Panting...running...out of breath...
That was exactly how the mostly white male felt as he continued running pushing his body to the limit. His chest hurt terribly but that didn't stop him, it was almost as though he was afraid of stopping. It was as though he was running from something and in a way he was. He was running from himself, or rather the other self that continuously tried to edge him on, to provoke him into starting fights. Things that he enjoyed as a child but now hated because it felt as though it wasn't his choice.
He felt like a puppet being played by someone who wanted to watch him squirm, who wanted him to suffer. Still he tried to push those thoughts from his mind. Right now he just needed to keep running until he found something, someone he knew. Someone who could help him.
Unfortunately for Kabili his body just couldn't take it anymore. He had pushed it to his limit and his legs gave way, resulting him him crashing to the ground rather heavily just a few feet from edge of the ocean.
Why was he here? There was a reason and he knew it he just couldn't fish it out of the depths of his mind. Think...think...why did I come here?" He thought to himself as he inhaled heavily. "There...re...wa..was someone..." He mumbled panting heavily with every word.
Then it hit him.
Kilelo.
His best, and perhaps only friend. He had told her that he would be by the ocean if she ever needed him. A dry laugh escaped his maw, only to get a mouthful of sand that he quickly tried to spit out. To him it was ironic that he was here, searching for her when he had told her to find him.

Where had she gone? How much time had passed? What WAS she looking for? Thin, tired legs dragged along the emaciated body of an adult lioness. Kilelo had grown over the months, but not much, her bony frame not able to support more muscle. She was well old enough to be able to fend for herself now, yet somehow, she still didn't. Kilelo scavanged what she could, which was usually not very much, but she had adapted to this lifestyle. She was still alive, wasn't she? The gray female had left her home at the swamps a while ago; leaving behind all she had left of a family, not that she had ever made an effort to be one with her sisters. To them, she was as good as dead. To everyone, she was as good as dead. Dead as her dead mother.
A few miles ago, the terrain had started to change. Rough savannah grasses softened, as did the dirt beneath her paws. The terrain was smooth, sand shifting under her with every step. Kilelo stopped, her gaze empty as she looked up from the ground to survey her surroundings. A salty breeze hit her, making her oddly colored eyes tear up. The ocean... It seemed... But why she was here, Kilelo couldn't figure. Something was driving her, something deep within her mind. Something she couldn't shake, but something she couldn't bring up. She'd been on the move too long; she was too weak, too tired, too hungry. She couldn't remember. What had happened to her? Kilelo stood there amongst the soft sand grasses, now, without a purpose, looking simply dead on her feet.

Kabili wasn't aware of where he seemed to gather the strength but he managed to push his paws into the sand and pick himself up. After a few failed attempts because of the unstable grains. A groan slipped from his maw as he shook his head before letting his jade colored eyes take in his surroundings. The salty air felt refreshing, almost perfect like it was what he had been searching for but he knew it wasn't.
His heartbeat seemed to quicken as he looked around praying she was nearby. If she wasn't then he wasn't sure if he would have the strength to continue to look for her today and if not then what if he missed her. He couldn't have that. He was willing to spend his life looking for her but he didn't want to. He promised that they'd meet again and it was going to happen.
Slowly he shifted his feet just the tiniest bit afraid that if he took actual steps he would fall again.
That was when he saw her.
His heart raced as his eyes widened wondering if this was just another dream, another dream where he saw her then she vanished. However the Kilelo he saw before him was much thinner than he had ever imagined. ad she not taken care of herself like he had told her to? Shame on her.
"Kilelo?"
He took an uncertain step towards her as he spoke afraid she would disappear. "Is that really you?" He asked his voice a mere whisper as he took another step.
He pushed his fears back and broke into a run towards her praying his body would comply just one more time.
"Kilelo!"
He was sure he hadn't been this happy in a while.

Kilelo stood still for a good amount of time; her skin and bones body swaying as the breeze caught it. She was making an attempt to thinking, to figure out her purpose for coming here. Had she just wanted to get away from her life? To start over in a place where all was foreign? Apparently so. The frail creature sighed with a heavy heart. There was too much commotion going on within her; she didn't have the strength to process it. Kilelo had been much too absorbed in her own thoughts to have noticed a scurry of movement coming from the shore. It wasn't until she heard her name uttered that Kilelo finally snapped out of her trace-like state.
Wide, bi-colored eyes scanned the area frantically, looking for the source of the sound. Had she been hallucinating? Another living being knew her name? Knew she existed? Her head slowly turned to the figure of a white lion running to her. The female's brow furrowed; who was this? Before her, panting and exhausted there stood a male, not yet full grown by the looks of his dark mane. The look on Kilelo's face was lost and confused.
"Who...?"
Kilelo's voice was barely a croak as she spoke, her vocal cords weak from dissuse. She looked this male over, before her gaze finally met his. They stood in silence for a while as Kilelo worked over the situation. Kilelo was starting to feel a little bit quesy; her stomach turning, breath shortening as a tightness too over her chest. It was as if her body was reacting faster than her thoughts. As she held the male's brilliant jade gaze, her own eyes fluttered, a distant memory being jogged.
"The ocean, I'll rembmer".... "Search for me in dreamland...you'll find me"...
Was that the answer? Had the last few months just been a sleepwalk, her subconscious dreams driving her unknowingly to this destination? Kilelo shook her head roughly, almost falling over as she did so. She was awake now, apart of this world, not just the pitiful one in her head. She was here. And so was he. Kilelo caught the male's gaze once again, this time, with confidence,
"Kabili."

A smile spread across his lips when he heard her say his name. He stopped in his run just long enough to stare into her bi-colored eyes again before he started running again surprised that his body was willing to comply with his wishes, he was also thankful that the voice in the back of his mind was silent.
Kabili was so excited to see her again that when he reached her he instantly nuzzled her neck not even stopping to think that it would bother her. Or maybe he had just assumed that she was as happy to see him as he was to see her. After seeing her in his dreams it was so nice to see the real thing, the one that would just disappear as soon as he was close enough to touch her.
"I've missed you so much."
He told her pressing his head lightly into her neck as he spoke. It felt so good to be able to actually touch her after how long it had been since he had told her they were leaving.
"You have no idea how good it is to see you."

Kilelo was initially taken aback as Kabili nuzzled his head into her. The female flinched back momentarily, as she wasn't used to any kind of physical contact with another. However, she quickly relaxed as her mind started to reel with fond memories of the past. Smiling contently, Kilelo brought a thin paw up to Kabili's head, softly patting his scruffy, young mane.
"It's you."
Kilelo still was lacking words to react to this situation, but still, everything felt right. The longer she stood there in their embrace, oddly enough, the fuller she began to feel. A warmth was seeping back into her heart and a strength was building up in her muscles. Suddenly, she wasn't alone any more and with this fact in mind; she knew that she could go on. Closing her eyes to savor the moment, she weakly rested her chin on Kabili's head,
"I didn't think I'd ever see you again. I was starting to forget..."

Kabili was feeling so much more content than he had felt since the day he told her he was leaving. After that he had lost all interest in everything he had once found so mischievous and fun. Now everything felt so right. The voice that had plagued him ever since he had left his family (it started with a fight with one of his sisters) was quiet if not gone. He wasn't sure that anything could really get any better that this moment. Well perhaps if Kilelo wasn't so thin...
"It's me, it's me."
He replied as he inhaled deeply taking in her scent that was so familiar but so strange at the same time. Where had she been since they had parted? Where ever it had been he could smell it upon her now, however faintly it had been.
"Don't be silly." He whispered to her nuzzling her once more, never letting his contact with her fade. "I made a promise to you that I would find you. And that the day I said goodbye wouldn't be the last day I ever saw you."
He felt as though his words were corny but he didn't care, she was by his side again and that was all that mattered to him.
"Let me tell you something Kilelo. You were always in my dreams."
He murmured still not caring how stupid or gay it sounded. It was simply the truth and he just wasn't going to deny it.
"I could never forget you."

For the first time in what seemed like forever, Kilelo finally felt fulfilled. The feeling itself was almost overwhelming, it made her head spin and limbs weak. Keeping contact with Kabili, Kilelo lowered her limbs and sat down, feeling a bit more stable now that she was closer to the ground. She opened her eyes, sighing heavily as she did so. There was so much she wanted to ask him. So many gaps in their time apart that needed to be filled in. But now wasn't a time to pry.
"I'm glad you found me... Glad I found you."
In fact, she was more surprised that she had found him. She hadn't been conciously looking for anything afterall. It seemed fate had brought them together at last. Kilelo's ears perked up slightly as Kabili spoke, a smile spreading across her face. She felt content in knowing the fact that there had always been someone that remembered her existance, even when she had forgotten about it herself. With a low purr, she nudged him,
"I think that's what kept me going. Some how. Even when I couldn't go on. Something called me here, now I see, it was you. Since you left Kabili, I hadn't been fully awake, I hadn't been aware. I feel like I can live again Kabili, thank you. Thank you."

He had so much he wanted to talk to her about. He wanted to know where she had gone, what she had done after he left. He had gone back, just as he said he would, but she was no where to be found. It didn't matter. All that matter was that he was here and so was she.
"You have no idea..."
Maybe she did, maybe she didn't but he knew that she was just as glad as he was that they had found each other once again. Kabili had a feeling that he had continued to push himself so hard, not because he was running from the voice in his head, but to find her. For once it seemed like the Gods had decided to smile upon him.
As she moved to sit so did he still keeping his face pressed into her neck simply because it felt so perfect just to be sitting there with her. When she nudged him he pulled back but moved a paw forward to rest it on top of hers. As he listened to her words his head tilted to the side just a bit as he furrowed his brow just before a smile crossed his maw.
"Y'know I never thought that seeing you again would be like this. I mean I knew that I would be happy to see you but...but I never expected to feel like..like this. To feel so happy that all I want to do is sit here with you and talk when I had been so exhausted only a little while ago."
He admitted to her glancing at the sands that had begun to shift with the breeze that rolled over them. When he lifted his head he sought her gaze, locking eyes with her.
"Things just weren't the same without you Kilelo."

So much time had lapsed since she'd last seen him. The change in the male was rather astounding. She'd left him as a scruffy young cub with whom she had had to wrestle with in order to get a straight answer. A cub with wisdom far beyond his few short months who hid it all behind a jester's mask. And now, there he stood before her; boy had he grown. It was difficult looking at him as an aged being now; he brain still wanting to accept him as the little cub that she had befriended. But there was no denying it; the innocent little cub was sprouting into a powerful beast. She could see the thick muscle starting to cover his frame; that scruffy fuzz on his head was slowly sprouting into a thick mane. He'd be a force to be reckoned with, her Kabili.
As for Kilelo, she had barely changed one iota. The female was still gaunt and skeletal. Her frame had grown, but her adult size hadn't reached anything too much larger than her adolescent build. The female was in essence a canvas of dull, furry skin draped over sharply angeled bones. It was obvious that she still wasn't eating. Her mother had died, never teaching her, and after that, she had never had the will in her to learn. Just wasn't worth it. She relied on the pity of others, the scraps left behind. It was a shameful life, that of a scavenger, but it was hers.
But somehow, somehow it was all ok now, now that she had found Kabili again. With him, she'd found the will to keep going, because without him, she had had nothing but a fleeting memory. Sitting there next to the boy, her uneven colored eyes took in every detail of him, storing the sight in her memory she could never forget. In a perfect world, they could stay here, in this moment forever, forget about everything else, forget about the dragging bits of life and just revel in each other's company. But the world was not a perfect place.
"I feel like I've been filled with life again, seeing you Kabili. There wasn't anything out there for me in the world, nothing but the word you gave me that we'd see each other again."
Kilelo smiled softly, suppressing the thoughts of hunger that she stomach was sending out. Who needed to eat when everything she needed was right here, right now.
"And look at us. Here we are..."

So much time had passed since they first parted and he couldn't exactly say the times had been kind to him. No. In his opinion they had been anything but. He had spent his time wandering around aimlessly, no excitement, no thrills to keep him entertained. Then his sister had pushed all of his wrong buttons and he had snapped. He had lashed out and while had done minimal damage he had been horrified. Sure he enjoyed playing harmless pranks on them but to actually lash out. It had been a rather rude awakening for him.
It was shortly after that he had experienced vicious mood swings and voices. The very thought of the voices sent shivers spiraling down his spine. The voices that had been silent since he reached the ocean. Since he saw her once more.
Of course for his physical appearance time had been all too kind. He inherited his larger build from his mother side and had filled it nicely. Being crazy helped. Sometimes.
"I'll always keep my promise to you Kilelo."
The adolescent whispered completely confident in his words. Nothing, and he meant nothing, could keep him from doing so. Nothing short of death at least. He let an honest smile spread across his lips as he leaned in giving her one more nuzzle.
"I've missed you...I've missed you so much. I feel like a fool with how long it took me to realize just how damn important you are to me."

If only she'd known about Kabili's inner turmoil, maybe she could've helped. If only she'd be intune to the demons in his head. But to her, he'd always seemed alright; she'd had no reason to worry. It wasn't like they'd ever talked about any hardships in their lives. Kabili was an enigma to her. Perhaps it was that mystery that drove her to want to be closer so she could get to know him better. Perhaps she just craved his company. Perhaps both.
It was funny how fate had drawn them together. Kilelo had almost given up the thought that she'd ever see her companion again. However, every time she started to forget about him, she found herself weak, unmotivated to live on. There was a void in Kilelo's heart that had long been empty. One that longed for the family that had so deserted her. Somehow, Kabili, even though she'd known him for a short time, somehow he'd filled that niche. Some higher power up there knew they needed each other.
"I'm glad, Kabili. It's strange, but ever since you left, it found it hard to... to just be..."
The lithe female sighed heavily, not exactly sure how to form a cohesive sentence. She couldn't even understand how her lonliness had affected her, how was she supposed to explain it? As she felt Kabili's head brush against her, she placed a paw behind his neck, bringing him into a tight embrace. She closed her eyes, shaking her head gently. It was even harder to explain, but every thing just felt right again.
"You're everything."

At her statement he laughed lightly knowing exactly how she felt. He had felt the same way. Empty, without much to do...almost barely hanging on by a very thin thread. "I know, I know." He whispered into her ear inhaling deeply to take in that rich, sweet scent of hers. He didn't care that she wasn't the cleanest of healthiest, she was his and he knew it. He would never let her go, not again.
"You're my everything Kilelo."
He mumbled after she had spoken almost echoing her words. He couldn't help it. Everything she had said he felt and wanted to repeat. Things would be better for both of them. She quelled the demons in his mind and he would care for her. He could hunt, barely but he still could, and he would hunt for her. She was everything to him and without her...he would be nothing.
"I'm going to take care of you. There won't be a day where you're hungry after this okay?"
The rather large male told her determination in his tone. He would do it, no matter what. He'd take care of her. Yes he would.

Kilelo manage to display a crooked, light smile; her eyes brightening up with the expression. It felt good to just be here with Kabili. He was young, but his presence was so comforting, an aura of familiarity and safety just floated about him. It was something she'd been searching for her whole life. Something she'd always assumed would evade her. Something that had evaded her up until now. How is it that she had gotten so lucky? To find what she needed?
The female shook her head in disbelief. She'd found someone to be the family she'd been pining for. He'd be there for her no matter what; she was sure of that. Kilelo felt helpless there in his embrace. Maybe with his help she'd learn to not be so useless. Learn to hunt, learn to live.
"What would I do without you? How did I ever manage?"
Ki's words came softly and with a chuckle. That's right, she never really did manage. She was a sad excuse for a lion. She knew that. She didn't deny it. The acceptance she was experiencing right now was uplifting though.
"We'll take care of each other."

When she questioned him, he laughed lightly and nuzzled her neck. "The same thing I would do without you." He replied before pausing and pulling away from her to look into her dual colored eyes. "You would stumble along lost, confused and still searching."
At least that would be how he was, still stumbling along fighting with himself just trying to figure out who he was supposed to be. Where he was supposed to go. Who he needed to find.
With Kilelo, well he felt as though he had discovered his other half. The person that completed him. The one he had spent his whole life searching for only to find she had been waiting the entire time. That she had been searching for him too. He felt silly feeling the way he did but there wasn't anything that was going to change it. No.
"We will."
He agreed with a smile as he continued to take in her rather frail form. "We'll make it through together."
