User Image Lazarus was laying on his back atop a large, flat rock. It wasn't a very inconspicuous spot, right in the middle of an open, yellow Savannah, but he never was one to give himself to cautionary tactics. More of a hazard engineer, he enjoyed going out and looking for trouble. If he couldn't find any, he simply made some for himself.

In that moment, however, he was reclining in thought. He had been wandering on his own for a while now, and was beginning to yearn for a companion of some sort. He was not the kind to be without company, particularly of the opposite gender, for too long. Sighing, he lulled himself back and forth for a few minutes, not finding any comfort in the action beyond giving himself something to do.

Heaving a sigh, the green jackal rolled and stood up, gazing around the grasses beneath him. He felt far larger than his small frame should have allowed, his chest held proudly as he surveyed what he imagined was his territory. From this vantage point he could see any thing, in any direction.

Except, of course, the direction he wasn't looking in.

As Kianga was getting to be an adult, her mother and Utundu had been giving her more slack to wander about. She was in a pack and needed to stay semi-near the territory, but this didn't mean she couldn't travel a little ways out of it.

Today was a nice day and she figured it was time to get out and find something fun to do and discover some new things. She had been walking for a while now, getting tired from such exercise she wasn't used to. Deciding to take a rest, she found a large rock that looked like it had a nice amount of shade behind it. Perfect for resting. Kianga made her way over to it, flopping onto the ground with a sigh. As she noticed dust make a cloud from this action, she giggled to herself. She patted the earth with her tail a few times in attempt to make a few more. It worked, but they weren't as big. Coughing a few times from inhaling dirt particles, she figured it was time to call that form of entertainment quits.

What else around here could she watch to keep her amused?

Lazarus sniffed at the air and looked around. He thought he smelled another Jackal in the area. It seemed fortuitous, considering how he had just been yearning for company, and he felt as though his mind were playing a rather cruel joke on him. Yet his trained nose was rarely wrong, and he drew a deep breath in through it, just to be sure. There was definitely a jackal scent nearby.

He blinked as the smell got closer, unable to spy anything in the yellow grasses. Sitting down on the tall rock, he wagged his tail in irritation. A cloud of dust rose from beneath him, and he peered down from his perch at the top of the rock and spotted a yellow jackal sitting beneath him. That explained why he hadn't been able to see it approach.

Grinning, he reached his paws down, just barely able to play with the fluff oon the top of her head.

"Hello, down there."

Rather focused on her surroundings, she didn't expect something to come reaching for her fur on her head. "Ah!" she yelped. Looking up to see what the source of this touching was, she realized it was another jackal on top of the rock she was beside. His blue eyes shimmered in the sunlight, which hypnotized her in ways.

"Sorry to be startled like that." She had blushed. "I didn't expect to see anybody around these areas." With that, she gave the male a smile. As she looked him over, she noticed his unusual markings... many swirls of browns and greens. Just like the area around them.

She shook her head to snap herself out of this daze. It was rude to stare. "Sorry, but I forgot to tell you my name. It's Kianga." she told him, giggling again.

Grinning, he watched as she reacted to his playful swatting of her fur, laughing and shaking his head as she looked up at him. He very much liked the way she had yelped, glad that she hadn't run off or tried to attack him for surprising her. He was also pleased to see it was a female, though he would have been content with any company at that point.

"Don't apologize for instinct," he said, still hanging languidly from the rock. He kept his head low, his neck stretched in an effort to close the distance between them without climbing from his perch. He noted that she seemed younger than he was, but the sharp yellow of her fur, and the green of her eyes, distracted him from taking too many notes on her just yet.

Offering a suave half smile, one eyebrow held higher than the other, he nodded when she introduced herself.

"I'm Lazarus. Or Laz, if you like. Kianga. That's very pretty. Fitting, then, for you. I've never seen fur like yours before. Stunning."

She laughed at his expressions and couldn't help but continue to smile. Kianga found herself thinking that she had definately found something to keep her interest for a while. Afterall, she hadn't met anyone outside her family yet, but she was quite trusting. Whether that be a bad thing, she figured she'd find out in the future, but in this case, it might have been good. She had met this handsome male out of it.

"I think I'll call you Lazarus." She had told him. With his polite and almost flirtacious comment after his name, her eyes lit up. Nobody had ever told her such things that made her stomach tingly in this way. She thought she'd give him one in return. "It sounds like a prince's name, or something great and wonderful." Kianga beamed.

"Thank you, though, for that compliment. I'm the only golden colored jackal in my family." Noting this, she decided to be a little bit more friendly and leaped up onto the rock with him. He shouldn't have to stretch his neck out like that for her.

"So where do you find yourself going to on this lovely day, Lazarus?"

Lazarus laughed, getting to his feet and, after a proud moment atop the rock, looking down at her with his chest so far forward his chin was brushing the fluff on it, he moved to leap down to meet her on the ground. He was stopped, however, when she bounded up to greet him instead.

Grinning, impressed that she would make the first move, he shrugged his thin shoulders. "I don't think my name means anything particularly wonderful, but the jackal attached sure is entertaining," he beamed, shamelessly, "though, green and brown all over. Not as brilliant as gold."

Smiling still, his eyes bright and blazing with intelligence and interest, he nodded another hello at her. Sitting down, tail flipping against the rock lazily, like a dying fish out of water, he looked thoughtfully at her for a short moment.

"Now that you're here, I don't think I need to go anywhere at all," he decided, as if this were a profound idea, "how about you? Where were you heading, you know, before you made my day worth being awake for?"

He thought she was brilliant? That was certainly something she hadn't heard before. Usually her pack called her overly-happy and often asked what there was to always be so happy about. To her, she didn't let anything in life bring her down, so everyone always found her in a wonderful mood. Smiling and laughing were her favorite things to do in life, along with having fun. This male seemed to provide all of these things to her right now. It was pretty impressive and she knew she was loving all of Lazarus's sweet comments and kind, playful nature.

"Well your name might not mean anything wonderful, but you definately seem wonderful to me." she told him, a little sheepishly. With that comment, there seemed to be a few seconds of silence and Kianga seemed to be entranced into his eyes again. Blinking, she blushed as she caught herself staring again. She really needed to stop this. She probably looked like she was not all there in these episodes of being hypnotized.

"Oh. Umm... I was actually just looking for something interesting to catch my eye away from my pack." she told him with a nod. Sometimes it got boring being around the same scenery all of the time and you just needed to get out and explore. "Well, I found it." She gave him a grin once more.

Lazarus, despite himself. blushed. He didn't have much experience being on the receiving end of compliments. At least, not ones that came so early in a meeting. He was glad for his thick fur, no doubt red down to his skin, the tips of his ears burning as a testament to this idea. He stared back at her as she watched him intently, letting her look.

"You certainly did," he agreed. If she hadn't had said it herself, he would have supplied that very sentiment. He found himself to be very interesting, and prided himself on involving others in his quest to maintain that status. He liked the way she was willing to play with him, nodding approvingly.

"I can probably find us something even more interesting to do. I mean, besides staring at me. Though, whenever I catch my own reflection I'm pretty much enthralled for hours, so I can't really blame you." Laughing, clearly teasing himself, he looked around them. There was still nothing going on in the plains, but he now had a mission in his head that he could not fail.

He had said he would find them something to do, and he intended to follow through with that.

"Are you hungry at all? Or need a drink?" he asked offhandedly, not intending a meal or a trip to a watering hole to be their adventure.

"That would be umm... fun." she laughed. Kianga tried figuring out if he was implying that as a joke, or if he was truly concieted. She didn't want it to be the later because others who were full of themselves confused her. It seemed like they spent too much time admiring themselves rather than admiring the world around them. She tried to never let anyone else bother her though, so she didn't think too much of it.

"I am kind of thirsty from my long walk, though." she mentioned, smacking her tongue in her mouth a couple times. "Maybe we could go get a drink quick and then find something else to do?" Kianga was anxious to see what Lazarus could come up with for something fun to do. She was definately ready for some, since the long walk here was pretty dull. She did get to see new surroundings, however. So that was pretty intriging.

Without Lazarus even starting off, Kianga pounced off of the rock and landed onto the savannah dirt again, stirring up another cloud. She looked back to make sure he was coming.

Lazarus nodded. He watched as she jumped off the rock. Nodding to himself, he imagined this was going to be an interesting day, after all. Stretching his muscles, he leapt down after her, hitting the dirt and rolling dramatically in order to get to his feet jut past where she had started walking. Looking back at her, he inclined his head toward the watering hole in the distance.

"This way, my pretty yellow friend," he grinning, trotting off. His tail high, he hummed a tune as he cantered, his baritone rather soothing and, ultimately, displaced against his rough appearance. He often spent his lonely days singing, which had smoothed out most of the kinks in his tone.

"After we get a drink," he said, his voice sing-songy, "we can go check out this den I was looking at earlier. I'm pretty sure something lives in it, but don't worry. If it's capable of hurting us, I'll make sure to make myself an excellent target."

Chuckling to herself, she continued with following him to the watering hole. Thinking, Kianga came to notice that she had never even been to a watering hole before. She usually just drank water from nearby streams by the pack territory. Today would be her first day then and she imagined what it would be like.

"Sounds fun." she had told him. If there was something living in the den that they were about to explore, wouldn't they be perfect candidates for being lunch? They would be trespassing afterall, so they would likely deserve it. Especially since it would be on purpose.

"What if whatever lives there gets ahold of you though? I wouldn't be able to do much if that happened. I'm tiny compared to most animals around these areas and it would probably take no effort to bring me down." With expressing this worry by wearing a frown, she swatted at Lazarus with her tail playfully. Kianga didn't want to see anyone get hurt today or even someone sacrificing themselves for her. He had just met her.

Lazarus led the way to a small watering hole, its edges thick with green grass that only managed to spread a foot or two from the edge. He laughed as she voiced her concern. It wasn't a teasing laugh, or in any way derisive. He was simply a confident creature, and knew how to keep himself out of danger. Or rather, he knew how to get into it, and how to effectively get out of it without getting hurt.

"Don't worry about me, or you. I was poking around there, and I don't think that place could house anything too dangerous," he wagged his tail as she swatted him with hers, watching her with his intense, piercing blue eyes, "besides, danger makes things a little more fun. Would you really want to go explore that place if you knew it was home to rabbits? Where would the fun in that be?"

Shaking his head, he moved to the water and took a small drink, peering back as he bowed his head and indicating with a slight nod that she should follow his example.

"I guess that's true." she admitted with a sigh. She wondered what her family would think though if they never saw her again. The first time they let her venture out on her own within a decent distance... and she gets killed, never to be seen again. She figured she'd make the best of this adventure though. Besides, Kianga was sure she'd have fun with Lazarus. He wouldn't just say he's good with getting out of trouble if he really wasn't, would he?

As they reached the water, she eyed Lazarus drinking first, but stopped a moment to admire the small pond. It was different from everything else she had drank out of, but it was a little more open and spacious and she thought she liked that. Leaning over the water, Kianga put her chin to the surface of the water and lapped up some swallows. It made her dry throat feel so much better with the cool, moist liquid. She drank until she felt like she drained half of the pond and lifted her head back up.

"So, ready to go?" she asked, shooting a grin.

The green jackal watched as she drank, wondering if she had not had water for some months to justify such a long time at the water's edge. He shook his head, then realized he had wanted to nod and switched the direction of his movement.

"Yeah, I'm ready," he clarified, just in case she was having as difficult a time figuring out his motions as he was, "it's not too far from here, but it's good to get a drink before we go. You, I think, should be set for the next three weeks. If there's a drought in the future, I'll know who to blame."

Huffing a laugh, he bounded off a bit, not too fast but allowing himself to develop a bit of a lead. He didn't want anything surprising them, so he kept a good eye out. Walking casually, tail swishing behind him, he led the way without a worry on his shoulder. It didn't take them too long to reach the cave, the dwelling dark and ominous despite his promises that it was safe.

"Well," he whispered back to her, "here we are."
