FREEDOM OF SPEECH ONLY EXISTS IF YOU AGREE WITH IT!

This, along with copyright law, paranoid anti-terrorism legislation, hate speech laws, and the ridiculous treatment of protesters is making me doubt there is any protection left for free speech. The government will simply keep limiting it more and more until it is stopped, or there is no freedom of speech left to take away.

i disagree, have you been silenced for saying that? if so then you still have free speech, as do millions of other bush haters.

I didn't say there was no free speech left, I said that currently there is nothing stopping them from passing more and more restrictive laws. Bush hasn't turned the US into the Third Reich, but the stripping away of rights that has gone on during his presidency has been nothing short of horrifying, and neither Obama nor McCain are likely to stop it.

I do believe you have just commited the fallacy of the slippery slope. Simply because Bush passed some legislation that was not too popular which as I see it did NOT restrict free speech in anyway it does not necessarily follow that he will continue to do so nor that others will continue the path.

In any case people have the freedom to pack up and leave if they so choose unlike many totalitarian regimes.

holy mackerel, the writer of that editorial has quite an agenda. Acts of free speech are a public use of political power and I think citizens are within their rights to scrutinize uses of that power to screen out abuse. All the media coverage surrounding Obama's relationship with that terrorist dude has been pushing the line, edging quite close to slander/libel and it is acceptable to make sure any such future speech acts stand up to scrutiny. Second, private citizens threatening lawsuits don't concern me as The Freedom Of Speech is a right that protects us from government interference, not interference from other citizens.

With willpower and blind fanaticism, anything can be done. You have the right to say whatever you want to say against someone right now, but if that person has legion upon legion of worshippers, they can drown your voice in a sea of voices. The voice of many outweighs the voice of one.
