban areas. It is a brown or grey rodent, with a body up to 25 cm (10 in) long, with the tail a similar length; the male weighs on average 350 g (12 oz) and the female 250 g (9 oz).
Selective breeding of Rattus norvegicus has produced the laboratory rat, an important model organism in biological research, as well as pet rats. It is the most successful mammal on the planet, other than humans. Quote: In 1895, Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts (United States) established a population of domestic white brown rats to study the effects of diet and for other physiological studies. Over the years, rats have been used in many experimental studies, which have added to our understanding of genetics, diseases, the effects of drugs, and other topics that have provided a great benefit for the health and wellbeing of humankind. Laboratory rats have also proved valuable in psychological studies of learning and other mental processes (Barnett, 2002). A 2007 study found rats to possess metacognition, a mental ability previously only documented in humans and some primates.
Domestic rats differ from wild rats in many ways. They are calmer and less likely to bite; they can tolerate greater crowding; they breed earlier and produce more offspring; and their brains, livers, kidneys, adrenal glands, and hearts are smaller (Barnett 2002).
Brown rats are often used as model organisms for scientific research. When conducting genetic research rats are much rarer than mice. When it comes to conducting tests related to intelligence, learning, and drug abuse, rats are a popular choice due to their high intelligence, ingenuity, aggressiveness, and adaptability. Their psychology, in many ways, seems to be similar to humans. Entirely new breeds or "lines" of brown rats like the Wistar rat have been bred for use in laboratories. Much of the genome of Rattus norvegicus has been sequenced. Quote: Strains of lab-rats: -Wistar Rat -Sprague Dawley Rat -Lomg-Evans Rat -Zucker Rats -info thanks to Wikipedia-

personality: Shy and rather introverted, he'll never be the life of the party. He's extremely intelligent and loves puzzles and riddles of all kinds with a passion for science. His favorite way to spend time is playing with his chemistry set and making "concoctions" of dubious natures. An extremely sweet and well-meaning boy, he's easy enough to get along with and once you get past his shy exterior he can actually be quite social in his own quiet way. He has an easy sense of humor and takes teasing and jokes at his expense fairly well.
Personality strengths: Highly intelligent, sweet, good sense of humor, energetic.
Personality weaknesses: Introverted and occasionally rather single-minded, it can be hard to tear him away from a project. Shy at first and easily startled by those he doesn't know.
Likes: Mazes and puzzles and various mental challenges. Science (more practicing it than reading about it) especially chemistry. Healthy food.
Dislikes: Loud noises, wide-open spaces with no cover, junk-food (Except for ice-cream)
pose:
extra: Slightly prominent front teeth
